Germany won't arm Taiwan as situation differs from Ukraine: official (TVP World)

Most countries refrain from selling arms to Taiwan lest they anger China provoking it to strike trade in retaliation.

Taiwan’s arsenal mostly comprises weapons either made domestically or by the United States, though France has previously sold fighter jets and warships to Taiwan, while the Netherlands sold Taiwan two submarines in the 1980s. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, the head of Germany's parliamentary defence committee and a member of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's junior coalition partner Free Democrats (FDP), told a news conference in Taipei that Germany had been generous in sending weapons to Ukraine. Germany will not provide Taiwan with weapons and has not been asked to do so, as the situation is different from Ukraine's, a senior German lawmaker said on Wednesday while on a trip to Taipei.

Don't Expect A Lot Of Aerial Dogfights If And When China Attacks ... (Forbes)

A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would be the “ultra-mega” war, to borrow a phrase from Ian Easton, an analyst with the Virginia-based Project 2049 Institute.

And the PLAN’s transport fleet was scattered along the bottom of the Taiwan Strait, depriving Chinese troops on Taiwan of reliable resupply. After a few days of relentless bombardment in the war games, the PLARF began to run out of missiles. The U.S. “Japanese air losses were also high in two out of three iterations, averaging 122 aircraft, and were also largely incurred on the ground.” forces had expended all of the roughly 4,000 cruise missiles in their inventory. The bomber campaign, working in concert with Navy was unable to take up the air-power slack resulting from the suppression of USAF squadrons in the CSIS simulations. “In all base-scenario iterations, the [U.S.] Air Force suffered losses between 70 and 274 aircraft, mostly on the ground,” the analysts explained. But “the relative strength of U.S. and Japanese aircraft losses occurred on the ground” in CSIS’s war games, Geography explains the extreme vulnerability of Taiwanese, U.S. While many hundreds of fighter jets would participate in the war, very few of them would shoot at each other.

While the Taiwanese military is able to prevent initial invaders moving beyond beachheads, US Naval forces and aerial bombardments quickly cripple the Chinese ...

As to whether the US should defend Taiwan in the first place, the CSIS stated that it's not taking a position. To be deterred, China must doubt their ability to prevail through force of arms," the report concludes – "but it will require planning, some resources, and political will." [argued](https://www.theregister.com/2022/06/07/china_must_seize_tsmc/) that China should invade Taiwan and seize control of TSMC if the US imposed sanctions on it akin to those placed on Russia in the wake of the invasion of Ukraine. "If China believes that the United States would be unwilling to bear the high costs of defending Taiwan, then China might risk an invasion … The best goal, therefore, is deterrence – but the US needs to step up its efforts in that department, CSIS said. Meanwhile, US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo warned the loss of access to Taiwanese chips could [devastate](https://www.theregister.com/2022/07/21/us_taiwan_chips_china/) the US economy. That would give the US permission to enter into stronger military agreements and sell the country arms, though it's unclear if President Biden would support the measure. "The United States would sustain as many personnel casualties in a month of such conflict as in 20 years of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan," the researchers argued. Nor did China's violation of Taiwan's airspace in [late December 2022](https://www.reuters.com/world/china/taiwan-says-43-chinese-air-force-planes-crossed-taiwan-strait-median-line-2022-12-26/). "Although this project focused on conventional conflict, many analyses of an invasion have nuclear play," the report said. That's how a US-China war over Taiwan would play out, according to researchers at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Fourth, the US needs to be able to strike China's fleet quickly, en masse, from outside China's defensive zone.

Only Pyrrhic victories in a Taiwan war (Asia Times)

The US and its allies may still be able to repel a Chinese invasion of Taiwan but any such clash would come at a massive cost, a recent simulation report shows.

[Asia Times has also reported](https://asiatimes.com/2022/12/us-mulls-scorched-earth-strategy-for-taiwan/) on a possible US “scorched earth” strategy for Taiwan, wherein the US aims to blow up Taiwan’s prized semiconductor fabs in the event of an invasion to prevent their capture by China. He also notes the reputational, economic and political costs of an invasion of Taiwan, which would result in heavy sanctions imposed on Chinese entities that curtail China’s access to key Western markets. [Asia Times has reported](https://asiatimes.com/2022/12/taiwans-hidden-missiles-can-hit-beijing-shanghai/) on Taiwan’s secret missile arsenal that can hit China’s major population centers, including Beijing and Shanghai, which could stoke a widespread backlash against any war on the island. The destruction of these facilities will cripple China’s war effort, as China heavily depends on Taiwan’s semiconductor industry for critical civilian and military applications. It also mentions that China may risk an invasion of Taiwan should it sense the US is unwilling to sustain such heavy losses. Blanchette says that even without US intervention, an invasion of Taiwan would dramatically and negatively affect China’s exports, financial markets, business sentiment and currency exchange rate. CSIS experts noted that China is still deficient logistically in transporting an invasion force across the Taiwan Strait and has tried to supplement its military logistics using civilian shipping companies. The report states that Taiwan lost half its air force, 22 ships and 3,500 ground troops, with a third of that number killed in action. He writes that while China may have invested heavily in its military, it has had not an opportunity to test its capabilities, doctrines or technologies in a conflict situation. The simulation ended with a sobering conclusion that defending the self-governing island would come with staggering losses for the US, Japan, Taiwan and China. Fourth, the US must be able to strike China’s warships from outside the latter’s anti-access/area-denial (A2/AD) bubble. First, as China’s logistics weaken, Taiwan must hold the line to contain China’s beachhead and counterattack in force.

Xi Jinping has read Thucydides. Have the China hawks? Taiwan Holds Defence Drills. Taiwan's armed forces hold two days of routine drills to show combat ...

Would those agitating for direct American military involvement to prevent such a war have argued for American military involvement in the Afghan-Soviet wars? The deterioration of the Peace of Nicias invited direct interference from Sparta in a way that is not reflected in current U.S.–China relations. It is simply difficult to project force onto a rugged island inhabited by the rich, the well-armed, and the hostile. Maybe, but a war game assumes the premise that war will break out. An obvious truth bears repeating: For historical and geographic reasons, China has a much greater interest in the resolution of the Taiwan question than the U.S. Do we think he failed to notice in his reading the campaign that dominates Thucydides’ history for two full books? as described by Thucydides in The Peloponnesian War. The island, which is resource-rich and agriculturally self-sufficient, is mountainous and largely forested in its interior. Despite initial success for the mainland forces, a three-year campaign ensues. One is based on a continental mainland; it enjoys a relative preeminence in wealth and manpower and has historically appeared successful in its efforts to project force on nearby neighbors and even overseas. The mainland power’s deliberative body decides to commit an exceptionally large force to subduing the island. The unsuccessful campaign is expensive, wastes an enormous amount of manpower, and leaves the mainland power prone to attack from its other enemies.

[ttm cash flow statements](https://seekingalpha.com/symbol/TSM/cash-flow-statement), we see that free cash flow is way, way behind operating cash flow for Taiwan Semiconductor. Its revenue is still rising, unlike that of most semiconductor companies, and even its 2023 guidance isn't all that bad. It is known that Xi wants to achieve unification with Taiwan, and considers force to be the last resort if peaceful means can't achieve his ends. So Samsung will need to invest heavily in property plant and equipment ("PPE") if it wants to catch up with TSM, while Intel's revenue indicates that it is in the same boat. Now of course, a company that's already in the foundry space like Samsung is part of the way there, but with roughly one third of TSM's Capex spend, it doesn't appear on track to close the gap. As mentioned previously, TSM has much more market share than Samsung or Intel, and it is the only supplier to Apple. The fact that it's both profitable and growing in this environment is what you'd expect of a company that's better than most of its peers. The trader could end up long 200 shares with a net basis of $78.18. The trader ends up long 100 shares at a net basis of $86.35. I just need to see the shares pass that test. If my math and conversions are correct (using their 30.7 times assumption), I show Q4 operating cash flow of $15.86B resulting in free cash flow of $4.95B. For the current quarter, Taiwan Semi expects to drive revenue of $16.7B to $17.5B. IoT (Internet of Things) is a distant third at 8%. This number fell short of both guidance and expectations despite being good for year over year growth of 26.6%.
