The Best Cameos in <i>Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery</i> (TownandCountrymag.com)

From Stephen Sondheim to Serena Williams, here is a definitive guide to all the cameos in the second Knives Out film.

He’s a voice in the beginning. Though he does not physically appear in Glass Onion, Gordon-Levitt makes a cameo in the film. "There's nobody in the world I can imagine in bringing me more joy for Benoit Blanc to be with," Johnson said. He greets the group of friends on the dock in Greece before they travel to Miles Bron's (Edward Norton) private island, and squirts a mysterious substance in their mouths. Williams is in a Mirror-like fitness device, and asks them if they want to work out. Cellist Yo-Yo Ma appears as himself near the start of the film, as a guest at a party thrown by Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson). The tennis superstar appears virtually in a scene midway through the movie, when Blanc and Helen (Janelle Monae) are in Miles's gym to confer on a plan. And a lot of people don't know [it's] the only straight play he ever wrote that wasn't a musical was a whodunit." Abdul-Jabbar joins Sondheim and Lansbury in the Among Us scene. Johnson continued, "I feel so thankful that I got a chance to tell him what his work meant to me in my life. It felt like a very special privilege to get to do that," Johnson shared. Glass Onion, the second Knives out film, is a twisty whodunnit.

The Real Meaning Of Glass Onion Perfectly Updates Knives Out's ... (Screen Rant)

Glass Onion is a spiritual successor to Knives Out, with Daniel Craig's Benoit Blanc returning for yet another case, this time centered around a murder mystery ...

Ultimately, the reason why both of the films tackle these themes is down to their genre and the conventions within it. Both Knives Out and Glass Onion center around money in some capacity. [Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery](https://screenrant.com/tag/knives-out-2/) continues its predecessor's story in one perfect way, encapsulating the real meaning behind both films and their respective mysteries.

The Hidden Meaning in the Glass Onion Cameos (Den of Geek)

Rian Johnson's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is filled with cameos, but they represent more than just the filmmaker's acquaintances.

And yep, it’s pretty funny to see American cellist and the National Medal of Arts recipient Yo-Yo Ma throwing down at a party hosted by Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) at the beginning of Glass Onion. However, we suspect his cameo really is just because he’s a friend of Johnson’s and loved turning up in Greece to shoot this bit. Best remembered for his astonishing 20 seasons in the NBA, during which time he helped win six NBA championships and obtained the title of NBA Most Valuable Player for a record six times, Jabbar is also a distinguished author and activist. The still dashing Grant is best known for a string of romantic comedy classics (and a few also-rans) during the 1990s and 2000s, including Sense and Sensibility (1995), Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Notting Hill (1999), and Love Actually (2003). [We already unpacked here](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/glass-onion-knives-out-2-looks-stealth-remake-70s-murder-mystery/) how the setup of Glass Onion is inspired directly by Sondheim’s deeply cynical satire. However, Sondheim’s appearance in Glass Onion is more than a winking cameo; it is also a humble acknowledgment to Johnson’s forebears. In a bit of a curious coincidence, Johnson has been the director of four legends’ final big screen performances to date: Lansbury, Sondheim, Christopher Plummer in Knives Out, and Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. During Craig’s first scene in Glass Onion, which is set back in the hellacious early days of the pandemic, we learn Blanc has spent weeks in the bathtub, wallowing in an existential funk and desperate for a new case to engage his mind. Among the first and most fan-pleasing cameos is the collection of friends Benoit is revealed to keep over Zoom. Lansbury of course also has a larger, storied career on stage and screen, appearing in other famous tales of murder where she did the killing, such as The Manchurian Candidate (1962) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber the Fleet Street, the latter of which was a sinister Stephen Sondheim musical where she originated the role of a woman who ground victims up into meat pies. [Rian Johnson](https://www.denofgeek.com/rian-johnson/)’s latest whodunit, [Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery](https://www.denofgeek.com/knives-out/), the filmmaker has littered the screen with pals. If Benoit Blanc—who is winsomely as ever played by [Daniel Craig](https://www.denofgeek.com/daniel-craig/)—is a pursuer of the truth, and the vigilant hound dog chasing hidden murderers wherever they may dwell, surely he is then conscious of the company he keeps?

Glass Onion's Success Shows We Need More Funny Genre Movies (The Escapist)

Rian Johnson movie Glass Onion shows how cinema could really use more comedy mystery movies and other funny genre hybrid movies.

Glass Onion works because Johnson didn’t sacrifice the mystery at any point for a joke or hold back the absurdity of the characters and story for the sake of his twists either. This film was at its best with its funny slapstick action moments and impressive capers that Fletch pulled off, and it would have benefitted from a tighter list of suspects in the cast and a more focused mystery to tie together the shenanigans going on. That’s not to say there weren’t parts of Glass Onion that felt convoluted too, but the balance was played a lot more effectively there. However, the tone suffered because not enough attention was paid to making the mystery part of this mystery comedy as strong. As much as I miss the days of huge ensemble comedies, I can also admit that it wasn’t a perfect system, either. It’s pretty strange that it seems harder than ever to bank on comedy as a solo selling point, and it’s uncertain that a comedic film will ever fill theater seats in the same way that a franchise like The Hangover trilogy did years ago.

Glass Onion: Knives Out 2's Cameos And Name-Drops, Explained (Cinema Blend)

When we first meet back up with Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, he's chatting with Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and ...

Per the deal Rian Johnson and producer Ram Bergman agreed to with [Netflix](https://www.anrdoezrs.net/links/100412901/type/dlg/sid/cinemablend-us-1158904957174555100/https://www.netflix.com) (opens in new tab), Knives Out 3 is also on its way to Netflix, and once concrete details about the threequel come in, we’ll pass them along. Then we have Hawkeye and Mayor of Kingstown’s Jeremy Renner, who has his own brand of hot sauce in the Knives Out universe. First up is Requiem for a Dream and Morbius actor Jared Leto, who in the Knives Out universe has his own brand of alcoholic kombucha. There’s a moment in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery when Benoit Blanc and Janelle Monáe's Helen Brand meet up in Miles Bron’s gym to discuss the case, and on the wall is what looks like a prerecorded home workout video on a fitness mirror featuring tennis superstar Serena Williams. The two characters decline, and Williams simply comments that it’s their money and hangs out silently for the rest of the scene. In the aforementioned EW interview, Rian Johnson shared that Hawke wasn’t originally supposed to appear in Glass Onion, but because he was in Budapest doing Moon Knight when the movie was shooting in Greece, he was able to visit for a day to shoot his cameo. When we first meet back up with Benoit Blanc in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, he’s chatting with Stephen Sondheim, Angela Lansbury, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Natasha Lyonne over Zoom from his bathtub, playing the deduction game Among Us, with this movie marking Sondheim and Lansbury’s final film appearances. As it turned out, Hawke didn’t have a ton to do in the movie. In Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, CNN’s Jake Tapper briefly appears early on interviewing Kathryn Hahn’s Claire Debella, the governor of Connecticut who’s running for the Senate. Claire chats with Tapper from her home in the midst of lockdown, quickly letting audiences know that Glass Onion takes place during the height of the COVID pandemic. While the first Knives Out movie was unquestionably a star-studded affair, with Daniel Craig being joined by folks like Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Toni Collete, Chris Evans and Christopher Plummer, it didn’t have much in the way of major cameos. [this crtically-acclaimed standalone sequel](https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/glass-onion-reviews-are-in-see-what-critics-are-saying-about-daniel-crags-knives-out-sequel) sees some of these individuals, as well as Blanc himself, interacting with various celebrities, and there are even a few Hollywood heavyweights who stops by as fictional characters rather than themselves.

Movie Review: Glass Onion: A Knives Out (Where is the) Mystery? (NewsroomPost)

After its critically acclaimed predecessor Knives Out, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery was released on Netflix on 23rd December 2022.

Catch Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix to find out yourself! The story takes a turn when a murder takes place. Like in the last film of a similar fashion, Death of the Nile, Glass Onion does have a similar manner of theatrics. Unlike the typical manner of revealing a mystery, the film starts narrating and revealing in the middle itself. The film in our opinion does manage to engage but at the same time differs in its manner of storytelling compared to Knives out. With mixed reviews coming in from everywhere, the question was whether the film lives up to its hit predecessor.

More Great Whodunit Movies to Watch After Glass Onion: A Knives ... (Den of Geek)

Before there was Benoit Blanc and the Knives Out movies, this brand of murder mystery has long been popular on the big screen.

(DK) [Scream](https://www.denofgeek.com/scream/), the original, is a pretty nifty little murder mystery (a trick then attempted by [all the sequels](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/scream-ranking-the-movies-in-order-of-quality/)). [Michael Caine](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/james-bond-actors-who-almost-played-007/)) to his home. [Without The Last of Sheila](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/glass-onion-knives-out-2-looks-stealth-remake-70s-murder-mystery/), there would be no Glass Onion. But the unraveling of the mystery does provide a genuine surprise or two and a satisfying payoff, setting the standard for the modern franchise that followed. [Edgar Allan Poe](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/netflix-fall-of-the-house-of-usher-edgar-allan-poe-stories/). by Parker Brothers), Clue replicates the classic murder mystery formula that the game itself was structured around: Six strangers are invited to a remote mansion by a man who claims to be blackmailing all of them—a man who ends up dead shortly after his visitors/victims arrive. There’s quite a bit of Clue in the DNA of Knives Out and Glass Onion, right down to the starry cast, which in this case included Starting out as a formal whodunit, complete with roster of shady suspects, potential femme fatale (Alida Valli), and startling twists that upend the whole picture, The Third Man is also one of the finest film noirs of all time. and that’s before someone winds up dead and it’s up to these little monsters to figure out who’s responsible before the police steps foot on the boat. As with The Last of Sheila and Glass Onion, Joseph Mankiewicz’s underrated Sleuth appears baked into the DNA of Knives Out. Struggling pulp western writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) comes to a still war-ravaged Vienna to take a job offer from his old friend Harry, only to find out when he gets there that the man is dead, allegedly in an accident but it soon becomes apparent that there is much more going on.

Did 'Glass Onion' leave a clue about 'Knives Out 3'? (Mashable)

With Knives Out, Rian Johnson introduced a gentleman detective who cracked cases with wild charisma — and food metaphors — that left us yearning for more.

Or is Johnson using both these lines to set up a prequel that will be the crazy case that puts Benoit on the map (and out of his father's shadow)? She mentions a "tennis champ" but also notes she didn't actually read the article. "Did you solve the murder of — oh — " But perhaps her fumbling of the details is a sign that this ballerina news is actually pretty old. But among the many glass baubles that adorn Miles' den is a statue of three ballerinas. Investigating Claire's comment, we might assume that a ballerina was murdered mysteriously, and none other than Benoit Blanc cracked the case. So perhaps this fractured thought is tumbling together the victim and the killer. Gender norms might urge us to assume the ballet dancer is the whatshername. But before Blanc was fully in the whirlwind of the family's drama and a complicated frame job, his reputation was hinted at by a pair of comments from the interviewed next-of-kin. So, Benoit is a famous Gentleman Detective because of this New Yorker profile. In response, she exclaims, "Wait a minute — I read a tweet about a New Yorker article about you. So what could Knives Out 3 be about — and did Johnson drop a clue in his now-on-Netflix sequel?

Glass Onion Is the Rare, Better-Than-The-First-Movie Sequel (Esquire.com)

Now, we can't help but ask: what trick will director Rian Johnson pull in 'Knives Out 3'?

[Ethan Hawke](https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/movies/a42308299/ethan-hawke-acting-career/), theoretically playing a character, shows up for about two minutes to zap any latent COVID out of the guests’ mouths. Johnson has his fun with the bad taste of the nouveau-riche. When the group’s boat arrives at the island, they’re met by a glass dock rising out of the water, as if it leads to a secret spy base. But it’s the most irresistibly charming of the bunch, in part because the tone is so consistently playful, never offering a pretense of actual savagery. Rather, Knives Out's mode is anthology, with each film designed not so much to be the next part of the story—rather, as one piece in a collection. [Kareem Abdul-Jabar](https://www.esquire.com/sports/a44024/what-ive-learned-kareem-abdul-jabbar/), Natasha Lyonne, and the late Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury play Among Us with Blanc over Zoom. Why 'Glass Onion' Is Angrier Than 'Knives Out' (The Atlantic)

This article contains mild spoilers for the film Knives Out. When I last spoke with the filmmaker Rian Johnson, in 2019, he was two years removed from ...

Johnson: Look, in terms of the Star Wars movie I did, I tried to give it a hell of an ending. Johnson: It’s not about the size of the picture, or the sound, or the sanctity of the space, or the magic of cinema, or whatever the fuck. I love endings so much that even doing the middle chapter of the trilogy, I tried to give it an ending. I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it’s a new novel off the shelf every time. Were you craving to get away from that, or did you immediately have the thought that you could do a bunch of [Benoit Blanc mysteries]? You look at today, and the genre’s having a little bit of a resurgence—right when the whole concept of a truth that, once revealed, sets everything right is being shaken to its foundation. This is someone who has the physical trappings of someone who would play it big, but he actually brings sensitivity to the role. But you gotta think, back in 2020, all of the current unpleasantness was a long way off. You need the heart of a thriller; you need some kind of actual story. It’s very easy to mistakenly assume that the mystery is what people are interested in, that the picking-up of clues and solving the mystery is going to keep people entertained. One thing I am conscious of when I’m writing is playing to the pleasure of the all-star cast. First of all, it’s a subgenre of the whodunit that I love—Evil Under the Sun, Death on the Nile, The Last of Sheila—the vacation mystery.

From politician Claire (Kathryn Hahn) to scientist Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.), here's a guide to the characters in the second Knives Out film.

The story has to function in terms of the suspects, the murder, and the victim. Benoit Blanc returns once again in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, this time hired by Helen Brand to solve the murder of her twin sister, Cassandra "Andi" Brand. Benoit convinces Helen to go undercover in Greece as Andi to solve her sister's murder, rightly guessing that the killer will be in attendance and thrown off by her presence. But you have to think of him as the detective, not as the central character. "Benoit Blanc is the constant North Star of all of these movies. But, soon, a real murder occurs, and it's up to Blanc to solve it before the police arrive from the mainland.
