SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long interrupted the start to change it to a ladder match with the Hardy Boyz and MNM getting added for the wildest impromptu match, However, there was a strange element to it that only fans watching in the moment will experience. Van Dam was arguably the best face Intercontinental Champion of that era, and Orton scoring a win over him to start his reign was pivotal.
