Glass Onion Review: Rian Johnson Eats the Rich with All Knives Out (Den of Geek)

Rian Johnson and Daniel Craig deepen the mystery of Benoit Blanc and his investigations of the wealthy elite via the supremely entertaining Glass Onion: A ...

Given the film’s lengthier setup, Glass Onion is able to better sketch its suspects and players than Knives Out. So his eagerness to party with a billionaire in Glass Onion is initially surprising… Her decision to come back and face all these people who betrayed her is the real mystery of the movie, at least until the Grim Reaper visits the kooky clan. Set on an entire villa in the sun-kissed Aegean, and told across an expansive 140 minutes, Glass Onion is happy to take its time. One is a disgraced fashion guru who’s settled into the infamy of social media celebrity due to posting whatever comes into her head, and the other is a Twitch influencer who knows exactly what he’s doing when hawking “boner pills” to video gamers alongside his much younger girlfriend Whiskey (Madelyn Cline). As the collection of suspects, all the performers swing big, drawing characters who are arguably more outlandish and cartoony than the Thrombey family in Knives Out. Instead of relying on a barrage of contradictory flashbacks and anecdotes, audiences and Benoit Blanc get to observe the suspects in real time. [Knives Out](https://www.denofgeek.com/knives-out/) and Glass Onion such satisfying potboilers is they aspire to more than confound and intrigue with a case of murder and side of red herrings. This also explains the decision to invite the great gentleman of leisure and deduction, Benoit Blanc. [Janelle Monáe](https://www.denofgeek.com/janelle-monae/)), is also in surprise attendance. But like his and [Daniel Craig](https://www.denofgeek.com/daniel-craig/)’s delightful sleuthing creation, Benoit Blanc, Johnson is a keen observer of hubris, vanity, and all the other ugly human traits that can make for a toxic personality, yet also a beautiful murder mystery. One difference between Glass Onion and its predecessor though is that even Craig’s reliably “Southern” sleuth is not sure what he’s looking for in this go-round.

The sequel to 'Knives Out' has many familiar faces among announced cast members, but a number of surprise guests also appear throughout.

He pops up in her raucous, laughably large COVID social bubble at the beginning of the movie. [Knives Out](https://time.com/5739463/knives-out-review/) was a smash-hit in 2019, so it’s no wonder that so many big names jumped at the chance to be included in its sequel, Glass Onion—especially if it included a ticket to the islands of Greece where the movie filmed. If not, we can at least appreciate Grant in an apron covered in flour, clearly picking up the pandemic baking trend. But apparently he has a lot of famous friends, and many of the cameos come in the form of celebrities playing themselves as they Zoom with a bored Benoit. The movie may also be paying a winking tribute to Sondheim’s past work. Lansbury, the beloved star of Murder, She Wrote, died in October, so fans will be heartened to see her onscreen one last time.

'Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery': Ending Explained (esquire.com)

We'll join the action just after the flashback following Benoit Blanc and Helen-as-Andi ends, when the Distuptors realise Duke's pistol is missing and Helen's ...

And Miles' murders are the essence of what makes him such a charlatan. Like his Glass Onion building they look complex, but there's nothing in the middle of them. Eventually, they work up to destroying the one thing, as he puts it, that nobody wants destroyed: the Mona Lisa. Klear kills him, and ensures he'll get his wish to be mentioned in the same breath as the Mona Lisa. His mates smashing those artworks is, weirdly enough, a reaction that fits Miles' view of the world. It's just that the breath is going to be saying, "Miles Bron, the guy who destroyed the Mona Lisa with his incredibly dangerous fuel". She realises it's in Miles' office, but as soon as she's got it and revealed who she actually is to the group, Miles burns the napkin with his absurdly powerful lighter. This, Blanc says, is because Lionel flagged up the existence of the cocktail napkin to Miles. Just as she'd noted earlier on, Kathryn Hahn's Claire realises they're in the middle of the feared "Hindenburg". Blanc concludes that Miles did all three murders – or, at least, two murders and one attempted murder – to make sure that Andi never made public the fact that Miles stole the Alpha company from her, and that she was the actual genius behind the idea which started Alpha. Helen launches a nugget of Klear at the fireplace. We'll join the action just after the flashback following Benoit Blanc and Helen-as-Andi ends, when the Distuptors realise Duke's pistol is missing and Helen's just taken a bullet right in the diary.

With its limited run in theaters, the fans of the series seem to agree with my sentiments. She fearlessly holds the film together and stands out amongst a cast of incredible veteran talent. This is easily the most entertaining and rewatchable Netflix Original of the year. Recently, Glass Onion was nominated for 6 Critics’ Choice Awards & 2 Golden Globes, as well as being named one of the Top Ten Films of 2022 by the National Board of Review. Her off-screen abilities to light up a room and be quick with a smile make her the perfect distraction for Rian Johnson’s magic trick. In contrast, Hudson’s Birdie Jay is the breezy, dim-witted delight that brings most of the levity in this tale. For me, the success of this sequel can be found in Rian Johnson’s unlikely inspiration: The Beatles. Though the film itself displays many mental & physical puzzle boxes, the winners of this fight skip the puzzles and go straight to the throat. In the first film, we encounter Blanc as a mysterious & quirky intellectual brought in by the police as an expert on a potential murder. The original made $311.4 million on a $40 million budget for Lionsgate & Media Rights Capital in 2019; plus, it carried an impressive 82 Metascore and was [Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/knives_out) with a 97% rating. As for the story, Johnson’s latest whodunit brings the considerable skills of Benoit Blanc to a lavish private estate on a Greek Island where he finds himself the lone outcast during an annual reunion of sorts centered around billionaire Bron and his distinctly disparate group of friends. Starved for franchises of any kind to compete with the likes of Disney & Warner, Netflix must believe that this particular series will check off many of the boxes they need to succeed.

The Netflix murder mystery is packed with stars having the time of their lives, which means audiences will too.

When the movie opens, it’s the middle of 2020’s COVID lockdowns and Bron’s friends are just as excited by the chance to gather again as I was to be in a theater. Glass Onion, by contrast, feels joyful and vibrant, even if we know we’re going to see a murder or two. I hope this becomes Netflix’s equivalent of HBO’s [The White Lotus](https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/white-lotus-butts-season-2), with each installment bringing us a new cast in a glamorous location. If you look closely, even the “Mona Lisa” is smiling just a little. The rest of the cast are at their peak too, especially Monáe, who gives a multilayered performance that bubbles into magnificent rage, and Hudson, who I don’t think has been this good in a role since Almost Famous in 2000. The host tells his stunned guests how Da Vinci was able to create the masterpiece using pioneering brushstrokes and technique. [physically and creatively exhausting](https://www.usatoday.com/story/entertainment/movies/2021/10/05/daniel-craig-no-time-to-die-james-bond-007/5986407001/), it seems likely that Craig only felt compelled to play yet another recurring protagonist because this role is so playful. But murder mysteries, in particular, are so enjoyable because they often feel like plays where the actors are encouraged to ramp up the acting so the people in the back of the theater can see. Like Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, Blanc is an effete and preening detective who is comfortable with his genius, doesn’t suffer fools, and longs for the next riddle to solve. 23, my advice is to gather as many friends and family as you can, put your phones in a box, dim the lights, and enjoy the ride. Craig returns as detective Benoit Blanc, who receives an invitation to attend a weekend murder mystery party on the private island of tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton doing his best Elon Musk impersonation). It’s hard not to when the cast is so plainly having a ball.

A trailer is a long way away, but it could come out sooner than other Netflix releases. However, “Knives Out 3” is untitled for now. Complex mystery movies take a long time to craft, so patience will be a virtue for Knives Out fans. In fact, Knives Out 3 is already confirmed, though there’s still plenty we don’t know about the third film in the whodunit trilogy. The answer to this question is also dependent on Rian Johnson. That means that the Benoit Blanc franchise will, at the very least, be a trilogy, and Daniel Craig is still on board to reprise his detective role.

Everything we know about Knives Out 3, the Rian Johnson movie starring Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc.

It would be reasonable to expect that Knives Out 3 could come out by 2025 at the latest—but possibly even sooner. [Netflix acquired the rights](https://collider.com/knives-out-2-3-netflix-daniel-craig-rian-johnson/) to both Knives Out 2 and 3. Much like a classic whodunit, the only recurring character will be Benoit Blanc. It'd be hard for a film like that to fail, especially considering audiences already know what to expect: a good murder, and an even better story of how a smart detective solved it. The standout performer, though, had to be Daniel Craig, who played the masterful detective (written about in The New Yorker, as characters played by Toni Collette and Jamie Lee Curtis both note) Benoit Blanc.
