Pre-Covid ridership slowly returning to Metro Bus and Rail (Buffalo News)

Ridership on Metro Bus and Rail is slowly bouncing back. The levels are nowhere near pre-Covid days, but officials of the Niagara Frontier Transportation ...

The most optimism for regaining lost riders may stem from resumption of sports and events downtown. In 2017, for example, transit agencies around the nation were noting significant drop-offs in riders, including a 2.2% drop in light rail trips in the second quarter of 2017 compared to the same period in 2016. But now the NFTA appears to be countering at least the loss attributed to Covid. The drop mirrored national trends showing an 11% decline in bus ridership during the same years just before Covid. The totals are still only about 60% of pre-Covid ridership, Morrell noted. Ridership now stands at about 47,300 for bus, and 9,600 for rail, according to NFTA figures for October.

Metro's beneficiaries should share in the cost of funding it (The Washington Post)

Research shows that the percent change in quantity (ridership) to the percent change in price (fare) can range from -0.10 to -0.50. Meanwhile, the 100 percent decrease in fare would result in a loss of fare box revenue that could cover 20 percent to 40 percent of transit operating costs. Metro’s general manager stated that to solve the long-term question of Metro funding, “the first piece is us gaining trust and credibility.” Wouldn’t a request for congressional funding be better received if those business interests receiving direct measurable economic benefits also contributed to funding Metro? but failed to address Metro’s [projected deficits](https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2022/09/19/metro-pandemic-budget-commuters-telework/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2) of $527 million for the fiscal year starting in July 2024 and $731 million four years later. Council [voted](https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2022/12/06/dc-council-free-metrobus-vote/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2) to spend $42 million starting in July for free boarding of buses originating in D.C.

However, those previous delays did not result in the suspension of any trips. Those taken out of service were added to Metro’s fleet in 2015, 2017 and 2018. Other agencies across the country have so far not raised the same issue. The steering problem did not result in any injuries or crashes. When full service will return depends on the delivery of key parts, which have yet to arrive. The issue is not tied to all of Metro’s New Flyer buses; many remain in service.

In the latest film following the life and legacy of Whitney Houston, 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody,' Nafessa Williams takes on the role of Houston's former.

And also for a new generation who may not know who she is, they’re going to be introduced to her catalog. Going to therapy is a very normal and okay thing and [I] just want to voice that—especially in our community in Philly, within the Black community. Ultimately, not being able to be with the person you want to be with, I can’t imagine the strain that that pulls on your mental health. Some of these songs, I completely hear them differently now knowing more about her relationships and just who she was as a person. And that speaks to her strength, her authenticity, and I really admired that. There’s a love story with her fans, there’s a love story with her and Clive Davis, obviously with her and Bobby, and then her and Whitney with her family, her mother, her father and [her daughter]. I understood her loyalty, I understood their relationship, and that was a good source of information that I led with. And even still knowing that they weren’t able to be together, they still found a way to do it. I think as you said, you have liberty when you’re playing a character who no one knows or when you’re creating [it] yourself, but when you’re playing someone who’s a real person, my approach was to handle it with sensitivity and with a lot of empathy and to make sure that I represented Robyn in the best light. Also a lot of their friends and family were on set with us, so I was able to pick their brains about who Robyn is and what she’s like. It’s a lot of pressure playing someone who’s a real person and someone who’s still alive and who’s potentially going to see your work portrayed as them. Also, knowing that her family was supportive and also a part of this project, it just gave me the approval to want do it.
