“Again, the suspension occurred with no warning, process or explanation — this time as our reporter merely sought comment from Musk for a story,” Buzbee said. “I won’t say I didn’t anticipate it,” Lorenz said in a phone interview early Sunday with The Associated Press. He then took aim at journalists who were writing about the jet-tracking account, which can still be found on other sites including Mastodon, Facebook, Instagram and Truth Social, alleging that they were broadcasting “basically assassination coordinates.” Twitter previously took action against one of the rivals, Mastodon, after its main Twitter account tweeted about the @ElonJet controversy last week. Some Twitter users have included links to their new Mastodon profile and encouraged followers to find them there. Twitter gave no explanation for why the blacklist included those seven websites but not others such as Parler, TikTok or LinkedIn.

In addition to being the main character every day, Musk now takes over another mantle: that of the guy for whom "there is always a tweet." Then, Twitter retroactively justified those suspensions with a similarly half-baked prohibition on the live geolocation of other users. [Thursday Night Massacre](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December_15,_2022_Twitter_suspensions)," in which Musk suspended the accounts of several journalists covering his ban on ElonJet, an account that automatically tweeted public data about the current location of his private jet.

Twitter users will no longer be able to link to certain rival social media websites, including Facebook, Instagram and Mastodon.

Mastodon has grown rapidly as an alternative for Twitter users who are unhappy with Musk’s overhaul of Twitter since he bought the company [for $44 billion in late October](https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2022/04/25/elon-musk-twitter-ownership-deal/7437519001/) and began restoring accounts that ran afoul of the previous Twitter leadership's rules against hateful conduct and other harms. “I won’t say I didn’t anticipate it,” Lorenz said in a phone interview early Sunday with The Associated Press. Mastodon Features That Twitter Should Steal (but Won't) (WIRED)

Elon Musk's platform could learn a thing or two from its most popular alternative—like how to build a social platform people actually want to be on.

As a red-blooded Canadian living in a strange, foreign land, I sometimes like to post about hockey—a habit that confounds and confuses my American friends. It's also nice to know that quick conversations with friends and strangers aren't going to be part of the public record for the rest of my life, which I recently realized is a very strange thing we're all consenting to for some reason. It’s odd that I have to use a third-party service for this; it would be nice if I could do this on Twitter itself. With Mastodon's content warning system, I can label such posts “Hockey/Mental Health.” Anyone interested in reading my thoughts about my lifelong love of the Toronto Maple Leafs—and how that relates to my inability to believe that good things can happen in my life, no matter how hard I try—can decide to click the post in order to read it. Now, Elon Musk knows about Mastodon—he recently blocked the service’s Twitter account, then started marking all links to Mastodon as spam—a very cool and free speech thing to do. After that he should check out Mastodon, because it offers all kinds of features that actually make it a great town square.

Why Is Mastodon Winning the Twitter vs Mastodon Debate? (Industry Leaders Magazine)

In the Twitter vs Mastodon war, although initially find it tough to navigate the latter, its customization and ad-free UI make it a hit.

A vast majority of the users seem to mention their struggle with understanding Mastodon’s confusing UI/ UX. Differences between Twitter and Mastodon are evident when it comes to verifying identities. YET excellent community and idea IF you do the work to set it up/figure it out. Mastodon is not just a Twitter alternative to some but also an opportunity to create something they want and enjoy. Also, if users want to tag someone who is part of a different community they must include the username and community handle. The Mastodon social media app might appear a little confusing at first but most users vouch that it is worth the trouble. As it is organized on a number of different servers, the customizations options are just as many. Twitter, on the other hand, has made major changes to its service, even making recommended feed a default setting. Musk seems to recognize that a Twitter vs Mastodon war is brewing. If there was a Twitter vs Mastodon scenario on who will store your data until eternity, Twitter wins hands down. Individuals can choose the server they like as it has categories from journalism to games. The new social networking site seems to mirror Twitter’s features but has its own personality.

Twitter will no longer let users include links to certain banned social networks, including Instagram, Facebook, and Mastodon, in their profiles or tweets.

Musk claims the journalists “doxxed” his location and later had Twitter implement a policy that bans “live location information” as well as “links to 3rd-party URL(s) of travel routes.” While [Musk later reinstated most of the banned accounts](https://www.theverge.com/2022/12/17/23513620/elon-musk-suspended-journalists-twitter-reinstated-elonjet) after polling users on whether Twitter should lift their suspensions, he briefly suspended The Washington Post reporter Taylor Lorenz [for “prior doxxing action](https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1604482428281753601?s=20&t=zaWBeHPASkUELlZ8_gk9dA).” [Jack Dorsey replied](https://twitter.com/jack/status/1604554032831287298?s=20&t=GP2gyM09qaPQDQyoKKAVTQ) “why?” [Dorsey recently donated around $245,000](https://www.coindesk.com/tech/2022/12/15/jack-dorsey-gives-decentralized-social-network-nostr-14-btc-in-funding/) to the development of the decentralized social network Nostr, which is included in Twitter’s ban. Trying to tweet out a link to several Mastodon servers or the site itself results in an error message, stating: “We can’t complete this request because this link has been identified by Twitter or our partners as being potentially harmful.” We don’t know whether Twitter will eventually disable links from the banned platforms in a similar manner, but at this time of writing, it seems users are still able to post links from these networks. Twitter says it will remove any tweets that contain violations of the policy and could temporarily suspend users with links to banned social platforms in their profiles. We recognize that certain social media platforms provide alternative experiences to Twitter, and allow users to post content to Twitter from these platforms. Despite all of this, Twitter is still fine with the paid promotion of these banned platforms (although this feature

Twitter backtracks on policy banning links to competitors (The Desk)

Twitter has walked back and policy that prohibited users from linking to their accounts on Facebook, Instagram and Mastodon.

It came several days after the official “Join Mastodon” profile on Twitter was suspended for purported violations of Twitter’s rules. A spokesperson for Twitter’s trust and safety team — which has largely been gutted over the past few weeks due to layoffs — said the move was intended to prevent “free promotion” of competing streaming services. The ban extended to social media portfolio services like Linktree.

Like Truth Social and Parler, the apps were created as direct alternatives to Twitter. Post is funded by the CEO of the navigation app WAZE and was created another direct opponent to Twitter. The app which looks and functions a lot like Twitter was created by Trump after he was permanently suspended from Twitter. Nostr is another decentralised social network app that promotes itself by being 'censorship resistant'. However, Twitter also said that their new policy will still “allow paid advertisement/promotion for any of the prohibited social media platforms.” Twitter has made headlines again after banning users from promoting other social media applications on the platform for free.
