Beverly Hills Cop is Eddie Murphy's most famous franchise, but he's made his dislike of the sequels well-known, even dubbing one "atrocious."
The Netflix-produced follow-up will likely land in 2023, and will hopefully be the first Beverly Hills Cop sequel the star actually likes. While it's a little better than even the star himself suggests, Beverly Hills Cop III succeeded in stalling the franchise. Beverly Hills Cop III is a strange hybrid of sequel and Die Hard rip-off, finding Axel investigating counterfeiters in a theme park. Beverly Hills Cop II was helmed by Tony Scott, who gave it a great visual look, while Murphy works hard to inject it with life. Beverly Hills Cop II was almost as successful as the original, though Murphy told Rolling Stone in 1989 that "Beverly Hills Cop II was probably the most successful mediocre picture in history." During a 2006 episode of Inside The Actor's Studio, Murphy dubbed Part III "atrocious" and it was such a disgrace "the character was kind of banished for a while (from Hollywood)."
