What Real Madrid can expect from Endrick – a defender's nightmare ... (The Athletic)

Real Madrid have bet big on another teenage Brazilian talent - but in Endrick, the Spanish giants look to have recruited a special talent.

I know that to be able to play in Europe, I have to perform to a high level at Palmeiras, and to play for Palmeiras, I have to be outstanding for the youth team. Two minutes after that first goal against Argentina, Endrick was set clear once again but despite leaving his markers for dead, he scuffed a shot straight at the keeper. When Argentina eventually do kick off, Endrick crouches down with his hands on the turf as if he’s in the blocks for a 100-metre race. The obvious comparison to Endrick — a dynamic, diminutive Brazilian striker — is Romario and there certainly are similarities, but these are players from different eras: by necessity, Endrick works far harder and presses more than Romario. His performances in various international youth tournaments, then in the Palmeiras age groups, and finally in the first team, meant the agreement was signed and sealed before the end of the year. It’s a good example of why Endrick looks like he is, to use a complex slice of technical jargon, a complete pain in the arse for defenders. Then, in the second half, Endrick chased a ball through and two defenders converged to halt his progress. There were a few second-half cameos but against Athletico Paranaense at the end of that month, he was introduced at half-time and it took about 15 minutes for him to make his mark. There was an acceptance that a move to Europe at some stage was inevitable. Since signing his first senior contract in the summer, Endrick has been eased into the Palmeiras first team. Their policy of snapping up the best talents in Brazil, something broadly driven by their “scouting guru” Juni Calafat, has given them a track record of success with Endrick’s countrymen, one of whom shares his representatives: Vinicius is managed by the same company that has been advising Endrick and his family, and with things having gone so well for him in Spain, Real felt like the safest bet. At his incredibly young age (for point of reference: Messi had already competed in one World Cup before Endrick was even born), it’s always useful to deploy hefty amounts of caution.
