Holidays passing you by? Follow these tips to help you slow down ... (UAB News)

Practicing mindfulness can be the key to slowing down and savoring the season. The holiday season is filled with activities — shopping for gifts, family ...

If you are trying to meditate, it can be very challenging to sit still and be present with your thoughts. However, Hays wants to remind people that wandering thoughts and distractions are a guaranteed part of the process, and it is OK when one’s mind wanders while trying to practice mindfulness. The beauty of mindfulness is that you can practice doing nearly any activity mindfully, which means you don’t have to set aside large chunks of time in your day to benefit from this practice.” Mindfulness is all about paying attention to the present moment without judgment. “When your thoughts wander, the key is to observe these distractions without judgment,” Hays said. Use these few seconds to shift your focus back to the present moment and resist the urge to focus on past or future events of the day. Take a walk before or after your holiday dinner and incorporate mindfulness by focusing on the movements of your body, how these movements make you feel, your breathing and your surroundings. You could have a mindful moment in front of your tree by noticing all of the lights and the tiniest details on your ornaments, all while paying attention to the scent of fresh balsam that may rekindle memories of holidays past.” “For most of us, the idea of setting aside 15-30 minutes a day to practice mindfulness sounds more like a burdensome chore than a helpful addition to our well-being,” Hays said. While eating, notice how everything tastes and smells, the temperature of your food, and the colors of the food on your plate. Simply focusing your awareness and labeling your thoughts and emotions without judgment can be a powerful mindfulness practice. “Mindfulness is simply the act of doing an activity with your full attention and awareness,” Hays said.

Business Owners: Get Your Holiday Greetings Right (Inc.com)

Holiday greetings can build a relationship or hurt it. These tips to follow and gaffes to avoid will help you.

Do not write "Happy New Years" unless you are referring to an upcoming series of years (which I presume you are not). Use "Season's Greetings" since the greetings belong to the season. Remember, if you are writing to someone you know through your business, you may want to retain your professional persona. If you know they're Jewish and are likely to celebrate the holiday, wish them a Happy Chanukah. The winter holidays bring great joy to many people--along with potential risks to a businessperson's credibility. Similarly, you would write "Happy New Year" if you are referring to the whole year. And let's face it, "Happy Holidays" is about as plain-vanilla as you can get. However, if you want your message to stand out, do your homework and discover something that matters to the other person. However, if you know that your reader is Christian, don't be afraid to wish them a Merry Christmas. But don't try to sell something in the holiday card for business clients. If you lack information about your reader's life or business, you might have to use this anodyne phrase. As business communicators, we want our clients and colleagues to feel warmly [greeted](https://www.inc.com/peter-gasca/greeting-card-etiquette-4-tips.html)--yet we do not want to offend or overstep.

Kavanaugh Holiday Party Appearance Raises More Ethics Questions (Bloomberg Law)

Conservatives on the US Supreme Court don't seem too concerned about appearances this holiday season.

The Supreme Court has heard arguments in several high profile cases this term already, including challenges to affirmative action and a case that seeks to give state legislatures more power to set federal election laws. The court has yet to issue a decision in either dispute. The decision let private companies claim religious exemptions from the mandate in the Affordable Care Act, which requires corporations to cover birth control. The news comes a week after a Christian advocacy group’s former leader was questioned by the House Judiciary Committee about his allegations that Justice Samuel Alito leaked the outcome of the Supreme Court’s 2014 decision in Burwell v. For example, Justice Sonia Sotomayor in June gave a talk at an event hosted by the liberal American Constitution Society. Democrats have recently renewed calls for sitting Supreme Court justices to follow a formal judicial code of ethics.

7 Ways to Spend Less Time on Your Phone These Holidays (Everyday Health)

But as holiday festivities, opportunities to socialize with loved ones, and maybe some time off from work abound — this time of year may be the least optimal ...

Instead of multitasking, take time to disconnect and put the phone away so that you can be present in special holiday moments. Feeling the need to take numerous photos likely means that you’ll have your phone in your hand much of the time. Time spent with friends and family, traveling, or partaking in other holiday festivities makes for great memories, as well as photos that you may be tempted to share on social media. “Apps that are more social or just for fun may make it harder to disconnect and spend less time on your phone.” Don’t let a quick check of your phone at a holiday party keep you away from the festivities. You don’t need a photograph of every moment at your holiday party. “As a family, establish specific times and spaces when you all agree to be fully present and not distracted by devices,” Grant suggests. Decide as a group if you want to set “phone-free” time and when that will be. [study](https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/0013916514539755), for instance, found that you are less likely to engage in empathetic, quality conversations when a mobile device is present. Try it even just temporarily for the holiday season, Grant suggests. Willpower alone is often not enough to make real changes in your relationship with technology, so putting additional measures in place can be more effective. It can wait until morning, but now you’ve opened the email and you might as well just get it done while it’s top of mind.

Hallmark vs. Great American Family: Who's Winning the Holiday ... (Decider)

Hallmark and Great American Family are home to over 50 holiday movies this year, but which one is winning the ratings war? And which one is winning the ...

And don’t forget: Hallmark also scored its [most-watched movie since 2019](https://twitter.com/SleepyKittyPaw/status/1595082989498679298) in Three Wise Men and a Baby — which is also the most-watched TV movie of 2022 across all of cable. [A Holiday Spectacular](https://decider.com/2022/11/28/a-holiday-spectacular-hallmark-review/) on Hallmark during that time. This is the first year since 2014 that Hallmark has not had both a Candace Cameron Bure movie and a Danica McKellar movie in their holiday lineup. However, Great American Family is far from overtaking or even tying Hallmark in the ratings. [defection from Hallmark to Great American Media in April 2022](https://decider.com/2022/04/19/gac-poaches-candace-cameron-bure-from-hallmark/). The branding is beyond confusing and that’s evidenced by the fact that more people google “GAC” than “Great American Family,” which is the actual name of the network. [Wall Street Journal profile](https://www.wsj.com/articles/candace-cameron-bure-great-american-family-11668205295) wherein she said that GAF’s holiday movies [will focus on “traditional marriage”](https://decider.com/2022/11/15/candace-cameron-bure-no-same-sex-couples-great-american-family-movies/) (which can be taken as [coded, homophobic language](https://decider.com/2022/11/15/candace-cameron-bure-hallmark-movies-have-not-changed-traditional-marriage/)). As for GAF, it’s very hard to track its imprint because the network was known as GAC (Great American Country) last year, Great American Family this year, is part of Great American Media, and has a lineup of movies called Great American Christmas. Just look at the graph above, which charts all of the times that a Hallmark movie went head-to-head with a Great American Family movie this season. Looking at Google search trends for the duration of the holiday movie season, Hallmark is consistently on top. And in the other corner is the rookie network Great American Family, a.k.a. Christmas is a joyous time of peace and togetherness — but there’s a pop culture clash underway on the most unlikely battleground of all: holiday TV movies.

New Paltz's Holiday Hoopla, a parade and winter carnival in New Paltz, was held on Saturday, December 10.

“I met with four of them a couple of months ago at a candlelight vigil. “I couldn’t save my own son, but now I can help other people and direct them to the help they need.” She donates a portion of her profits from cupcake sales to help match young adults with recovery coaches and direct them to rehabilitation facilities. Live music at the park was supplied by the David Chapman Band, students from the New Paltz Middle School Band, the Resisterhood Choir and the Master’s Touch Choir, ending up with a karaoke session. This year, things were very different, with a crowd gathered face-to-face in a festive mood at Hasbrouck Park, after the line of march followed the traditional parade route from the New Paltz Middle School down Main Street and up Plattekill Avenue. Saturday, December 10 provided brisk-but-clear weather for the third annual iteration of Holiday Hoopla, a free winter carnival sponsored by the Town of New Paltz and the Ulster Prevention Council. Its name arose out of the featured entertainment: Hula Hoopers for Humanity, who pranced and twirled at each of the stops on the parade route.

DTC Briefing: After two years of disruptions, holiday pop-ups make a ... (Modern Retail)

With holiday shopping in full swing, DTC brands are once again betting on temporary pop-ups to entice visitors.

DTC women’s fashion brand Marcella was another participant at Master of Good, and used the weekend pop-up as a way to promote Marcella’s sustainability and social impact missions to new people. “I think the response to the pop-up thus far truly reflects our customers’ enthusiasm too,” she said. [waited in the rain](https://www.instagram.com/p/CluoGqdLuNQ/) for the pop-up to open on its first day. The idea follows two years of Bearaby-funded research conducted in partnership with Duke University, which found that Black Friday is one of the most stressful days of the year. On Black Friday, Bearaby launched the #WeightOutBlackFriday campaign, which encourages shoppers to “stop before they shop” to get calm and relaxed. As part of the pop-up, which runs through mid-January, visitors can sit in a Bearaby-covered bench to recharge during their shopping trips. Melissa Gonzalez, founder of experiential retail firm The Lionesque Group, said this year customers want to discover new products and interact with people during their holiday shopping. “But we’ve always missed that sensory element of our customers being able to smell and taste our bright and powerful spices before they make a purchase.” “I think in 2021, brands were still cautiously optimistic — and while they turned to experiential design they didn’t fully dive back into in-store event planning,” Gonzalez said. The pop-up is being hosted inside a Counter Culture Coffee location, in New York’s Soho neighborhood, and will run from Dec. Now, Diaspora is ready to get back to in-person events with a pop-up inspired by Indian spice markets. Younger brands that experienced record e-commerce growth during the pandemic are now laser-focused on reaching more new customers in person, especially during the all-important holiday season.
