She has a good job and a devoted boyfriend who is living with her in a house that we helped her buy. You state that your daughter will not see a doctor — and yet she did see a doctor, six months ago. My own parents allowed this and then exhausted themselves trying to please everyone. We assume that our son will ask Kris to marry him — possibly this Christmas. Keep this in mind as you weigh your response. You are either bringing up this topic or she is sharing these details with you, perhaps testing your response. I have an adult son in his mid-20s. I have a parenting question. How and why has your daughter’s BMI (body mass index) come up in conversation? She has done several extreme fad diets, including vegan and keto, but now has thrown herself into a carb-heavy diet and has a BMI of over 35. She has some social anxiety but is quite adamant about her own judgment. She is now 100 pounds over her BMI of 25, a healthy weight.

Majority of patients with PCOS have a BMI value which is high and present with typical features such as hyperandrogenism, polycystic ovaries and obesity. Women with lean PCOS present with normal or low BMI along with hirsutism, acne, infertility and polycystic ovaries (On ultrasound scan). Insulin resistance is another important finding in patients presenting with PCOS. Majority of such patients do present with typical symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles and acne. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a complex and a varied group of endocrine disorder, occurring due to synergistic interaction of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors, associated with both reproductive and metabolic abnormalities resulting in short-and long-term consequences on the women’s health. This leads to features such as excess body hair (hirsutism), acne in the lower face, neck, chest and upper aspect of the back (seen in 20-40% of PCOS cases) and male pattern balding (androgenic alopecia).

Kathy's Window: Why the Body Mass Index (BMI) is bull and racist ... (Highway Mail)

The BMI is not a viable measurement of health and discriminates against people of colour, women and fat people.

But also remember, your health is not always in your control, and … He changed the name of Quetelet’s Index to ‘Body Mass Index’, thus forming the official BMI. Then, on a Wednesday morning in 1998, thousands of Americans woke up obese. Cue ahead to the early 20th century, when weight first became an indicator of health – by insurance companies, not medical doctors or scientists. The Body Mass Index was not a standard set up by a nutritional scientist or medical doctor but by a Belgian academic named Adolphe Quetelet (although it wasn’t called BMI at the time). The statistician’s index, which had been mostly forgotten, entered the realm of individual healthcare – directly counter to Quetelet’s original intentions. The statistics gathered for the insurance companies didn’t factor in age and were gathered from individuals’ perceptions of themselves, and every insurance company had a different standard. The Quetelet Index wasn’t set up to measure weight but to classify population groups. I grabbed the offer, excited to get some professional advice. Maybe it was ignorance or being part of a messed-up system. I don’t remember everything she said and did, but what stayed with me was her obvious irritation and disapproval towards me. An over-50 Generation Xer sees life through a new lens: Kathy’s Window is where Kathy shares her thoughts on the world through a new lens.
