Lord Asriel's S3 Return Makes Up For His Dark Materials' Lost Episode (Screen Rant)

James McAvoy's Lord Asriel returns in His Dark Materials season 3 with two key episodes after skipping most of His Dark Materials season 2.

Considering how important Lord Asriel will be for His Dark Materials’ final season, his almost total absence in season 2 was a problem. Although it’s understandable that His Dark Materials season 2 had to scrap the Asriel-centered episode, it would have been a valuable addition to the story. Given how accurate to the books HBO’s His Dark Materials has been, including the season 3 double-premiere, it is safe to say that Asriel will have a lot of screen time in the final season. Lord Asriel’s war on the Authority and Metatron sets the tone for the final book in the His Dark Materials trilogy. And I think it was really juicy to play, because there's lots of sadness in that too, and loss as well as frustration, upset and disappointment. And part of me felt like actually when she was separated from her monkey, she was kind of depressed and without energy, she was completely opposite of what she is in the public. I also sort of got a sense that she takes risks, but she also doesn't really value the self-loathing in her. But she's still trying to be close to her and be close to that power. Actually, Asriel's trying to hold onto you, trying to make you love him, trying to f**king show up, say, "Look, I'm going to f**king murder an angel in front of you," and all of that, but actually… I always got the sense that she hated being in the presence of her monkey, of herself. To be close to anything powerful is exciting for her and gives her agency. about how your relationship with Lyra, it's more about trying to hold on, you're keeping her asleep, you're drugging her so you can just f**king hold on. And whether it's love or whether it's actually just her usual kind of desire to be close to something that is going to rule the world, that's up to people to interpret. But I do think what he's trying to do is the right thing. I honestly think, I mean throughout the course of the three seasons, the only thing she starts to believe in is Lyra, and believes in what she has to offer.

Book Review: 'The Golden Compass: A His Dark Materials Novel' (The Cosmic Circus)

Luna Gauthier reviews The Golden Compass, the first book in the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman, now adapted by HBO.

Most people see Pullman’s work as a complete rebuke and condemnation of the church, and I do not deny that the church itself is bad in his story. It’s a lot to take in but it’s a great ride. Only when people are given the freedom to learn, grow, make choices and make mistakes do things tend to turn out right and balance is maintained in the universe. I think anyone who is looking for a good adventure, a deep thinking exercise, or both, will really enjoy this book and what it has to offer. They can also take on the forms of animals that the person has never seen in any context in real life, begging the question of collective consciousness. But she gets to actually do and say the things that children can’t because adults stop them. She has all the emotions that a child has, all the knee-jerk reactions to events. She decides that she must find a way to save him and that is her main goal from then on. She comes ever closer to a choice that will affect not just her but an untold number of universes. He tells her it belongs to her and that she should keep it secret and safe. I bought my copy from a book order in the third grade and I have read it… In her attempts to find and save Roger, Lyra meets incredible allies like Lord Faa, Ma Costa, and the armored bear Iofur.
