I realise this is an unorthodox decision, and am pondering how much me boycotting the World Cup will even matter, but I simply refuse to contribute to the Qatari and Fifa propaganda machine. With that said, and with a heavy heart, I’m opting out of this World Cup entirely, because I simply cannot fathom how far the corruption and human rights abuses have taken hold of our beloved game. As noisy as they were pretty, the whizzes, whees and bangs reportedly woke up several of the players, who are now all knackered and cranky, albeit armed with a half-decent excuse should it all go n1pples up. Only problem being, they don’t have a good record in France, where they’ve never won a competitive fixture, so if history is any guide, and if being Spurs is any guide, this one on Tuesday evening is going right down to the wire. Leagues One and Two, and non-league play on throughout November and December. Sub-optimal preparation – and that’s before we get to the fact Marseille have four former Gunners in their squad in Alexis Sánchez, Mattéo Guendouzi, Nuno Tavares and Sead Kolasinac. Spurs currently sit atop Group D, but it’s tight, and they need a point on the French Riviera if they’re to make it through to the knockout stage. He’ll not be able to talk to his team in the dressing room beforehand, or during the half-time break. “He is a very good coach and a massive part of the team but thankfully he has very good staff,” cheered Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, neatly bodyswerving the elephant in the room that argues, given Conte’s managerial record in Big Cup, his enforced absence could actually prove beneficial. Indeed, unless Tottenham have managed to train his lid to surreptitiously scamper up and down stairs carrying notes, Conte will have no influence whatsoever on the match.

Tottenham beats Marseille 2-1, advances in Champions League (The Seattle Times)

Tottenham qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League after recovering from a woeful first-half performance to beat Marseille 2-1 and win its group.

“It was very difficult in the first half,” said Tottenham assistant coach Cristian Stellini, filling in for Conte on the touchline. Marseille’s players poured forward in search of a winner, much to the annoyance of its animated coach, Igor Tudor. “We could feel in the first half a team was playing without the fear to lose — it was Marseille,” Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said. He was mostly unmoved until the late goal, which brought out a wild celebration by Conte. Found by a cross to the far post, Kolasinac headed wide from barely two meters out. The forward, who is set to play at the World Cup for South Korea, appeared to be unsteady on his feet.

Tottenham topped its Champions League group in the end, and it's in fine standing in the Premier League. But do Spurs have another gear?

In the end, Tottenham did win it, with Kane releasing Højbjerg to slam in a spectacular finish in the final seconds, as Marseille committed everything forward. Emerson Royal came on for Ryan Sessegnon, and Tottenham, with Kane and Rodrigo Bentancur to the fore, began to take a few more risks and progress higher up the pitch. But domestic defeats to Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle have exposed the limitations of the squad. The signings of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perišić, added to the upturn in form toward the end of last season, had brought optimism that there could be, if not a serious title challenge, then at least comfortable qualification for the Champions League and perhaps a run deep in the competition. Marseille on Tuesday, but a come-from-behind, 2–1 win at the death took it through to the last 16 of the Champions League as a group winner. It played poorly in the first half, improved in the second and ended up with the result it needed.

The noise that greeted the goal was deafening. Imposing Congolese defender Mbemba then opened the scoring in the second added minute at the end of the half, rising at the back post to connect with a Veretout cross and beat Lloris with a towering header. By that point the Premier League side had already lost Son, who was left looking decidedly groggy after suffering a head knock in an aerial challenge with Mbemba, and had to come off. The result was earned in adversity for the Premier League side, who were without the presence on the touchline of the suspended Conte and also lost Son Heung-min to a head injury in the first half. "It was terrible the goal we conceded because it came from a corner that was taken quickly and we were not prepared. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored with the last kick of the game as Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Marseille 2-1 on Tuesday and qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League.

Panic over! Tottenham qualify for Champions League knockout ... (Goal.com)

A late strike from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg secured Tottenham's place in the Champions League last 16 with a 2-1 win away to Marseille.

Sanchez was desperate for a goal and was only denied by poor fortune and desperate defending, but his front-footed display from the first whistle was key to energising his side and pushed them onto Spurs from the off. WHAT NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM? THE BIGGER PICTURE: Injuries ought to have slowed the game down in Tottenham's favour in an interrupted first half, but instead they drowned under the deafening noise coming from the Stade Velodrome.

But in order to get the best out of yourself, you have to play where you can feel most comfortable and do what you can do best.” He was always a good guy, a good man, on the pitch and off the pitch. It would be a multi-purpose home for the club. Callum Hudson-Odoi left Chelsea to join Bayer Leverkusen on loan over the summer. The project would have cost €2.5 billion apparently. Should Tottenham win, it would provide a substantial blow to Liverpool's season and their hopes of the top four. The book claims that Perez considered moving the storied Liga club from the Santiago Bernabeu to a new abode. The real test of the death of 'Spursy-ness' comes over the weekend, though. On the balance of probabilities, Tottenham just made Liverpool's Champions League campaign infinitely harder. Tottenham are through to the last 16, but does it have to be this hard? (The Guardian)

Champions League win in Marseille raises questions about Spurs' style – but there is a chance to build something. Harry Kane applauds the Spurs fans.

This is the way of this team. This feels like an oversight, or a misreading of the rules. From there the second half was gripping, but gripping in a way that shouldn’t have been required. Højbjerg won it at the death with a wonderful finish. There was even something agreeable in Clément Lenglet scoring the equaliser, excellent on the night, delighted with his moment and, let’s face it, a quiz question in the making in years to come. And whatever the manner of victory, this is a significant moment. And through this there was a familiar sadness about watching Harry Kane in this team. Take the football out of this. At the very least, does it have to be this hard? Spurs are also the 10th richest football club in the world. Failing to make it through this group would have been a devastating blow: financially, but also in terms of heft and lustre. Conte is a managerial paradox in his own right.

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte 'likes' N'Golo Kante but transfer ... (Daily Express)

Tottenham and Barcelona could go head to head for N'Golo Kante's signature next summer.

That's set to keep him out of action until February next year, preventing him from turning out at the World Cup this month. Spurs already have an established midfield duo in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur, with the likes of Oliver Skipp and Yves Bissouma waiting in the wings to take their places. Affording his wages may be a tough one for Spurs but acquiring a player of such pedigree for free is an opportunity that doesn't come around often. Kante will fall into that category when the transfer window swings open on January 1, meaning Spurs would be forced to watch on helplessly if Barca manage to lay a tempting offer on the table. The Lilywhites may have to fend off rival interest from [Barcelona](/latest/barcelona-fc), however, with Kante approaching the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge. Foreign clubs are at liberty to negotiate pre-contract arrangements with players entering the final six months of their deals.
