'Nothing Is Off the Table': City Leaders Mull What To Do With SF's ... (The San Francisco Standard)

Lure SF businesses back or convert offices to housing? Nothing should be off-limits when it comes to reviving Downtown, say city leaders.

[remote work is here to stay](https://sfstandard.com/business/mayor-breed-sf-budget-officials-acknowledge-remote-work-is-here-to-stay/)—a reality with potentially serious implications for the city’s bottom line. Even after Breed announced [a new fleet of community ambassadors Downtown](https://sfstandard.com/criminal-justice/san-franciscos-answer-to-safety-concerns-is-more-community-ambassadors/), there simply aren’t not enough police Downtown for people to feel safe visiting or coming to work or at night, Rose said. The latter resulted in a $2.2 million economic impact by bringing people Downtown to shop in the evening, Silver said. “This is a pivotal moment where we need to fight for every individual business to stay and come here.” None of them, including Crescimano, is giving up on Downtown. 1, local business and public leaders honed in on public safety and potential business incentives to shore up Downtown, which remains markedly empty compared with the downtowns of other U.S.

5 Ways San Francisco's Younger Voters Differ From Their Elders (The San Francisco Standard)

Check out our findings below to see how younger voters see politics and culture in San Francisco. SOTA students walk out of class on April 15, 2022 to protest ...

"I'm really frustrated by how inaccessible San Francisco has become to live in and how many of my childhood friends who were born and raised here have been pushed out because they can't afford to live here, and/or because of the anti-Black racism,” said Lauren, a 32-year-old. Echoing their more progressive stances on policing and crime, young voters were less likely to see police arrests for drug dealing/usage as a viable solution for homelessness in SF. Younger voters don’t have a lot of love for the tech industry either, voicing concerns that its sky-high salaries have made SF inaccessible to service workers and creatives. [Like LGBTQ+ voters](https://sfstandard.com/research-data/san-francisco-lgbtq-queer-gay-transgender-lesbian-voter-profile/), younger poll respondents expressed concerns about [the rising NIMBY movement ](https://sfstandard.com/housing-development/happy-one-year-anniversary-to-sfs-peak-nimby-moment/)in SF, [questioning byzantine permitting and construction processes](https://sfstandard.com/housing-development/how-san-francisco-makes-it-insanely-hard-to-build-housing/) that, in their minds, have blocked new housing and left behind the city’s vulnerable populations. The liberal and vibrant culture of SF is a fabulous foundation for which these communities can grow.” And yet, voters aged 18 to 34 report the highest levels of satisfaction out of any age group in San Francisco. [two different housing measures on the November ballot](https://sfstandard.com/housing-development/confused-about-the-two-housing-ballot-measures-heres-what-to-know/), housing has become a hot-button topic in local politics. [young people love San Francisco](https://sfstandard.com/community/gen-z-happy-san-francisco-glassdoor-study-job-satisfaction/), and have historically reported higher levels of satisfaction than their older peers. A third work in the tech industry, nearly all are Democrats, a majority are public transit riders and SF’s youngest voters are more than twice as likely as the average San Franciscan to be currently dating someone—sound about right for the fast-paced 20-somethings of the city? About 23% of young voters intend to leave SF in the short-term, compared with just 16% of all voters. “I currently live with three roommates while being a full-time teacher and just wish I could afford at least the studio on my own.” And they’re invested in local politics, too: Gen Zers [like this teenage transit advocate](https://sfstandard.com/know-your-neighbors/public-transit-advocate-fern-k-hahn-wants-to-build-a-better-tomorrow-by-putting-more-lines-on-the-map/) have advanced important conversations about San Francisco’s biggest issues.
