No clear winner in Danish parliamentary election exit polls (PBS NewsHour)

Danes have voted in a parliamentary election Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was forced to call amid the fallout from her government's contentious decision ...

A Parliament-appointed commission in June criticized the Social Democratic government’s handling of the issue. It dealt a devastating blow to Danish mink farmers, even though there was no evidence the mutated virus found among some minks was more dangerous than other strains. That and internal squabbles help explain the collapse of the populist Danish People’s Party, which spearheaded Denmark’s crackdown on immigration two decades ago. “What I feel is important and is a worry to many are the soaring prices, whether it be electricity, bread or gasoline,” said Inge Bjerre Hansen, 82, after casting her vote in Copenhagen. Given his reputation as a strong negotiator, some analysts believe Løkke Rasmussen could even emerge as the prime minister of a coalition government. Officially launched just four months ago, the Moderates got 9% according to the TV2 exit poll, which would put them in the position of kingmaker.

Danish vote paves way for centrist government: exit poll (POLITICO.eu)

Incumbent PM Mette Frederiksen's Social Democrats lose majority, but could lead with support from new Moderate party.

Although Frederiksen’s party will remain the largest in parliament, it has lost popularity in recent months — falling from 48 seats to 42 seats, if the exit poll is confirmed — after a number of scandals rocked her reputation. A leftist party backing Frederiksen’s minority government withdrew its support as a result of the report, forcing Frederiksen to call Tuesday’s early election. It’s only projected to get 2.5 percent of the vote, or 4 seats — just above the parliament’s 2 percent threshold. Some have even suggested he could use his post-election influence to hold out for a senior role or even the prime minister position. An uncharacteristically exciting and chaotic campaign followed, at times seeming to foreshadow the twists and turns of the latest season of the popular TV political drama “Borgen.” An initial survey by public broadcaster DR suggests the Social Democrats secured 23.1 percent of the vote, which would earn them 42 of the 179 seats in parliament.

Mette Frederiksen's party predicted to have about 23% of vote, which could make former PM Løkke Rasmussen kingmaker.

do our outmost to be the bridge, that’s the whole idea behind this,” Rasmussen said after casting his ballot in central Copenhagen. Ellemann-Jensen called for Rasmussen to align with his former colleagues on the right. The result could be the first centrist coalition bridging Denmark’s traditional left-right divide since the 1970s. The opposition “blue bloc” of rightist parties also looked set to fail, returning 73 MPs. What I feel is important and is a worry to many are the soaring prices, whether it be electricity, bread or gasoline, said Inge Bjerre Hansen, 82, after casting her vote in Copenhagen. That and internal squabbles help explain the collapse of the populist Danish People's Party, which spearheaded Denmark's crackdown on immigration two decades ago. Among them are the Denmark Democrats, created in June by former hardline immigration minister Inger Stjberg. Frederiksen was forced to call the vote earlier this month amid the fallout from her government's contentious decision to cull millions of minks as a pandemic response measure. Exit polls suggested they would fall short, but the decisive seat flipped at the very end of the vote count. Therefore, tomorrow I will submit the government's resignation to the queen, said Frederiksen, adding that she would meet with other parties about forming a new government.

Her government has pushed for asylum seekers to be sent to Rwanda instead of having their claims processed in Denmark, a similar scheme to the one pursued by the UK government. Frederiksen’s government has also pushed for the return of some refugees to Syrian territory controlled by Bashar al-Assad’s regime, claiming that the Damascus region is safe, a view heavily contested by asylum groups. The prime minister declared in 2019 that she wanted her country to accept “zero” asylum seekers. Ahead of the vote, Frederiksen has made a pitch to voters that her party is best positioned to lead Danes through a worsening cost-of-living crisis and a tough security environment. The Social Democrats plan to introduce a carbon tax on agriculture, while the small far-right New Right party supports building nuclear power plants, which Denmark has none of. Frederiksen was forced to call an early election in October after an outrage over a highly critical report of her government’s handling of a country-wide mink cull at fur farms at the time of pandemic peak. Earlier, there were suggestions that if neither group won a majority, the recently formed Moderates party — led by two-time former Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen — would tilt the balance and play key role in government formation. “Social democracy had its best election in over 20 years. Frederiksen is due to inform Queen Margrethe of the election results, but instead of carrying on as prime minister she will submit the government’s resignation and ask for a so-called queen’s round or ‘dronningerunde’ to start. Opinion polls had predicted a weak performance by the Social Democrats, but they instead gained two seats compared to the last election, winning 27.5 per cent of the votes. Denmark’s incumbent Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who was leading centre-left bloc, has managed to retain power as her “red bloc” of parties secured the required 90 seats, clinching a one-seat majority, in a nail-biter of an election, and though her Social Democrats party unexpectedly gained two seats and secured its best result in two decades, she is likely to create a broader coalition to form the government.
