How should the combat sports world digest Jake Paul's win over Anderson Silva? We share some post-fight thoughts.
This isn’t the Silva of his prime, though, and it was fairly obvious to me that he knew he had to balance everything if he wanted to make it to the final bell in one piece. Paul is still a novice in boxing, and an argument can be made he’s taking a tougher path than others in the boxing space. If Paul wants his career to be anything more than fights against aging MMA stars who cross over to boxing, though, this can’t go on forever. Of course, Silva was capable of a knockout from beginning to end due to his precision, but his power wasn’t enough to cast fear within Paul, which allowed him to fight a bit more freely. But just like the ugly stretch of losses to close his UFC career, this doesn’t tarnish what Silva has accomplished overall. “The Spider” was as humble as it gets in defeat, even though he couldn’t deliver for the portion of viewers who wanted him to derail Paul. If you’re one of those people, it’s best you stop reading now, because you’re not going to like what’s coming. If you want to claim that Silva agreeing to participate in this boxing match with Paul, then going on to lose, tarnishes his legacy in combat sports – I’m not going to make a big argument otherwise. He came to the post-fight press conference and outright It’s still a bit tough to know how to digest this whole thing from Silva’s side. It’s fine if you want to feel that way, but going to the next step of claiming shadiness around the outcome is something different. There’s no choice but to address this element off the top.
Paul won a unanimous decision against Silva, who had a decorated U.F.C. career but was nearly double Paul's age and had little pro boxing experience.
Paul and Silva pledged before the fight that if Paul won, they would together attempt to unionize U.F.C. And while Silva was technically Paul’s first fight against an opponent with professional boxing experience, it was not against someone who is making a primary career of the sport. “I want to fight big names,” Paul said. There are no plans for a rematch, and Silva said it is somewhat disrespectful to discuss one now. To his credit, the only reason Paul was fighting Silva on Saturday night was because two fights scheduled in August at Madison Square Garden fell apart. Álvarez certainly would aid Paul’s legitimacy, but has seemingly little incentive to fight Paul given the stark gaps on their résumés. The fight moved Paul to 6-0 with three knockouts as a professional boxer, and pushed him more than any other bout in his career. Through the early part of the bout, Silva did not seem to take Paul seriously, dropping his hands and evading punches with ease as Paul furiously tried to make contact. In the final round, Silva blitzed Paul, seemingly realizing his only chance for a win would come with a knockout, but his last-ditch effort proved ineffective. GLENDALE, Ariz — As Jake Paul entered Desert Diamond Arena to deafening boos from the 14,000 fans standing and mostly rooting for his demise, it was clear that this fight would be different from any others in his professional career. As Paul traded punches on Saturday, his white feathered trunks and white left glove stained red with Silva’s blood, Paul’s evolution as a boxer was evident. careers ever, and counted a childhood Paul as a fan.

Paul has dangled the carrot of getting his comeuppance from a series of MMA legends, and in turn has knocked them out and then criticized the MMA industry as a whole. It’s also a decision of sheer necessity, as the Venn Diagram of marketable MMA fighters and ones a commission would sanction against a rapidly improving Paul will one day soon not intersect at all. To use pro wrestling parlance, in doing so, Paul has transformed himself into a babyface for at least some portion of the boxing community, and a heel to a portion of the MMA crowd. It is no doubt true that there are boxers with upside down records, even ones in the single digits, who would be more dangerous than even Anderson Silva to Jake Paul at this point in his career. Which end of that scale he’s closer to at present time can be debated, but he has the resources (namely world-class sparring) and commitment to at least inch closer to the latter. On the official scorecards, which turned out to be 77-74 and 78-73 twice, the punch wasn’t the turning point in the bout.
