Diwali is having a mainstream moment in the US (CNN)

More and more major brands are recognizing the festival of lights, running ad campaigns and stocking products related to the holiday in the US.

And the party supplier [Big Dot of Happiness](https://www.bigdotofhappiness.com/) makes Diwali decorations that she’s bought in years past. Does it matter whether the person or company behind a Diwali product is South Asian or not? “These local chocolate companies are using familiarity in the style of Indian flavors with modern sustainable relevance for the younger South Asian generation,” Navanayagam says. What is the line between celebration and appropriation? New York-based TAGMO Treats, meanwhile, offers Diwali [mithai ](https://tagmonyc.com/shop/diwali-collection)that pays homage to home cooks. “When anything in any culture becomes mainstream, you do run the risk of appropriation,” she says. At 4.6 million people, Indian Americans account for about 21% of that group, [more than doubling](https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/fact-sheet/asian-americans-indians-in-the-u-s/#economic-characteristics-of-u-s-indian-population-2019) in population from 2000 to 2019. [Diwali Celebration Box](https://www.malai.co/ice-cream-desserts/diwali-celebration-box) in 2019. For a really long time there wasn’t even that acknowledgment,” she adds. The items in the collection – which in past years have included gulab jamun ice cream cake and [Parle-G](https://www.michigandaily.com/michigan-in-color/the-power-of-parle-g/) masala chai ice cream sandwiches – cater to a new generation of Indian Americans who are looking for an updated twist on familiar flavors, Bavishi says. Diwali, then, presents a significant commercial opportunity for businesses, given that it’s tradition to give gifts, ignite firecrackers and feast with friends and family. Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is one of the most important festivals in Hinduism.

Soan Papdi: The Simple Indian Sweet That's Everywhere During ... (Tasting Table)

Soan papdi is a traditional Indian dessert closely related to the Turkish sweet pişmaniye. But here's why this treat is found everywhere during Diwali.

It seems like the sweet is treated much like [fruitcake](https://www.tastingtable.com/685994/best-candied-fruitcake-recipe/) during Christmas, where it is traditionally gifted, but it is more likely to be re-gifted and passed from one gift-giver to another (via [Holiday Insights](https://www.holidayinsights.com/xmas/fruitcake.htm)). [The Indian Express](https://indianexpress.com/article/lifestyle/food-wine/diwali-soan-papdi-humble-dish-popular-india-8222785/) tells us that this particular dessert is popular during the celebration because it is versatile and has a long shelf life due to all the sugar in it. [karanji](https://www.tastingtable.com/1063705/the-sweet-dumpling-thats-a-must-have-for-diwali-celebrations/), gulab jamun, rasgulla, and coconut burfi, via [Swasthi's Recipes](https://www.indianhealthyrecipes.com/diwali-sweets-recipes-diwali-recipes/), but one Diwali dessert that everyone has to have is soan papdi. The process of making this classic Indian treat begins by gathering gram and all-purpose flour, [ghee (clarified butter)](https://www.tastingtable.com/695532/what-is-ghee-and-how-to-make-it/), sugar, milk, and [cardamom](https://www.tastingtable.com/693650/cardamom-uses-recipes-substitute-taste/). People preparing to celebrate have already taken to the internet to joke around and share in the holiday fun (via [ABC News](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-10-22/when-is-diwali-2022-and-how-is-the-festival-of-lights-celebrated/101563542)). Soan papdi is made much in the same way, says [Awesome Cuisine](https://www.awesomecuisine.com/recipes/312/soan-papdi/), though pişmaniye traditionally has a strong nutty flavor, whereas the Indian treat is lighter. [National Geographic](https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/pages/article/diwali) describes Diwali, or Dipawali, as a festival of lights that is celebrated throughout India and by Hindu practitioners worldwide for five days straight. [India Times](https://www.indiatimes.com/explainers/trending/explained-how-was-soan-papdi-invented-582782.html) claims that soan papdi is a well-established Diwali dessert with no confirmed origin. [The Food Hog](https://thefoodhog.com/pismaniye-recipe-turkish-cotton-candy/), pişmaniye is made by forming a fine floss out of flour, butter, and sugar. [Times Food](https://recipes.timesofindia.com/us/recipes/soan-papdi/rs55051868.cms) says that while soan papdi can be bought at any old Hindu grocery store, it can also be easily made using some of the most basic ingredients you probably have at home. It is also known as patisa, san papri, or shonpapdi, and while it is super popular in India around the holidays, versions of this sweet are eaten worldwide.

Diwali, the festival of lights explained (Red and Black)

On Monday, Oct. 24, millions of Hindus across the world will celebrate what is for many the largest and most important holiday of the year — Diwali, ...

Regardless of the differences in how Diwali is celebrated, its essence lies in the lessons told from these stories — good over evil and light over darkness. In southern India, Diwali celebrates the day that Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, defeated the demon Narakasura. However, most stories from western India are related to Lord Vishnu, the Hindu deity of creation, protection and transformation, who has 10 primary avatars, or forms. The fifth and final day is Bhau-Beej, also called Bhai Dooj. Rangolis, which are colorful designs made of sand, will adorn the floor and entryways to the house. Diwali gets its name from the Sanskrit word, Deepavali, which means “row of lights.” Diwali is not limited to Hindus, as Sikhs, Jains and Newar Buddhists also have their own celebrations.

Chefs Meherwan Irani, Palak Patel, and Archna Becker share the foods significant to their Diwali feasts.

For Becker, most of their family celebrations and observances happen in and around the home. [Ambaji Shree Shakti Mandir of Atlanta](https://www.ambajiusa.org/events/diwali-2022/) in Lake City offers an Annakut for public viewing on Govardhan Pooja, along with other events with food throughout the year. As she notes in her streaming series, [The Diwali Menu on Food Network](https://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/the-diwali-menu), she looks forward to special treats like pooris and katchori that her mother still makes for the holidays, and coordinating family visits to celebrate the festive season together. Firecrackers are let off all evening, and our guests are all sent home with a goodie bag of homemade sweets.” Other treats include preparations of rice and sugar either as kheer (a rice pudding with sugar) or puffed rice balls made with jaggery. [Chai Pani](https://www.chaipani.com/decatur) in Asheville and Decatur, grew up in a blended household. The celebrations also extend to other parts of the home, including purchasing new kitchen utensils to usher a bountiful and healthy kitchen. Lanterns are hung to symbolically invite all things good and thus mark the beginning of Diwali. As the festival occurs in the fall, dark nights are brightened with strings of lights, oil lamps, and votives. While the main day of Diwali is observed on a moonless night, according to a traditional lunar calendar, South Asian celebrations are spread out over two to three days prior, and may continue up to five days beyond Diwali. Each day of Diwali honors a different aspect or narrative that is important to the family’s traditions. For Hindus celebrating Diwali, it comes forward as the lighting of clay diyas – an event marking an elaborate five-day festival filled with festivities and decadent feasts.

It sounds cliche to say that “you have to see it to be it”; it’s also not entirely true, as many of the trailblazing guests were the first to mark a certain level of achievement in their fields. And here we all were, together, celebrating a holiday and wearing clothes that people may have mocked us for in the past or that made us targets of hate. They then handed out sparklers, the handheld fireworks that are commonly lit on Diwali to symbolize the idea of seeking light in the darkness. But it was beautiful to turn around everywhere and see South Asians of all ages meeting and greeting each other, congratulating each other on their latest personal or professional accomplishments, and the young dancers taking it all in — all of us, quite literally, seeing it. To many of us, one of the seemingly small but standout moments of Bridgerton season 2 is when Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) oils her sister Edwina’s (Charithra Chandran) hair: a tradition many of us grew up with, one that brings us immense comfort, and also one that caused others to mock us. She wrote on her Instagram that she realized “each one of the guests at the party did have something in common: we were all self-made. After all, Harris is a heartbeat away from the presidency, the right-hand woman to one of the most influential leaders in the world — and a powerful figure in her own right. (The event was off the record, but I’m writing this with permission from her office.) She spoke of her memories celebrating Diwali in India as a child, and the universal relevance of what the holiday stands for: light over darkness, and enlightenment over ignorance. … It wasn’t our pedigree, but rather the degree of effort we worked on our goals, that unites us. But the fact of it happening on one of our most important holidays — the holiday that is all about the triumph of good over evil, of light over dark — was something I couldn’t (and still don’t) understand. These are all people I have watched work for years and years to get to positions of power and influence, and I know for a fact it wasn’t always easy (if it ever was). The values we hold, the policies we enact or support, the intersectionality of true justice: these are all things that matter just as much, if not more, than the identity of any one person in any one position.
