Rishi Sunak, the ex-chancellor who lost his bid for leadership against Liz Truss just last month, said he'll stand in the contest to replace her.

Johnson and Sunak met last night amid speculation of a deal between the two, despite the bitterness left by Sunak’s role in Johnson’s downfall as prime minister. Neither Sunak nor Mordaunt have laid out a policy program for government and it is not clear that any candidate will do so before the race concludes, which will be either by Monday evening or, if put to an online vote with the wider Tory party, by Friday. The only other candidate so far is Leader of the Commons, Penny Mordaunt. Liz Truss’s resignation on Thursday triggered a leadership contest that will make her the shortest-ruling prime minister in British history when she exits this week. His supporters claim he has more than the required 100 backers but only about half that number have publicly declared. Investors are likely to sell the pound and gilts in the event of a Johnson or Mordaunt victory, while a Sunak coronation would probably support UK assets for a while.

Britain's Conservative Party is once again picking its next leader who will become the next U.K. prime minister after Liz Truss resigned.

Nadhim Zahawi, a former top minister in Johnson’s government, tweeted, “A day is a long time in politics …” Indeed, it was. As Tory lawmakers ready themselves for a vote on Monday, over who runs their party and therefore who runs Britain, the surrogates for Johnson and his chief rival, the former finance minister Sunak, were duking it out on the morning talk shows, the gossipy Westminster WhatsApp groups and rounds of phone-calling and arm-twisting. Contender Penny Mordaunt, who missed out on the last contest’s run-off by just eight votes, is now under pressure to concede rather than force the contest to a vote of members. She did not reveal anything about where her own bid stands, but this may signal that she is planning to get the backing of MPs who declared their support for Johnson: Angela Rayner, the deputy leader, said: “The Tories are about to hand the keys of the country to Rishi Sunak without him saying a single word about how he would govern. Rishi Sunak ahead of Penny Mordaunt as PM race enters final hours (BBC News)

Rishi Sunak has emerged as the frontrunner in the race to become the UK's next prime minister, after Boris Johnson announced he was not standing.

She will become the shortest-serving prime minister in British history when she stands down. Candidates need the support of at least 100 Tory MPs to progress to the next stage. If two candidates remain and no-one withdraws, Tory party members will make the final decision in an online vote, with the winner declared by Friday "No one voted for this. Off to bed!" Essex MP James Duddridge, who gave the first indication that Mr Johnson was intending to run in the Tory leadership race, simply tweeted: "Well that was unexpected.

Johnson and Sunak met last night amid speculation of a deal between the two, despite the bitterness left by Sunak’s role in Johnson’s downfall as prime minister. There was no apparent outcome from those discussions and no mention of Johnson in Sunak’s announcement. Whoever wins will face the task of trying to bring unity to a party that has been through months of upheaval and bruising public infighting. The race will conclude either by Monday evening or, if put to an online vote with the wider Tory party membership, by Friday. “We need to provide leadership, stability and confidence to the British people.” But his public endorsements were only about half that, and throughout Sunday it was clear that the big Tory names increasingly were backing Sunak.
