FIA Thursday press conference - 2022 United States Grand Prix ... (Formula 1)

DRIVER GROUP 1: Valtteri BOTTAS (Alfa Romeo), Lando NORRIS (McLaren), Carlos SAINZ (Ferrari), Lance STROLL (Aston Martin), Sergio PÉREZ (Red Bull).

So I think we need to be doing more, and with the organisation, with Formula 1 and Liberty doing so well it’s not a lot for them to be able to help out in that space. Yes, the one that gets to sit in the car is a part of bringing the attraction, and obviously putting the finishing touches to the amazing creation of all the people that you get to work with, but I think it's silly putting numbers on it, because it's irrelevant. I'm noticing so many people having the same experiences that I'm having and messages I get and the messages I give… So I think it's that, and because of that, there's a real general hunger within the team. I think he's tried the 2021 car before, so for sure it's going to be a bit of a surprise to suddenly jump into the 2022 because they are quite a bit different. And I think it's something that is very hard to get, you know, to be able to drive at your 100% without making mistakes is the thing that makes him so special at the moment. And yeah, I just hope that if there's a penalty the penalty is relatively important to take the appetite away from overspending 2 or 3 million to waste on next year's car because you think next year's car is worth it more than the other year, and then you take a penalty for ignoring it. Yeah, I mean, it's been a tremendous year for Red Bull and I really hope we are able to finish it on a high, because it's been tremendous, the year we've been able to have. Lately obviously I got a lot of more up to speed and I'm driving a lot better the car, but also it's true that the car is not maybe at the level that it was at the beginning of the year, or let's say Red Bull has stepped it up and it's not as easy to score a pole position or a win as it might have been at the beginning of the year, no. So yeah, a lot of a lot of activities, a lot of good things and then the track itself is for me one of the coolest, most fun in a way, and has provided some good racing and some fun races in the past. And, you know, the last couple of races in Asia we scored a lot of points and we jumped a few positions in the Constructors’ and that's a really, really good thing. And I think, for us, it's important to try and win, to get the podiums, to get the consistency.

Alfa Romeo's [Valtteri Bottas](https://www.rotowire.com/racing/player/valtteri-bottas-640) is a former COTA winner. With two great drivers behind the wheel, the team is gunning to win a race before the season ends, and [Lewis Hamilton](https://www.rotowire.com/racing/player/lewis-hamilton-518) has been one of the best at this particular track. [Kevin Magnussen](https://www.rotowire.com/racing/player/kevin-magnussen-660) tends to be the more rewarding choice among the teammates and has an average finish of 13.7. [Lando Norris](https://www.rotowire.com/racing/player/lando-norris-912) should also make a case for inclusion in fantasy rosters this week. [Sergio Perez](https://www.rotowire.com/racing/player/sergio-perez-603) is offering a significantly greater return for winning this weekend's United States Grand Prix. Throughout the season Hamilton has proven his ability to gain speed with the car's upgrades, and fantasy players may want to gamble on him doing the same this week at a track that has been kind to him in the past. It has been a dominant season for Verstappen and his Red Bull Racing team with 12 wins so far and another two from [Sergio Perez](https://www.rotowire.com/racing/player/sergio-perez-603). A runner-up finish on track from [Charles Leclerc](https://www.rotowire.com/racing/player/charles-leclerc-970) initially kept Verstappen from wrapping up the driver's title, but a subsequent time penalty to Leclerc for leaving the track and gaining an advantage dropped him to third. Seven minutes into the session, Giovinazzi’s Haas swapped ends and he hit the barriers outside Turn 6 with the right-hand side of his car, bringing out a brief red flag. Ferrari driver Sainz set the fastest time of 1m 36.857s with Red Bull’s champion Verstappen jumping to second late on, 0.224s off the Spaniard’s pace. The Italian driver managed to get his car going again and limp back to the pits – but a damaged clutch left him last on the timesheets and out of the session. Five drivers were substituted in for FP1 as per the 2022 regulations: Robert Shwartzman in place of Charles Leclerc at Ferrari; Alex Palou in place of Daniel Ricciardo at McLaren; Logan Sargeant in place of Nicholas Latifi at Williams; Theo Pourchaire in place of Valtteri Bottas at Alfa Romeo; and Antonio Giovinazzi returning to the wheel in place of Kevin Magnussen at Haas. Rookies impress in crucial practice; Ferrari reserve butchers final F1 ... (Fox Sports)

Rookies impress in crucial practice; Ferrari reserve butchers final F1 chance: Friday talking points.

“Unfortunately it stuck in the barriers there and then I burned the clutch trying to go out and the session was over. “In all honesty, the best thing I can do is take in as much information and knowledge that I possibly can and use that to my advantage hopefully going forward,” he told America’s SpeedCity Broadcasting. He’s not currently in the frame for a seat but is considered an interesting proposition given his American notoriety combined with European junior single-seater experience. Zhou Guanyu was subsequently re-signed at Alfa Romeo for another season, with Pourchaire recently announced as the team’s official reserve as he embarks on a make-or-break third F2 campaign in 2023. If the new compounds get the tick of approval, they’ll hopefully lead to an improvement in racing next season. But it also gets only extremely limited access to current Formula 1 cars to test and develop its tyres, a problem exacerbated by this being the first season of new regulations. The program is controlled completely by Pirelli right down to fuel loads and stint length. In fact the sheet number of back-to-back and triple-header rounds means a Monday can’t even be tacked onto most rounds. Mercedes is the ballpark, but it’s a massive question mark whether his upgraded W13 will be able to keep up with the two leaders on Saturday. Green Day is performing on Friday night and Ed Sheeran on Saturday night. The Ferrari reserve driver, in his second session with Haas as a favour to the Scuderia, crashed his car after just four laps, and though he was able to limp back to the pits, he took no further part in the session thanks to a burnt-out clutch. It’s a substantial difference.

US GP's F1 2023 tyre test practice session explained - The Race (The Race)

Second practice for the United States Grand Prix at Austin was a bit of an anomaly - devoted almost entirely to trying Formula 1's 2023 tyres.

This includes an attempt to increase the grip level of the hardest C1 compound so it’s closer in performance to the C2. AlphaTauri-Red Bull The 2023 tyres are designed to reduce the understeer balance that emerged in this year’s low-profile tyres on 18-inch wheelrims. Red Bull That session was rescheduled for Mexico City next weekend, making Austin the first test. The grip of the C3 compound is also being tweaked to sit more evenly between the C2 and C4 in terms of performance given it’s currently more towards the soft end of the spectrum. Bottas’s Alfa Romeo and Ricciardo’s McLaren were second and third, with practice one pacesetter Carlos Sainz the fastest of those to only set a time on 2023 prototype tyres in fourth, 1.4s off Leclerc. Pirelli dictated the runplans of all the teams in Austin FP2 to ensure it gathers the required data, with the teams testing ‘blind’ and not knowing exactly what compounds they were running. The compounds have also been tweaked with the objective to modify the characteristics. This is the first time there has been what is effectively a group test of the 2023 Pirelli rubber.
