Netflix responded to the furore on Monday, with a spokesperson saying in a statement: “The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events.” “Neither Sir John nor Dame Norma have discussed the Monarchy remotely in the terms you suggest in your email,” the spokesman said, adding: “What you report as depicted in the script has never been their view, never would be their view, and never will be their view.” “There was never any discussion between Sir John and the then Prince of Wales about any possible abdication of the late Queen Elizabeth II – nor was such an improbable and improper subject ever raised by the then Prince of Wales (or Sir John),” he added. A statement on behalf of the former prime minister sent to CNN on Monday described such scenes as “a barrel-load of nonsense peddled for no other reason than to provide maximum – and entirely false – dramatic impact.”

“Rattled” Netflix Delays Harry And Meghan Documentary Until 2023 ... (Deadline)

Netflix has decided to postpone its documentary series featuring Harry and Meghan until next year.

Netflix has stipulated that the crash-impact scenes will not be shown. It may well suit the Duke and Duchess to have the documentary delayed while they reconsider its content. The drama features scenes of Charles (Dominic West) privately agreeing with a passage in the Sunday Times, from back in 1991, that ”an ageing monarch, too long on the throne whose remoteness from the modern world has led people to grow tired not just of her but of the monarchy itself.” The untitled documentary series produced by Netflix and Archewell Productions did not set an official broadcast date. The Crown: Netflix defends show after Sir John Major criticism (BBC News)

Former PM Sir John Major had described upcoming scenes in the royals series as 'malicious nonsense'.

It was also halted on the day of her funeral. But it's loosely based on the truth. Of course, it's not strictly accurate, of course not, but loosely it gives you a rough idea about what that lifestyle, the pressures of putting duty and service above family and everything else, what can come from that." The Crown Backlash Leads Netflix to Delay Harry & Meghan ... (Screen Rant)

After facing criticism over controversial storyline in The Crown, Netflix executives have decided to delay the Harry & Meghan documentary.

The criticism that the show was hit with this past weekend is due to a controversial storyline in the first episode of season 5, in which Prince Charles — now King Charles III — has a conversation with former UK Prime Minister John Major where the prince supposedly complains about having to wait too long to be king. However, now that the show has reached a point in history where they are telling stories about people who are still alive and well, it is understandable how that might affect the public's opinion about the real Royal Family. Deadline reports that the streaming service has decided to postpone the Harry and Meghan docuseries that would follow the lives of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which was unofficially slated to premiere in December, following the release of The Crown. It seems that both the Buckingham Palace and Netflix have been extra sensitive about The Crown after the monarch's death on September 8, which makes the streaming executives' decision to postpone the docuseries a sensible one. Now in its fifth season, The Crown has reached the point in royal history that follows the events that ultimately led to Princess Diana's untimely death in 1997. The streaming giant serves as the platform to release the content created by Archewell Productions, such as docuseries The Heart of Invictus released in 2020.

And with so much criticism falling on one of their prestige shows before it is even released, it is no surprise the streamer would want to push the documentary to avoid further criticism. We’ll have to wait and see! The former prime minister has since come forward to claim that no such conversation ever took place, calling it out as “malicious nonsense.” The episode title references Queen Victoria, who sat on the throne for 63 years before Edward VII could inherit the throne.

"The Crown" rejected the criticism, insisting that the series "has always been presented as a drama based on historical events". Netflix Postpones Alleged Markle Docuseries Amid Royal Backlash ... (IndieWire)

Following concerns over Season 5 of "The Crown," Netflix reportedly delayed the release of a Prince Harry documentary.

A scene includes Dominic West as Prince Charles agreeing with the poll and saying “an aging monarch, too long on the throne whose remoteness from the modern world has led people to grow tired not just of her but of the monarchy itself” should step aside. Deadline also noted that the delay in the docuseries premiere could have been influenced by the Queen’s death September 8. A particular Season 5 episode titled “Queen Victoria Syndrome” has recently received pushback from former UK Prime Minister John Major. Yet Deadline reported the series was filmed at Harry and Meghan’s Montecito home, with both serving as executive producers through their production company Archewell and under their Netflix banner deal. Netflix has stated that “there’s never been any documentary from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed” on the streamer.
