During a separate incident at Balthazar in October, the comedian began “yelling like crazy” after finding traces of egg white in his wife Julia Carey’s “egg yolk omelette with gruyere cheese,” McNally claims. “You can’t do your job,” Corden allegedly yelled at staff during the October incident. “James Corden is a Hugely [sic] gifted comedian, but a tiny Cretin [sic] of a man,” McNally shared in the post.
For a second there, it almost looked as if the country were turning on its most confounding late-night host.
“That’s when James Corden began yelling like crazy to the server: ‘You can’t do your job! He writes, “Anyone magnanimous enough to apologize to a deadbeat layabout like me (and my staff) doesn’t deserve to be banned from anywhere. [which presumably is why he’s so into posting about Woody Allen, Ghislaine Maxwell, and Jeffrey Epstein](https://www.insider.com/restaurateur-keith-mcnally-ghislaine-maxwell-instagram-controversy-2021-5). During one visit, Corden’s wife “ordered an egg yolk omelet with gruyere cheese and salad.” Shortly after the food arrived, Corden called the server to tell her that “there was a little bit of egg white mixed with the egg yolk.” When the kitchen remade the dish, they accidentally sent it with home fries instead of salad. Thankfully, he apologized to Balthazar owner Keith McNally for allegedly being “a hugely gifted comedian, but a tiny cretin of a man” and is now welcome back with open arms. This way, I [won’t] write any nasty reviews on Yelp or anything like that.” It’s hard to imagine James Corden taking a break from singing in cars with celebrities to write a Yelp review, but the threat is enough.
The owner of NYC restaurant Balthazar called James out for his “abusive” and “extremely nasty” behavior in a brutal Instagram post on Monday.

James Corden was banned, then unbanned, from Keith McNally's Balthazar after throwing a tantrum and returning an all-egg-yolk omelet to the kitchen.
If I were to make one again, I’d try beating in some milk instead of the cream, though I’m not sure that would make a huge difference. Our condolences to the Balthazar line cooks, who probably had to make 50 of these this morning and will be forced to separate eggs by the gross this winter, serving every influencer who visits town. Mine’s a little rough, but the result is pretty anyway, because the yolks make it bright yellow. So one spoonful of albumen went into the pan afterward, on its own, and I carefully placed it atop the omelet, creating a Corden-infuriating all-protein garnish. But wait: I had to Cordenize this, and that meant incorporating the detail that set Mr. (The few internet recipes out there suggest that it is more crepe than omelet.) I didn’t have any Gruyère in the house, but I do have a chive plant growing on the windowsill, so this was going to be a variation on a classic: omelette aux fines herbes à la Corden pique. The internet ate this up, taking it as confirmation that (a) James Corden is an ass, [as previously rumored](https://www.reddit.com/r/awfuleverything/comments/rm8dwy/james_cordon_on_an_airplane/), and (b) [Keith McNally’s Instagram captions](https://www.instagram.com/keithmcnallynyc/) are the best free entertainment in town. It was not frothy and liquid, as beaten whole eggs are; it was a thick goo. A couple of us wondered whether it had been a mistake in McNally’s information from his manager, that someone had intended to write “white” and instead wrote “yolk.” That made some sense: Far be it from me to question anyone’s breakfast choices, but Maybe (and the Cordenian tantrum here would bear this out) she is viscerally repulsed by the slightest hint of egg white. The classic rolled French omelet requires a hot pan, butter, and a bit of technique that I have not exactly mastered but can carry off well enough. And so I tried a trick I learned about from the Balthazar staff’s handling of the situation. The first thing I noticed is that even the five yolks and splash of milk I’d ended up using weren’t enough to coat the entire bottom of the eight-inch pan I was using without it getting so thin as to become a mere crepe. I imagined I was a chef, preparing the dish for a demanding customer who might be ready to humiliate me with a returned plate. I sprinkled it with cheddar and opted, as Becky had counseled, for a single-fold presentation. [Balthazar’s brunch menu](https://balthazarny.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Brunch-08-15-22.pdf) to identify the item in question: It was probably the “omelette with fines herbs and Gruyere or cheddar cheese” under the “Les oeufs et classiques” section. My approximation of Carey’s omelet proved to have a good, eggy profile. “It’s also probably going to be suuuper tender because of all the fat, so this may be more of a fold-in-half than roll situation.” But a bit player in the controversy was the thing that most fascinated us here at Voraciously: In one anecdote from McNally, Corden’s alleged abusive treatment of the Balthazar team came after his wife, Julia Carey, ordered an all-yolk omelet whose imperfect preparation (apparently there was a small amount of egg white in the dish) caused Corden to send it back to the kitchen. Seeking answers to at least some of these mysteries, I decided to try to make one. But an all-yolk omelet is far less common — none of my colleagues had even heard of such a thing. The restaurant remade it but sent it back out with home fries instead of the salad she had ordered, allegedly prompting Corden to erupt. "You definitely want to either write a letter to management take it up with management in person, or you can always leave a negative review online. The manager may also do something for you, but it's not guaranteed. And you can always show your appreciation by increasing a tip or show your dissatisfaction by leaving a lesser tip. What to expect: When dealing with this herself, Whitmore has had a dessert comped for the mistake. But you should never expect anything, she says. Sometimes, Whitmore says, the manager will get involved if the server can't help. But what's the best way to rectify the situation? We're outraged by James Corden's hypocrisy and cheer when Anne Hathaway reminds us of our own. Is this what authenticity looks like?
No one expects Sudeikis, Corden or any celebrity to be as amiable and generous as they appear when hosting a television show or accepting an Emmy (and few of us are kind while in the middle of a contentious breakup). Too often referred to as “cancel culture” (for the record, Hathaway continued to work, and Corden will remain star of “The Late Late Show” until his previously announced 2023 departure date), a new social-media-fueled vigilance, sometimes just and sometimes petty, has zeroed in on gaps between public personas and private actions. But abusing wait staff and nannies, or any other of the many service employees who cater to the better off, is not a good look for anyone; for Mr. If we’re going to be outraged when those images are proved sincere, like Hathaway’s, and hypocritical, like Corden’s, the problem isn’t with them — it’s with us. A whole subset of reality television rose on the “entertainment value” of people verbally (and sometimes physically) abusing each other. Like the terrible revelations of [the Britney Spears case](https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/tv/story/2021-02-05/framing-britney-spears-free-britney-fx-the-weekly), Hathaway’s experience seems a bit distant, but 10 years do not make their stories less relevant. The tantrum-throwing-mogul model that allowed the rise of predators like Harvey Weinstein and Randall Emmett and bullies like Scott Rudin is being dismantled one revelatory story and social media post at a time. Yet even as “Ted Lasso” marked the return of a kinder, gentler comedy, its star was embroiled in an ugly breakup. Corden’s nice-guy act, especially as a chaser to No matter how one feels about “Les Miz,” or even Hathaway’s performance in it, the vitriol she faced for working hard and being happy in her chosen profession is both unpardonable and symptomatic of a greater problem.
