Polestar has made further commitments to environmental production, claiming that it will eventually build the [world’s first truly zero-emissions vehicle](https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/7/22370302/polestar-carbon-neutral-electric-car-no-offsets) without relying on carbon offsets, which it described as a “cop-out.” Aside from a few touchpoints on the steering wheel, the Polestar 3 is the latest vehicle to basically bid farewell to the physical button. [Quality also remains a challenge](https://www.theverge.com/2022/6/29/23188085/art-club) for the relatively new company. By mid-2024, the Polestar 3 will begin rolling off the line at Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina, facility, with customer deliveries soon to follow. Adaptive dual-chamber air suspension and active dampers will come standard, allowing the Polestar 3 to switch between comfort and firm suspension dynamics while adjusting to the road conditions once every two milliseconds. A decoupling function is also available for the rear electric motor, allowing the car to run only on the front electric motor to save energy under certain circumstances. And on top of all that, the Polestar 3 will continue to operate with Google’s native Android Automotive, which includes voice-activated Google Assistant and other useful features. And over-the-air updates will ensure the Polestar 3 is always running on the latest version of the company’s software. Demand for electric vehicles has never been higher, and the Polestar 3 will have its work cut out for it in order to stand out in a crowded market. All of those features will be accessible on the Polestar 3’s portrait-style 14.5-inch center touchscreen. Volvo, which jointly owns Polestar along with its parent company Geely, has said that it will roll out a hands-free highway driving feature as part of its next big platform update, the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2), which will arrive with the next-generation EX90 SUV. (Recall this is the brand that paid millions of dollars for an austere Super Bowl ad that promised “no epic voiceovers” and “no greenwashing.”)
Polestar's first foray into the world of SUVs is a sporty electric crossover that starts at $85300 and claims to offer 300 miles of range.
The 2024 Polestar 3 Long Range Dual Motor will start at $85,300, with the Pilot pack and Plus pack included and the Performance pack running an extra $6000. Starting in the middle of 2024, Polestar 3s meant for the North American market will originate in Volvo’s Ridgeville, South Carolina factory. The Pilot pack brings a heads-up display, parking assist, and Polestar’s Pilot Assist system that helps control acceleration, braking, steering up to 80 mph. The standard 3 wears Michelin Pilot Sport 4 EV rubber. The 3 is also set up for bidirectional charging, where the vehicle can return power to the grid. The dual-motor setup means standard all-wheel-drive, and Polestar says the system has a rear bias. While it’s slightly shorter than a Porsche Cayenne at 193 inches, the 117.5-inch wheelbase is 3.5 inches longer than that of the Cayenne. The Polestar 3 will ride on 21-inch wheels. Those impressive figures require the Performance package, but even the standard dual-motor 3 has a stout 489 hp and 620 pound-feet. Adjustable one-pedal driving is enabled by regenerative braking, and the 3 can also disconnect the rear motor to save battery power. The Polestar 3 combines performance, technology, and class-leading range. Does it have what it takes to challenge the electric SUV market?
The Polestar 3 is not for the masses, though. The Polestar 2 was a very credible first all-electric car from the brand, although it can’t quite surpass the Tesla Model 3 in key areas of range and performance. The Polestar 5 will add a larger sedan to the range, and the Polestar 6 roadster could be one of the most desirable EVs yet. One of the more significant features of the Polestar 3 won’t be so immediately obvious, however. The Model Y has it beat in this respect. The Polestar 2 was the first to have Google software built in, although now others have followed suit, such as the recently launched The active dampers run at 500Hz, so can be adjusted every two milliseconds in reaction to driving conditions. The basic Long range Dual motor version has a potent 489hp and can hit 62mph in 5 seconds, but add the £5,600 ($6,100) Performance Pack and the power increases to 517hp, with a 4.7-second 62mph sprint. There are even interior cameras able to detect when the driver is drowsy or inattentive. This isn’t a unique development – Tesla has taken this approach for years – but it’s an important way to streamline car functionality for cost, efficiency, and easy software-based upgrade. My one gripe with the Polestar 3's exterior is that seeing out of that greenhouse and past the thick C-pillar looks to be an exercise in futility. Inside, the Polestar 3 is really just about the display — a 14.5-inch, touch-sensitive tablet affixed to the dashboard, floating incongruously above a minimalist, barren ground. All of this is wrapped in a frame that looks nice, if unremarkable — the way all Volvos and Polestars have in recent years. And that’s the Polestar 3. The standard dual-motor Polestar 3 offers 482 horsepower and 619 lb-ft of torque. The The SUV’s many external sensors will send their inputs to an Nvidia Drive system-on-chip to crunch numbers, for semi-autonomous driving. That last bit means the car comes with a lot of sensors: five radar modules, five external cameras, twelve external ultrasonic sensors, and two driver monitoring cameras with eye tracking, coupled with interior radar sensors that can detect "sub-milimetre movements." While the clinical design, attention to details, and Polestar's commitment to sustainability will surely draw in some customers, the most interesting aspect of Polestar 3 is the tech. In terms of size, the Polestar 3 is actually quite big for a mid-size SUV, with a 193-inch length, 64-inch height, and 83.5-inch width. Another key metric for any electric car is range, and Polestar 3 fares quite well here, at least according to preliminary figures from the manufacturer. That's not to say the Polestar 3 is slow: In standard dual-motor configuration, it produces a total of 360kW of power and can take you from 0-60mph in 4.9 seconds, with a top speed of 210 km/h. Look closer, and you'll see small text signs in some places, such as the "SmartZone/Sensor cluster" sign next to the front camera.

The Polestar 3 is intended to take on the Porsche Cayenne. Is it good enough to meet that challenge? Opinions vary on that.
The fact that the car will eventually be manufactured in the United States is nice too — although, it is unlikely to qualify for any federal tax incentives, which limit the sale price of eligible SUVs to $80,000. The Polestar 3 is a big part of that plan, and yet, sitting around the executive sauna at CleanTechnica’s intergalactic headquarters, there were some who felt the Polestar 3 was a tad underwhelming. The Polestar 3 will be available to order in the second quarter of 2023. That package will add $6,600 to the price of of the car and will be included in the launch edition cars. The Polestar 3 is not an entry level electric SUV by any stretch of the imagination, so what is it exactly? “Our goal was to offer the performance and precision that define all Polestar cars, without compromising the comfort of the daily drive,” says Joakim Rydholm, Polestar’s chief chassis engineer.
