Chainsaw Man Is a Bloody, Somber Story of a Boy and His Dog (Gizmodo)

MAPPA's adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto's action shonen is revving up to be something fun.

Because the rest of the show is in 2D, a CG Chainsaw Man that’s also operating on a different framerate from the rest of the 2D world looks out of place, particularly when he’s in minimal motion. After determining that he’s a human/Devil hybrid, Makima gives him the choice to join her in hunting other Devils or die, and he easily accepts. After initial bits of stumbling as he gets used to the extra weight that comes with his new form, Denji starts moving around the battlefield like a bloody force of nature. Whatever MAPPA does with the debut season of their first series, Chainsaw Man’s already carved out an impressive, bloody niche for itself. He’s a good boy, yes, but the show doesn’t go out of its way to make him anything more than a dog that just happens to have a chainsaw for a face. It’s a shame, then, that the CG used to bring Chainsaw Man to life (and used earlier throughout the episode) can sometimes feel out of place. But in the same way that the show is blunt when it comes to its protagonist’s debt, Chainsaw Man doesn’t try too hard in regards to Pochita. Chainsaw Man starts out with a slower, almost melancholic mood rather than the often playful (but no less melancholic) vibes that Jujutsu has successfully operated with over the course of a You’ll find the call quality is enhanced as the four built-in microphones are used to suppress any ambient noise and amplify your voice those on your call only hear what you intend for them to hear. Aided by a dog-Devil with a chainsaw on his head named Pochita, the two have spent years gradually chipping away at Denji’s debt while the teen continues to live in poverty and long for a better life. Colors are muted for much of the episode’s runtime, as if to mirror Denji’s exhaustion and hopelessness, but they bloom towards the end during two key conversations between him and Pochita. [recently returned](https://gizmodo.com/chainsaw-man-manga-returns-shonen-jump-denji-pochita-1849170231) manga of the same name by Tatsuki Fujimoto, Chainsaw Man is set in a world where monstrous beings called Devils exist on Earth, and Devil Hunters are tasked with eliminating them.

Best Chainsaw Man anime fights (Polygon)

We break down the climactic fight scene in the first episode of Chainsaw Man, the new supernatural horror action anime from studio MAPPA based on Tatsuki ...

One of the standout shots of the entire fight, and one which can be briefly glimpsed in the third trailer for the series, is when the Zombie Devil, in a fit of pain-induced desperation, grabs Chainsaw Man with one of his entrail tentacles to fling him across the room and smash into a nearby concert support beam. It’s not until the last third of the episode, after Denji is betrayed by his yakuza employers in exchange for a contract with the so-called Zombie Devil promising power, that we get to see Denji fully cut loose to rip and tear into action. After a momentary pause, Denji wastes no time leaping into action, darting past the Zombie Devil’s defensive line of droning masses and propelling himself forward to pierce the Devil’s skull with his head-mounted chainsaw and arm blades. From start to finish, the climax of Chainsaw Man’s debut episode is an exemplary feat of craftsmanship made possible only through solid production and careful planning that enables these artists and animators to do what they do best — make dope shit. From Hiroyuki Okiura and Mitsuo Iso’s work on the blistering shootout between Motoko Kusanagi and the spider-tank in The exact origin of Devils is unknown, though what is known is that these monsters are manifestations of negative feelings and emotions shared across the collective human subconscious, similar to the phenomenon of “Curses” in Jujutsu Kaisen.

'Chainsaw Man' Could Be the Next 'Attack on Titan' (The Ringer)

The hype surrounding the new series is real, and the culmination of a long effort to popularize anime and manga in the U.S..

The acquisition of the Chainsaw Man anime is a coup for MAPPA and Crunchyroll. The anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man arrives not long after the manga series returned from hiatus and began its second story arc. Chainsaw Man is the culmination of a long effort to popularize anime and manga in the U.S. Nine years ago, Crunchyroll and Hulu premiered Attack on Titan in the U.S., and that turned out to be the biggest anime series of the past decade. The series premiere is a panel-for-panel adaptation of the first chapter of the manga. The yakuza forge a new partnership with a devil and leave Denji for dead in a dumpster at the scene of a massive ambush. Netflix licenses and produces a lot of popular anime, and its high-profile launches in recent years led many fans to assume Chainsaw Man would premiere on Netflix in the U.S. The first episode of Chainsaw Man, as in the first chapter of the manga, follows a scruffy young man named Denji as he wanders the countryside with his strange puppy, Pochita, a “dog” that’s really a devil with a chain saw protruding from his forehead, and a pull cord for a tail. In the meantime, Denji and Pochita chop trees, hunt other devils—who have migrated to Earth using the power of human fears—and sell Denji’s expendable organs to make a living. Now, Denji and Pochita live together in a darkened shack, subsisting on scraps of white bread; Denji dreams of the day they’ll afford to eat bread with jam. The Chainsaw Man anime is part of the subculture’s broader success story of the past decade: a resurgence of big-budget action anime (after a drought that began in the last 2000s and ran through the early 2010s) and an explosion in international manga readership. In December 2018, the manga artist Tatsuki Fujimoto published the first chapter of Chainsaw Man, a modern twist on the figurative deal with the devil, in Japan’s Weekly Shonen Jump.

Episode 1 saw the origin story of Chainsaw Man as he is going to be known to the world. Denji is then ultimately betrayed by the Yakuza and chopped to pieces, but through the power of love and friendship, he is able to recover and strike back with the help of his Devil friend, Pochita. The episode will probably be much more lighthearted than the first one, which was quite heavy in nature. The anime will stream from October 11 2022, on Netflix and is expected to run for three months. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Pochita merges with Denji’s dead body and grants him the powers of a chainsaw devil. Unfortunately, he has outlived his usefulness and is murdered by a devil in contract with the Yakuza.

All Movie References in Chainsaw Man Opening (Beebom)

Here's a complete list of all movie references we spotted in the Chainsaw Man Opening, and we will update it weekly with each new episode.

Chainsaw Man doesn’t shy away from gore content, and with this scene in the opening, it seems like the anime even celebrates it. Chainsaw Man opens with the attack of a tomato devil, which opens up the possibility for a direct reference to the Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. The closest replica of such behavior in the real world is shown by the Leucochloridium Parasite, which gets a brief reference in the CSM opening. Each of these holes is cleverly shaped in the initials of the anime series — C, S, and M. If you are an MCU fan, then this movie reference would be the easiest to spot in the Chainsaw Man opening. While most movie references in Chainsaw Man’s opening were direct and complete recreation of the scenes, there were some subtle ones too. Continuing the celebration of classic horror movies, the Chainsaw Man opening scene uses an angel devil to reference Jacob’s Ladder. It seems like the anime creators are true fans of Quentin Tarantino as another one of his hit movies, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, gets a reference in the Chainsaw Man opening. [ fiends and devils in Chainsaw Man](https://beebom.com/chainsaw-man-devils-fiends-devil-hybrids-difference/) here), is a mysterious character in the CSM universe. In the opening, we can see Chainsaw Man fighting another character in the exact same location where Sadako and Kayako fight in the movie. And while this franchise got another movie in 2022, the opening of Chainsaw Man takes inspiration from the classic 1974 film by Tobe Hooper. That’s why the Chainsaw Man opening has a direct movie reference to this evergreen hit.

While some zombies look decent, some of Denji and the others’ movements look jarring and off-putting. She tells Denji that she came to kill the Zombie Devil as she’s a devil hunter who works with Public Safety. Denji attempts to flee with Pochita in his arms, but the zombies stab him to the ground and chop him up. She assumes he’s responsible for the murders, as Denji asks for her to hug him and the woman does so. He brings the corpse to the old man and asks him to hire him as a devil hunter. The Zombie Devil is surprised to see him alive and orders his zombies to eat him. In exchange for Pochita’s heart, he wants Denji to show him his dreams. Denji and Pochita end up in a dumpster, and it appears Denji has passed away. Suddenly, a man stabs Denji and Pochita from behind with a sword. After Pochita bites him, Denji states that Pochita needs to return the favor and help him clear his debt. Denji acknowledges that devil hunting pays the best and prepares to slay the incoming Tomato Devil using Pochita as a chainsaw. The old man drives by, informing Denji that his father hung himself to escape from paying his first month’s installment.

Chainsaw Man Episode 1 Review: Dog & Chainsaw (Den of Geek)

Chainsaw Man is the most violent new anime of the season, but rich lore and a confidence in its mysteries makes for a strong start.

It definitely feels as if these violent battles will be what audiences most talk about in Chainsaw Man, but thankfully that’s not all that the show has to offer. It relishes and glorifies grisly moments that the manga otherwise dwells on with a certain passivity. This premiere hammers in the dark nature of this world, but it’s not completely void of levity and silliness. This is hardly a fresh anime trope, but hopefully Chainsaw Man manages to avoid the same pitfalls that held back these at-one-point similar seinen series. This first episode looks gorgeous, but there’s equally impressive sound design, especially when it comes to the vicious massacre in the final act when Denji’s Chainsaw Man form first reveals itself. This excess can function at the series’ surface level, but it’s also led to a trend where stylized expressions of magic, energy, or even violence can become powerful metaphors for the internal problems that consume us all.
