'Smile' Star Sosie Bacon Explains the Horror's Bleak Ending, Who ... (Variety)

"Smile" star Sosie Bacon explains the horror film's ending, the giant monster and who killed her character's cat Mustache.

Not just the darkness, it’s how much I had to work and how much I had to be in that state. It’s a facial expression that we’re constantly faced with and it’s supposed to be a happy one. I just don’t think she would, because she does everything she can to not hurt anybody. When we lit the house on fire, we actually lit a house on fire. But it was heartbreaking that she ended up passing it to the only person who really cares about her. A lot of times people really try their best and do everything that they can, but they don’t have control over the outcome. As a whole society, we are dealing for the first time with this fear that people are just dangerous, random strangers, because of COVID. It feels like people are surprised at the depth of it, because maybe they were expecting more of a total jump scare thing. I think people are appreciating it for the real, grounded filmmaking. After investigating the string of previous suicides, Rose learns that she’s doomed to kill herself in front of someone else, which will pass along the curse to that person. However, once she’s at Joel’s house and seemingly free from the demon, Rose realizes it’s yet another hallucination and she’s actually still in her childhood home. 1 performance at the top of the charts.

Smile: The Horror Behind Trauma and Guilt (MovieWeb)

Here's how the 2022 film Smile uses trauma to tell a terrifying story about guilt and overcoming past horror.

The third act of the film is a visual representation of the attempt to overcome trauma. Audiences flocked to theaters to see Smile, and we wait in anticipation for what the director has coming next. Rose is a prestigious doctor and is highly respected in her field. Her decisions are rational, and we never have the “don’t go in the dark room” moment during this film. Smiling is used as a mask to cover the trauma behind the characters, and it represents how even though we might be smiling from ear to ear at times, there could be an enormous amount of hurt behind the mask. Of course, Smile is honest about the actual success rate. Rose is plagued with nightmares of that fateful childhood night and when she sees Laura, her patient, kill herself in a brutal way before her eyes, that trauma comes right back to haunt her. [Smile](https://movieweb.com/movie/smile/) is the latest [horror](https://movieweb.com/tag/horror/) film to use metaphors pertaining to the darkest human emotions and experiences. The chain of events continues as Joel is now burdened with this horrifying curse. Rose begins to notice a strange and horrifying pattern in occurrences as well as a mysterious smile on the face of those around her. However, Finn’s depiction of smiles works so well to further the metaphors behind smiling and the film’s curse in the first place. Smiling, as Finn describes, is a sort of mask that flips the welcoming nature of the natural gesture on its head.

'Smile': Horror Flick's Gruesome Ending Explained (Distractify)

You won't be cheesing after seeing 2022's horror movie 'Smile.' Featuring a curse that feeds on trauma, 'Smile' has a bleak ending. Let's explain it.

Despite learning that killing another person in front of a witness could free her of the curse, Rose ultimately decides to face the entity head-on. Smile grossed a whopping $17.6 million at the [box office](https://www.distractify.com/p/billy-eichner-net-worth) during its second weekend. [988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline](https://988lifeline.org/). She manages to light the smiling beast on fire, which in turn sets the rotting house ablaze, before escaping to her Jeep and driving off. She travels to her dilapidated childhood home, hoping to isolate herself and the entity. Soon enough, Joel will endure the unspeakable hallucinations that Laura, Rose, and many others had to face. Drenched in oil, a grinning Rose is forced to light herself on fire before Joel's very eyes. Now that the utterly traumatized Rose has witnessed the wrath of the smile curse, it's only fitting that she starts experiencing haunting visions that mimic the hell Laura described. The patient, Laura (Caitlin Stasey) — who carves a smile-shaped line into her own throat — has been dealing with a trauma of her own. See, when Rose was 10 years old, her mother (Dora Kiss), who suffered from mental illness, overdosed before realizing that she had made a grand mistake. “Smile” only finds horror in its dull story - The Tacoma Ledger (The Ledger)

It seems to follow in the footsteps of “The Ring” (2002), “It Follows” (2014) and “The Babadook” (2014) but doesn’t provide a new take on any of those ideas and themes. It would have benefitted from raising the stakes by being more creative and committed to parts that were meant to be scary, and executed more effective character development. The scene with Rose’s patient smiling caused the audience to laugh, and as time went on, it added nothing to the plot. The cues feel as if the score is trying to tell the audience when they should feel scared, or are simply adding a loud noise to force a scare. The imagery of people smiling is ominously disturbing, but it is underutilized and more perplexing than anything else. After the patient shockingly kills herself while smiling in the session, Rose begins to have the same experiences.

[Terrifier 2](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/terrifier_2), which currently boasts a 90% with critics, grabbed the No. [Barbarian](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/barbarian_2022) continued to quietly turn a profit, earning another $2.3 million and bringing its total to over $36 million. Also doing very well in limited release is Todd Field’s [Tár](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/tar_2022) with awards favorite Cate Blanchett, taking in $160,000 in just four locations, which represents the fourth best per-theater average of the year. Also opening in limited release is [Till](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/till), the story of Emmett Till and his mother, who fought for justice after his murder. Another 51% fall down to $3.3 million brings its total up to over $38 million. The percentages of a non-awards contender opening in October to less than $8 million reaching $22 million are in the single digits. After reaching nearly $50 million in just 10 days, Smile is outpacing Eli Roth’s family horror film The House With A Clock In Its Walls, which had a $12.6 million second weekend and $44.8 million in the bank. Ten years ago, Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie opened to $11.4 million and ended up with just $35.2 million. That is a remarkable hold for a horror film that puts it in very rare territory amongst films of its ilk that opened to $10 million or higher. This year, the studios offered up a singing crocodile and a comic mystery with an all-star cast deemed not ready for the prime time of awards season. The results speak for themselves, while theaters can at least look forward to releases of Halloween and Black Adam the next two weeks and just…
