Dortmund are not a team to back down or fall apart after a 0-1 deficit, and came out with the same energy in the second half. The second time — with the very last kick of the game, to boot — he made no mistake, and clawed his team back to parity. That slide-rule pass for Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in second-half stoppage time was a keen example of his creative prowess. He was impeccable in the timing of his challenges and frankly saved the day on numerous nervy occasions. Playing on the left side of midfield, Goretzka had a box-to-box role and was charged with both launching Bayern attacks and showing some defensive steel. He’s nigh-undroppable for club and country, and had his involvement in both Bayern goals — though he only got credited with one assist. Sané quieted things down with an absolute screamer in the 53rd minute, again beating Mayer when the BVB keeper might have done better. But Goretzka gets the nod for a very important opening goal. He’s been much-maligned and didn’t get the start...but saved the entire day for his team. Heroic efforts in defense, with Upamecano leading the way. Niklas Süle made his trademark Sülinho forays, Julian Brandt teased with some fantastic service from the wings, and Youssoufa Moukoko and Anthony Modeste provided the goals. Here’s our awards on the day.

Dortmund Snatch Bayern Draw With With Last-gasp Modeste ... (Barron's)

Anthony Modeste scored four minutes into added time as Dortmund fought back to snatch a 2-2 home draw with Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Frimpong added another after the restart. "We are satisfied. Paulinho scored in the 90th minute to start the Alonso era in the best possible fashion for Leverkusen. Saying the draw was "a fair result", Nagelsmann turned the focus on his own side, saying "we could have closed it down, but we didn't." Modeste scuffed a golden chance to equalise in the 83rd minute, but he spared his blushes ten minutes later, securing Dortmund their first draw of the season. Bayern were reduced to ten men in the 90th minute when Kingsley Coman picked up a second yellow for a challenge on Karim Adeyemi.

Anthony Modeste sparked wild celebrations for Borussia Dortmund with his last minute equaliser against Bayern Munich.

As for Julian Nagelsmann's team, it is another disappointing result in the German top-flight. At 17 years old, Moukoko became the youngest player to score a Bundesliga goal in a match between these two teams. Youssoufa Moukoko and the veteran forward ensured a fantastic comeback with their second-half goals to secure the 2-2 draw.

For sure, it’s early days, but we’re happy today and now we’ll review and analyze for the next game,” Alonso said in a mixture of German and English. We wanted to play a good game and I think the players enjoyed it,” said Alonso, who had only two days to work with the team. The Leverkusen players were clearly keen to impress their new coach on Saturday. “Sometimes we think the simplest goals are the most difficult,” Modeste said of his missed chance. “I had to score. It seemed easier to score as he somehow mishit Karim Adeyemi’s perfectly placed cross from close range and allowed Bayern’s Manuel Neuer to avert the danger.

Five observations from Bayern Munich's thrilling 2-2 draw versus ... (Bavarian Football Works)

Bayern Munich's much-anticipated game against Borussia Dortmund did not disappoint. In what was a thrilling encounter from start to finish, the Bavarians ...

A top defender needs to be vigilant at all times and throw in everything and the kitchen sink for the full 90. In this game, however, the refereeing was egregious, and this wouldn’t pass in a Sunday league game. It is embarrassing when the defense switches off during the last 15 minutes of a game and concedes twice in the process. The CBs however, have to be better. The team gifted Dortmund the draw, and this is simply not good enough. It really isn’t that big of a dive from “Supamecano” to “Upamecan-oh”, which seems to be the problem. The defense was caught snoozing in the dying seconds, and again, there is no excuse for that. In what was a thrilling encounter from start to finish, the Bavarians ended up with a last minute draw after a late collapse. A wonderful footballing display from both sides, and kudos to Dortmund for rising from the ashes like a phoenix and torching that paper-mache Bayern defense. You simply cannot blame that on the coach. Jamal Musiala grabbed two assists this game with great timely runs and good vision, while Leroy Sané scored off a powerful effort that the goalkeeper could only deflect into the net. That would be a good way to summarize the game.

MOTM Poll: Borussia Dortmund Mount a Late Comeback to Secure ... (Fear The Wall)

He brought a much-needed attacking energy into the mix, and though he did miss a big chance in front of goal, he also headed one home in the dying embers of the game. Today he was unselfish with his assist to Moukoko, and embraced his position from the bench. The German was a constant playmaking threat, drawing fouls and out-maneuvering Bayern’s defenders on the wing. Dortmund pressed high in an attempt to overwhelm Bayern’s defense; even keeper Alexander Meyer was in the box. As the game was drawing to a close, Bayern’s Kingsley Coman recklessly held onto Karim Adeyemi bringing play to a stop. The first half began and Dortmund’s defense was promising but Bayern’s Leon Goretzka managed an opener in what I think was Bayern’s only shot of the half.

[Bundesliga](https://theathletic.com/football/bundesliga/)’s attempts to ramp up international interest in their flagship game as a bit of a swindle — of late, this game has only been a “classic” in the Greek tragedy sense, the outcome being pre-ordained. Anthony Modeste’s late, late header past Manuel Neuer only snatched a draw, but the Signal Iduna Park crowd greeted it with the level of pandemonium reserved for a delicious, unexpected triumph.
