Google Pixel 7 smartphone & Pixel Watch debut (AppleInsider)

The Google Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Watch have been officially announced as a coherent product ecosystem that all works together for the user.

The Pixel Watch runs Wear OS and Fitbit software. The tablet also acts as a home hub with a magnetic dock. The Pixel 7 The Pixel 7 Pro comes in hazel, snow, and obsidian. It has Fitbit health tech, Google services, and a round watch face. The stainless steel finish is available in three colors — gold, silver, and black. The Pixel 7 has a dual camera system on the back and an ultra wide selfie camera. It uses machine learning to re-mosaic images and de-noise even as the user zooms. Pixel 7 Pro has a 6.7-inch display with 10Hz to 120Hz variable refresh rate. This camera system works together with the G2 processor to produce pristine photos. Google emphasized the "Pixel portfolio," a series of products that work better together, similar to Apple's product ecosystem. The Pixel 7 comes in [Snow](https://shop-links.co/cieynDov6QF?u1=1006pixel7), [Obsidian](https://shop-links.co/cieynegcxYG?u1=1006pixel7) and [Lemongrass](https://shop-links.co/cieyn87cv8v?u1=1006pixel7) finishes, while the higher-end 7 Pro comes in [Snow](https://shop-links.co/cieyo6Q5hQ8?u1=1006pixel7), [Obsidian](https://shop-links.co/cieypHmFRaV?u1=1006pixel7) and [Hazel](https://shop-links.co/cieyoCFhIdJ?u1=1006pixel7). On top of powering a better camera experience, the new Tensor G2 processor powering Google’s new phones promises enhancements to basic things like recording transcripts and making calls (you know, the whole reason you need a phone in the first place). We’ll be putting the new Pixel phones through their full paces to see how they stack up to the competition, so stay tuned for our full reviews. The designs take last year’s attractive overhaul and make them even better-looking, and the new camera features — including vastly improved zoom, some nice accessibility additions and a few borrowed tricks from the iPhone — could make these some of the best camera phones around. The standard Pixel 7 promises improved Real Tone technology (which is designed to capture more accurate skin tones, particularly for those with darker skin), and a new Cinematic Blur video feature that will let you create dramatic, movie-like focus effects, much like Cinematic mode on the These perks will be joining the usual camera benefits you’ll get on a Pixel, such as Magic Eraser (for getting rid of unwanted people and objects in the background) and Motion Mode for keeping video smooth during high-action scenes. The Pixel 7’s front camera, which is now on par with its Pro counterpart, can capture 4K video at 60 frames per second and offers a wider field of view for those big group selfies. Stepping up to the Pixel 7 Pro gets you a large 6.7-inch display with a sharp 3120 x 1440 resolution and an even smoother 120Hz refresh rate. It promises faster speeds, of course (the previous Tensor chip held up well against rival phones, despite falling behind on some tests), but just as important is its ability to deliver an even more advanced camera experience. The displays are similar to the Pixel 6 series, starting with the Pixel 7’s 6.3-inch 1080p screen that promises 25% better brightness alongside a 90Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling. While the Pixel 7 builds on the colorful, rectangular design introduced in last year’s models, it still immediately stands out as its own thing. Google’s latest flagship phones build on the slick new design introduced in the previous-gen models, all while introducing more advanced cameras and an upgraded Google Tensor G2 processor that promises faster speeds and smart improvements to everything from making phone calls to cleaning up blurry images.

What We Didn't Get From Google's Pixel 7 Event (CNET)

From updates to Google Assistant to the rumored foldable phones, these are all the ways Google jilted us.

But while the Pixel 7 was unveiled in all its glory, nothing was said about a potential rival to [Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 4](/tech/mobile/galaxy-z-fold-4-samsungs-foldable-phone-gets-better-design-same-steep-price/). The biggest announcements from Google's Pixel 7 event (The Verge)

Miss out on the Pixel event? We've got you covered with the major headlines on all of the must-know announcements, including the Pixel Tablet, the price and ...

The ultrawide camera has widened its field of view, and the 48-megapixel telephoto camera has a slightly boosted Super Res Zoom (from 20x to 30x) and another step of optical zoom, going from 4x in the Pixel 6 Pro to 5x in the newer phone. The company is touting that this gadget will be useful for things like video calling, photo editing, or just yelling at it across the room to summon Google Assistant. Its user interface will adapt to a more Nest Hub-like layout when it’s attached to the charging dock. The Pixel Watch comes in one size: a 41mm case. The tablet has pogo pins on its rear that attach magnetically to the dock. Like the Pixel 7, Google is touting 4K / 60fps in all of its new cameras (selfie cam included). The screen seems like a big deal, but one of the other big highlights here (and likely the main reason for the price gap between the two models) is the cameras. It features a couple of notable improvements, including the jump to the Tensor G2 processor, a refined (but less jubilant) set of colors, up to three days of battery life in Extreme Battery Saver mode, and a better 10.8-megapixel selfie cam. The Pixel 7 starts at $599 — just like the Pixel 6 — though its OLED display is just a hair smaller, going from 6.4 inches to 6.3 inches. (The Pixel 6 has an 8-megapixel front-facing cam.) While the camera hardware is similar to the last-gen model, Google is touting some Pixel 7-exclusive features, like 4K / 60 frames per second video on each lens and Cinematic Blur, one of its newfangled camera features that adds depth of field to your videos. The Pixel 7 Pro is Google’s true flagship phone, as was the Pixel 6 Pro in 2021. All said, there wasn’t much in the way of surprises this year since Google already spilled its own hardware beans at Google I/O, but it was great to see these devices up close and to get firm prices, release dates, and more.

The color matching here looks good, and while the blue here is much darker than the green of Hazel, it still looks like a million bucks if you can justify the price. The Nano Pop is my go-to case for how comfortable it feels in the hand, and both the Avo(cado) Green and Blueberry Navy colorways pop amongst a field of single-shade cases. While drop protection and style are great perks of getting a case, what the 7 Pro needs more than anything is extra grip. UAG's trademark honeycomb air cushioning is concealed inside, and the slight curvature to the back helps ground the Pixel 7 Pro better in your hand. Spigen's Liquid Air may not be quite as popular as the Rugged Armor, but it has two distinct advantages: the entire back of this Pixel 7 Pro case is textured, and it comes in a color besides black. This Pixel 7 Pro case comes with two front frames: one with a screen protector and one without. Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro (2022): Features, Price, Release Date (WIRED)

These new Android handsets don't represent a giant leap from last year's Pixel 6, but they do contain some smart updates.

The Pixel 7 is a tiny bit smaller and lighter than the Pixel 6, with a 6.3-inch screen (versus 6.4 inches). So while Face Unlock gives you a quicker path to your home screen, you can't use the feature to authenticate payments or to sign into banking apps—you'll have to use your fingerprint for those. The screen is still not completely flat like on the Pixel 7, though. The Pro model employs polished aluminum, and the standard Pixel has a matte finish. Pixel 7 Pro Hands-On: Google Goes Big on the Camera (CNET)

Google's Pixel 7 Pro has a better zoom and a slightly upgraded design compared to last year's Pixel 6 Pro.

The Pixel 7 Pro seems like a minor upgrade over last year's Pixel 6 Pro, but it will likely feel like a noteworthy upgrade for those coming from a Pixel phone that's at least two years old. As was the case with the Pixel 6 Pro, the Pixel 7 Pro's display can boost its refresh rate up to 120Hz. The Pixel 7 Pro's color options include obsidian (black), snow (white) and hazel (a grayish green). The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro each have a slightly updated version of the design that Google introduced with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. [super-fast millimeter wave 5G.](/tech/mobile/not-all-5g-is-the-same-all-the-flavors-and-names-explained/) Google claims both Pixel phones should last for more than 24 hours on a single charge and up to 72 hours with Extreme Battery Saver mode turned on. With Guided Frame, the Pixel 7 or 7 Pro can verbally direct you on how to position your phone in order to capture a good selfie. The Pixel 7 Pro has a 5x optical zoom compared with last year's 4x, along with other zoom tricks too. Google uses the same idea with the Pixel 7 Pro's dedicated 48-megapixel telephoto camera. It looked crisp and detailed in the moment, but it's hard to tell without looking at it on a bigger screen. That enables it to blend in detail from the telephoto and main cameras for better image quality than digital zoom alone would provide, Google said. [Google's $899 (£849, AU$1,299) Pixel 7 Pro](/tech/mobile/pixel-7-pixel-7-pro-and-pixel-watch-everything-new-google-announced/) is taking the most expensive spot in the company's phone lineup, and like last year's Pixel 6 Pro is using its larger size and third camera to set itself apart. The new phones also signal Google's approach in doing so, which boils down to undercutting its competitors' prices, focusing on camera quality and developing exclusive software features for its phones.

Do your Pixel 6 cases fit the Pixel 7? | Digital Trends (Digital Trends)

The Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are here. But does the slightly upgraded design mean you'll need a new case for your phone? Here's what you need to know.

This means you get a 90Hz refresh rate on the Pixel 7 and up to 120Hz on the Pixel 7 Pro. Your old Pixel 6 Pro case won’t fit the Pixel 7 Pro. The new phone is a little wider and shorter than the Pixel 6 Pro, so you’ll have to purchase a new case for your new phone. Do the Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have wireless charging? | Digital ... (Digital Trends)

The Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are Google's next flagship Android phones. But do they have wireless charging? Let's take a look and find out.

Unlike the Pixel 7, Google isn’t experimenting with the size of the Pixel 7 Pro. The Pixel 7 Pro is also rated to last up to 24 hours, but we’ll reserve the final verdict until our review. The Pixel 7 packs a 4355mAh battery, compared to the 4600mAh battery found on the Pixel 6. The Google Pixel 7 has been reduced in size, and as a result, Google has also reduced the battery capacity on the new device. To recall, the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro came with 21W fast wireless charging. Despite the sub-$600 price tag, the Google Pixel 7 features wireless charging.

You can get everything from a wireless charger to a phone grip for the Pixel 7 and the Pixel 7 Pro. Beyond that, the stand is fully collapsible, making it easy for you to grab and go. It's an excellent option if you want another charging cable for your Pixel or are looking to replace the one bundled with the phone. In other features, as the Pixel Stand supports Qi charging, you can use it to top up other compatible devices at up to 15W speed. While it won't give the charging speed of a Pixel Stand (2nd Gen), it can deliver a decent 10W charging, which is enough to push some extra charge into your phone even if you are using it for navigation. It's also easy to use, and the clamps securely hold your phone in place. It's the only wireless charger that can deliver over 20W charging to your phone. Thanks to the support for USB Power Delivery (USB PD) and PPS, the car charger can deliver up to 65W power through its USB-C port, which is more than enough to juice up the Pixel 7 or the 7 Pro at their top speed. Pixel 7 Pro AI-Powered Cameras Could Make You Rethink That ... (CNET)

Exclusive: Along with new camera hardware, the Tensor G2 AI brain in Google's $899 phone helps you zoom, focus, unblur faces and shoot in the dark.

The camera is the same as the one used in the Pixel 6 models. 7: An earlier version of this story incorrectly described the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro phones' main 50-megapixel camera. Google developed a method called Super Res Zoom that takes advantage of hand shake to gather more detailed data about the subject and zoom better. The Pixel 7 Pro's 50-megapixel main camera and 48-megapixel telephoto cameras offer something of a fix. "Obviously, the quality of 30x isn't going to be quite what it is at 10x," Schiffhauer said. The Pixel 6 Pro often pauses when activating its telephoto camera. You'll get full 12-megapixel raw images only at the Pixel 7 Pro's fixed zoom levels of 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x and 10x. For all the cameras, though, Google now uses an AI algorithm to process focusing data from the image sensor. On the Pixel 7 Pro, the ultrawide has the same sensor as last year but gets a macro mode, autofocus and a wider 0.5x zoom. That improves photos compared with just digitally upscaling a photo from the main camera, Schiffhauer said. (The 2x mode works on Google's Pixel 7, too.) The Pixel 7 models' keeps the same 50-megapixel camera but houses it in a restyled camera bar.

Pixel 7 Pro teardown shows better cooling, cleaner layout than last ... (Ars Technica)

A cleaner layout enables more thermal tape over the SoC, camera, and battery.

Part of the laughable infeasibility of mmWave is that your hand easily blocks the signal, so while the Pixel 7 might have a clear line-of-sight in portrait mode, mmWave in landscape on the Pixel 7 would require some awkward hand positioning. On the Pixel 7 Pro, the mmWave antenna cable is way longer and runs around the perimeter of the battery under the metal mid-frame. Other phones, like the Galaxy S22 Ultra, have a better shot of picking up a signal with [two mmWave antennas](https://youtu.be/aC30DHRWB1A?t=437) on either side of the device. The battery has pull tabs, but they still won't work without soaking the battery adhesive in alcohol first. Even if you're pro-mmWave (I guess that would make you the CEO of Verizon?), the Pixel 7 Pro has only one antenna on top of the phone. Just as it looks on the outside, the Pixel 7 Pro is pretty close to the Pixel 6 Pro, but you can spot some refinements.

Like the iPhone 14, the Google Pixel 7 is unfinished (Macworld)

Phone makers have become masters at both delivering and holding back features so the perfect phone is always a year away.

And by the time they arrive, there will be something else the iPhone doesn’t have. One of the Pixel 7’s premier camera features is Cinematic Blur, which is basically a carbon copy of the iPhone 13’s Cinematic Mode. Apple and Google are never going to give us more than the exact feature set calculated to keep us happy enough to buy the latest model, but unsatisfied enough to want to upgrade the following year. Phones are playing a simultaneous game of catch-up and one-up that gets repeated each year, and there’s always going to be something that one has and the other doesn’t. The same can be said of the iPhone 14. The Pixel 7 Pro looks a lot like last year’s model, with a camera bar on the back and small hole-punch for the selfie camera.

Google's Pixel 7 Pricing Challenge: Carriers Offer iPhones and ... (CNET)

Google's pricing on the Pixel 7 is lower than rival flagships from Apple and Samsung, but is that enough?

For the carriers, subsidizing the price of a device is a good way to lock users into 24- to 36-month financing plans and make it more complicated to switch to a rival. At Verizon, for example, depending on your plan and trade-in device (and your willingness to stay with the carrier for 36 months) you could get an iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14, Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S22 Plus for free. He adds that while the Pixels are "a little bit cheaper than the iPhone" it won't be "enough to really notice if you finance" and will only play a role if you are paying out of pocket for the phones. [Pixel 7](/tech/mobile/google-pixel-7-hands-on-fresh-design-new-camera-features-same-price/) and [Pixel 7 Pro](/tech/mobile/pixel-7-pro-hands-on-google-goes-big-on-the-camera/) promise to be impressive phones that could rival [Apple's iPhone 14](/tech/mobile/iphone-14-pro-vs-pixel-6-pro-camera-comparison-a-photo-is-worth-1000/) and [Samsung's Galaxy S22](/tech/mobile/samsung-galaxy-s22-review-pocket-friendly-phone-has-great-cameras-mediocre-battery-life/). Apple, meanwhile, prices the iPhone 14 at $799 and the 14 Pro Max at $1,099. While the software and camera features are noteworthy, Google made a particular point to emphasize during Thursday's [Pixel event](/tech/mobile/pixel-7-pixel-7-pro-and-pixel-watch-everything-new-google-announced/) that its phones will be cheaper than its rivals' during its [fall product launch event](/tech/mobile/pixel-7-pixel-7-pro-and-pixel-watch-everything-new-google-announced/).

Here's How Google Could Get You to Actually Buy a Pixel 7 Phone (CNET)

Google's Pixel line barely has any market share in the US, but for Google to control the direction of Android, it needs more customers.

Google promises five years of security updates for the Pixel 7, a sign of long-term thinking. The off-season phones, like this year's Pixel 6A, offer excellent value. Apple [now holds a majority share](https://www.engadget.com/iphone-overtakes-android-us-market-share-223251196.html) in the US, the first time that's happened [since 2010](https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/report-google-android-surpasses-iphone-in-u-s/). Amazon's Ring and Echo products are strong, too, but Apple is relatively weak, and that opens the door for Google. Someone who already owns a Nest doorbell or thermostat could get a major price cut on a Pixel product. Most cool features ultimately are merely "icing on the cake" that only appeals to the limited market of early adopters and other tech-savvy buyers, he said. Google could benefit from that kind of maverick mentality. But it can be hard to convince consumers that new features are must-haves, not just nice-to-haves. Here are some changes Google could make so Pixels won't remain a rarity. But given its niche status, Google needs to do a better job of getting people to buy its phones. Google is forced to play a balancing act with its original equipment manufacturing, or OEM, partners, slowly nudging players like Samsung without getting too competitive. [a little over 2% of smartphone market share](https://gs.statcounter.com/vendor-market-share/mobile/north-america) in the US, according to analytics firm StatCounter.

"However, it will be dependent upon global scale and breaking into new markets to achieve this and create a profitable business that can last." Priced at $599 in the United States, the Pixel 7 is being positioned as relatively affordable. "Google has the potential to become a long-term player in the smartphone market," said Bjørhovde. Google has instead focused on boosting its Android operating system, which was launched in 2008 and included more than 80 percent of the smartphones sold in the first half of 2022, according to Canalys. While Google's phones are comparable in terms of quality to the top sellers, the product "has often lacked backing from Google" in terms of marketing, said Runar Bjørhovde, a research analyst at market research firm Canalys. Google is looking to up its smartphone game with the Pixel 7, the latest entrant in a competitive corner of personal electronics where it has traditionally been a bit player.
