The Guide #55: After the backlash to Chris Pratt's Super Mario, why ... (The Guardian)

In this week's newsletter: the instant fury to Pratt's inauthentic portrayal of a fictional Italian plumber shows it just isn't possible to please fans.

Let's discuss the Super Mario Movie trailer (Eurogamer.net)

From Illumination's rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom through to Jack Black's Bowser, Keegan Michael-Key's Toad, Charlie Day's Luigi and - of course - Chris ...

I'll preface this by saying that I don't care that much for the Mario movie. I'm not sure if he's trying to put on a bit of a New York accent, but whatever it is it's not working for me. This is why I showed the trailer to my wife saying, "Oh man, it looks just like Mario 3." I had pretty much forgotten this film was on the way, so the trailer was kind of a double gift for me. How this all translates into a full movie remains to be seen, of course, but whichever way Mario himself turns out, I'm cautiously optimistic about the whole endeavour. Isn't he just an avatar for the player to "wahoo!" "Oh, this doesn't look so bad," I thought when the trailer first began. Does this mean that this take on Nintendo's games is going to be an origin story for the brothers? I have a lot of questions, and I am looking forward to finding out more in the future. Leading with Jack Black's Bowser was a masterstroke, since a perfect alchemy seems to have been found between the School of Rock star and Mario's nemesis, while the Mushroom Kingdom looks simply incredible (and simply quite edible, really - Mario levels at their best look good enough to eat, as was the case here with what Illumination has done with Nintendo's world). So, Mario doesn't seem to know the Mushroom Kingdom in this film! From Illumination's rendition of the Mushroom Kingdom through to Jack Black's Bowser, Keegan Michael-Key's Toad, Charlie Day's Luigi and - of course - Chris Pratt's not-so-novel take on Mario, there's a lot to unpack.

You’ve got an entourage of evil minions, pun not intended, in Bowser’s legion of Koopas, and a comically evil lair made in his own image. Upon arriving in the new world, which is commonly a fantasy setting, the main character is thrust into becoming a hero who, under the guidance of a trusty crew of allies, i.e., Toad, must cleanse the world from its imposing and evil overseer: enter Jack Bowser. His dope-as-hell villain entrance was chock full of the ingredients that make for an isekai villain. Hollywood films like Space Jam, Back to the Future, and even the 1993 Super Mario Bros. trailer places the film in that genre. The usual structure of an isekai story revolves around its main character, in this case, Mario, being suddenly teleported into a new world. [the first official trailer for the Super Mario Bros.

Taking to Twitter as soon as the trailer went live, Strong shared a picture of herself with Martinet. "It should have been Charles," she wrote, with many in the replies sharing her sentiment.

Why Chris Pratt's performance in the Mario movie trailer is so ... (Ars Technica)

To be fair, the only examples of Mario's movie voice we have thus far are the two lines Pratt delivers in the trailer. Judging Pratt's entire Mario performance ...

Even young children can pick up on this characterization: After calling Chris Pratt's take on Mario "weird," my daughter proceeded to do her best imitation of what Mario is supposed to sound like in the form of a 30-second montage of Martinet-inflected "Woohoos" and "It's-a-me's." [Pratt told Variety](https://variety.com/2022/film/columns/chris-pratt-super-mario-bros-voice-jurassic-world-dominion-1235301622/) that Mario's voice in the movie would be "updated and unlike anything you've heard in the Mario World." Martinet's Mario voice is tuned for maximum impact during the kind of short, high-energy sound bites that get repeated hundreds of times during a game. While Martinet might be able to moderate his delivery for a new medium, I'm not sure it's necessarily the best idea for him to try. Pratt's second line in the trailer—"Mushroom Kingdom, here we come." To be fair, the only examples of Mario's movie voice we have thus far are the two lines Pratt delivers in the trailer.

9 big questions about the 'Super Mario Bros. Movie' trailer (The Washington Post)

Before Thursday's trailer, the scope of the film remained a mystery, and its confounding casting choices (Keegan-Michael Key as Toad?!) kept longtime fans ...

The Mario movie is an isekai, a Japanese genre of storytelling in which the protagonist is magically teleported from their home to another, unfamiliar environment. Princess Peach is the archetype of the damsel in distress. In the movie, will Mario be able to gain new chances at life by collecting coins? The most jarring aspect of the Mario film is hearing Mario speak intelligible, complete sentences. In the case of the Galaxy series, it was tied to Mario’s health. Martinet is still reportedly voicing characters in the film, in what Nintendo has described as a “surprise” role. In the origin story written by Nintendo, and conveyed in “Yoshi’s Island,” we never witness the birth and parentage of Mario and Luigi. Penguins in Mario games have been a recurring presence since 1996′s “Super Mario 64,” where a level named Cool, Cool Mountain introduced us to penguins who love to race by sliding down the mountain. This leads us to further questions about the scope of the Mushroom Kingdom. After 40 years, this remains the biggest question at the roots of the Mario bros’ history. Before Thursday’s trailer, the scope of the film remained a mystery, and its confounding casting choices (Keegan-Michael Key as Toad?!) kept longtime fans wondering: “Just what the heck kind of movie is this going to be?” In “Super Mario Odyssey,” there’s a shadow version of New York City called New Donk City.

11 'Mario' Characters, Power-Ups and More We Want to See in the ... (Variety)

After months of waiting, Nintendo fans were finally treated to the first look at the animated “Super Mario Bros.” movie from Illumination, the animation ...

Outside of Mario there are countless other Nintendo franchises that could use movies: “The Legend of Zelda,” “Kirby,” “Metroid,” “ Star Fox” and many more. It doesn’t need to be long, but “Super Mario Bros.” could use a flashback to Mario and Luigi’s younger years and see what led them to become adventurous plumbers. “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe” is Nintendo’s bestselling game of all time (bar “Wii Sports,” which came bundled with the console), so it would only make sense to rev up some engines in the “Super Mario Bros.” movie. Love them or hate them, water levels are as essential to the “Mario” games as his red hat. When DK does appear, he better throw barrels at Mario at some point, alluding to Mario’s first appearance in the “Donkey Kong” arcade game. Mario’s green companion first appeared in 1990’s “Super Mario World” and has since played a key role in games such as “Super Mario 64,” “Sunshine” and “Galaxy 2.” Of course, Yoshi also hatched his own franchise of quirky video games. We know that “Super Mario Bros.” will feature the obvious Mushroom Kingdom squad — Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Bowser and Toad — alongside Donkey Kong, Cranky Kong, Kamek and Spike. Throughout the “Mario” franchise, Nintendo has introduced some creative companions to assist the mustachioed hero on his journey. The mini villain has been a thorn in Mario’s side in many games, and the combination of him and his much bigger dad could be a formidable threat to the Mushroom Kingdom. The “Mario” video games have countless characters, worlds and power-ups to pull into the movie, so what other Easter Eggs could be hiding in the animated film? Power-ups are vital to every “Mario” game, allowing the plumber to grow, shrink, fly or throw fireballs with the help of some magic items. Since the trailer shows Mario reaching for a mushroom, before Toad scares the life out of him, it’s not hard to imagine the Italian plumber eating some for super-sized strength.

'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' Cast and Character Guide: Who's ... (Collider.com)

The famous Italian plumber has attracted a huge A-list cast for his first-ever animated movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

It’s possible that he’s from the world that Mario and Luigi resided in before being transported to the Mushroom Kingdom. In probably the most expansive spin-off Nintendo's ever done, there are a ton of games in DK's own Donkey Kong Country games, where DK explores the jungles of his island with his family and even gets his very own reptilian arch-nemesis with King K. Donkey Kong has been with Mario since the very beginning of his career, and they've been friends and foes at various points. He even has some lieutenants that help him lead, like the sorcerer Kamek (Kevin Michael Richardson) who can be seen in the trailer, and even his own children the Koopalings, most notably Bowser Jr. For a guide to who is playing who in the first animated feature trip to the world of the Mushroom Kingdom, read below to find out who is invited to this "Mario Party". Peach very much has fit into the "damsel in distress" archetype for many years, but in the past years, she's made a lot of strides and has been fleshed out quite a bit as more than someone who is just in need of saving. Luigi even got his own spin-off series with the Luigi's Mansion games, where players got to control the famed brother as he fought his fears through a creepy house and became a certified ghostbuster. As many likely know, Mario was born in the arcades with Donkey Kong and then later with the beloved Super Mario Bros. The face of Nintendo Entertainment and arguably the face of video gaming as a whole, Mario has become one of the most recognized figures in pop culture history since he debuted all the way back in 1981 with the first Donkey Kong game. Set in an alternate dimension where humans evolved from dinosaurs, which has absolutely nothing to do with the original games, it remains to this day as one of the earliest and worst examples of video game-to-film adaptations. Universal Studios is particularly capitalizing on that potential with the production of Super Nintendo Land where fans can enter the Mushroom Kingdom and race alongside Mario and his friends. Since 1981, Mario has appeared in a whopping 200 games, making him one of the most prolific fictional characters of all time.
