'Amsterdam' Review: A Madcap Mystery With Many Whirring Parts (The New York Times)

Christian Bale, Margot Robbie and John David Washington lead a crowded cast of zanies in David O. Russell's latest screwball outing.

A lot of this really happened, the movie announces early, yet while that’s eye-poppingly true it tends to feel irrelevant. It’s an engaging landscape, certainly, and you can feel Russell’s affection for the character (and actor) every time the camera cozies up to him. For that film, Bale’s good looks were obscured by a furry beard, a monumental gut and a doleful comb-over; for his role here, the actor has slimmed down and effectively come out of hiding, so you can see the planes shifting under his narrow, expressive face. That’s also where he met a nurse, Valerie (Margot Robbie), and found his best friend, Harold (John David Washington), now a lawyer with a healthy practice and endless patience. At its center are three American comrades who met in Europe during World War I, formed a tight friendship and — as you see in an extended flashback — lived for a while in Amsterdam, where they recovered (more or sometimes less) from the war and rhapsodically played bohemians until reality called them back home. It’s a handsome period romp, a 1930s screwball pastiche filled with mugging performers who charm and seduce as they run around chasing down a mystery, playing detective, tripping over their feet and navigating an international conspiracy that is best enjoyed if you don’t pay it too much attention — which seems to be the approach that Russell himself has taken.

Amsterdam (Plugged In)

Part screwball comedy, part murder mystery, part political thriller, part social commentary, Amsterdam never locks onto one bullseye.

But they have a strong sense of right and wrong, as well. And yet, Amsterdam is kind of a mess as a movie. (We’re eventually led to believe that Valerie’s not sick at all, and the drugs are a way to keep her somewhat malleable and dependent on them.) Later, as she staggers around the street and struggles to reach the front door of a retired general’s house, the general’s wife believes she’s drunk, not sick. She’s sick, her family says, and they keep her both sequestered to the house and in the thrall of a number of drugs that, she’s told, are meant to help her. A woman is pushed into the street and run over by a car. In the war, he bucks the racism of the day and agrees to lead Harold and other Black men into battle. Burt’s are the most obvious and most debilitating. He and Burt run an annual charity gala for the people they served with, and it’s clearly a passion for both of them. The wartime trauma that both Burt and Harold suffer is traumatic indeed. The priest (brandishing a Bible for emphasis) argues that to keep those jagged hunks of metal amounts to blasphemy. Back home, he dedicates his days to patching up fellow vets—giving them the ability to cover their wounds and to live in society as well as can be expected. The conflict took his eye, his looks, his health and his prospects.

Director Russell’s star has fallen significantly since the early, anarchic provocations of his “Spanking the Monkey,” “Flirting with Disaster” and “Three Kings.” Bad behavior and the box office disaster of his brilliant, transcendentalist slapstick comedy “I Heart Huckabees” put his career on ice for years, until Russell was able to reinvent himself shepherding all-star casts to Oscar glory in faux-edgy, commercial crowd pleasers like “The Fighter,” “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle.” “Amsterdam” feels like the filmmaker’s attempt to marry his prestige picture phase with the overt politics and atonal, exploratory weirdness of his earlier work. Obviously inspired by Francois Truffaut’s “Jules and Jim,” these scenes have a lovely, lyrical quality that goes a long way toward establishing the aura of woozy romanticism Russell seems to be shooting for. The most delightful surprises are Rami Malek and Anya Taylor-Joy as a pair of kooky philanthropists, with Malek’s performance in particular edited to emphasize the breathy pauses in his line readings and the actor’s blank, unnerving stare. (a superbly suave John David Washington) being hired to investigate the mysterious death of their former commanding officer. It’s one of the most obnoxious performances I’ve ever seen, sucking all the oxygen out of the room and driving this critic to distraction, until something clicked somewhere during the second reel and I suddenly started to find him incredibly, unaccountably hilarious. Bale’s playing a disfigured WWI vet who runs a street clinic dispensing experimental pain medications to his fellow wounded soldiers, and spends most of the movie hopped up on his own wares with his glass eye falling out at inopportune moments.

Clair (Zoe Saldana) and just as they go to reveal the results, Liz is brutally run over by a car driven by a scarred man (Timothy Olyphant), who then convinces the crowd that Harold and Burt pushed her. How the movie went from a charming war friends pastiche to an ending that has Robert De Niro’s General character reading a speech next to actual footage of his real-life counterpart in history doing the same is exactly what’s wrong with Amsterdam. They’re great together, and their halcyon remembrances of Amsterdam as their happiest and purest days of love and friendship are the most affecting of the film. What starts out as a relatively compact and clever tale of two WWI veterans who get framed for murder devolves into a hodgepodge of connected tangents that includes everything from a triangular soulmate relationship to the surreptitious rise of facism in the United States between WWI and WWII. Russell had the discipline to keep a tight rein on the overly ambitious scale of his script.

Movie Review: 'Amsterdam' - RedCarpetCrash.com (RedCarpetCrash.com)

It's during the flashback where we see the beginnings of the friendship between Burt Berendsen (Oscar winner Christian Bale) and Harold Woodman (John David ...

I believe the message is the power of friendship and love wins over the lust for power, however it’s hard to know for sure. It’s also not quite a farce, and is a madcap with a shortage of “mad”. It’s not a whodunnit since we see the crime happen, and instead is more of a “we must solve the case to avoid prison” – kind of a quasi-comedy caper film, only they aren’t trying to get away with anything. There are so many characters and so many story lines and so many familiar faces that the film couldn’t possibly be expected to flow smoothly. Burt has a scarred face and glass eye from his war injuries, and Harold has been contacted by the daughter (Taylor Swift) of their former commanding officer (Ed Begley Jr). And it’s that word, “expectations”, that is usually the culprit.
