While he’s thrilled to watch viewers fall in love with the bears at Katmai, Fitz said he also hopes fans remember to appreciate the importance of the surrounding ecosystem that enables them to thrive. Still, the bears at Katmai have been lucky, said the founder of Fat Bear Week, Mike Fitz, the resident naturalist at Explore.org. “Our brown bears in Katmai National Park are pretty charismatic,” said Guy Runco, the executive director of the Katmai Conservancy. The water temperature at Brooks River has been survivable so far, Fitz said, even as salmon runs nearby have collapsed in recent years. But those who shine on camera, Runco said, are naturally more likely to make the cut. As new and familiar faces alike emerge from hibernation every summer to feast up for the coming winter, the ways they find food, raise offspring and survive injuries all tell unique stories of resilience.

Bear Home Entries Hit Another Record in Connecticut (NBC Connecticut)

It's already been a record-breaking year for bears breaking into homes in our state, and the number might only rise during the fall which experts say is a.

Other suggestions include locking doors and closing windows, especially when you leave the house. “We're dealing with an expanding bear population, a lot of bears that are starting to become very habituated, more comfortable around people, a lot of them are also starting to become food-conditioned, and learning that people are good sources of food,” Dickson said. “One of the things that I think is a little nerve-racking for all of us in the Wildlife Division is that we're also entering that time of year in the fall when bears are incredibly active, trying to eat a lot of things, put a lot of weight on, get ready for hibernation,” Dickson said.

Fat Bear Week: Race is on for Alaska's bulkiest grizzly (BBC News)

Alaskan bears stuffing themselves for the winter have gained a loving audience around the world.

The winner of Fat Bear Week 2022 remains to be seen. In November, the bears start heading towards their dens where they will hibernate for six months. "He's the most patient bear that I have ever seen." Bears emerge from their hibernation in the summer months weary and thin. But Bear 747, winner of Fat Bear Week 2020, might give Otis a run for his money. For Alaskan bears, it means eating a jaw-dropping 500lb (225 kg) of fresh salmon.

The Bear shows kitchens don't have to be ruled by tyrant male chefs (iNews)

The hit US comedy-drama, which has now begun airing on Disney+ in the UK, shows that there is an alternative to the aggressive despot chef persona.

Sydney (played with great possession by Ayo Edebiri) and gentle pastry chef Marcus – whose attempts at the perfect donut, explored through a delightful side-plot throughout the season, are destroyed in Carmy’s rage – walk out, refusing to stand for this cliched show of machismo. It will be called, as Carmy and Mikey are both nicknamed throughout the show (their family name is Berzatto), The Bear. This is a sort of sub-genre of male chef that populates fictional food media (the horrible boyfriend Magnus in season one of Love Life is a great example; Bradley Cooper in the slightly silly Burnt is another), as well as the real-life dating apps of major cities. When the restaurant sets itself up to accept delivery orders, an error made by the otherwise highly competent and hard-working sous chef Sydney (who has come to the restaurant specifically to work with Carmy, aware of his reputation, and who describes leaving previous roles because of poor treatment by withering, screaming, red-faced chefs) makes it impossible for the cooks to keep up with the demand. On a more public-facing scale, [Gordon Ramsay’s](https://inews.co.uk/culture/television/gordon-ramsay-future-food-stars-bbc-one-2022-review-1550881?ico=in-line_link) performative yelling may be a bit of a caricature at this point, but it’s certainly rooted in real behaviour. We come to understand that we are flashing back to Carmy’s time as a culinary wunderkind, beloved by the food media, working in Michelin-starred restaurants in New York City.

Fat Bear Week Is in Full Swing (The New York Times)

Mike Fitz, a former park ranger at Katmai National Park and the founder of Fat Bear Week, used to keep “a facade of neutrality.” Now he's naming names.

“People learn more about brown bears and the salmon this way, and hopefully that translated to a greater sense of care for this remarkable place, as well as for bears and salmon around the world.” Perhaps the most curious thing to observe during Fat Bear Week this year, one producing a lot of chatter among park employees, has been the relationship between 909 and 910, sister bears who both have cubs of different ages playing with each other (910 is not in the running this year). According to the park service, the male bear has become one of the largest brown bears on Earth, perhaps weighing as much as 1,400 pounds. “Personally, I do try to look at the extenuating circumstances for the bears and what they had to go through to get fat.” “Some of the more amazing backpacking experiences were wandering around the park and not seeing anyone for several days.” [where the park has webcams](https://explore.org/livecams)) both in the early summer and in the fall in order to qualify. “You can read and listen to all of the advice — it helps prepare you mentally, but at the same time I’m thinking, ‘Oh, that is a bear in front of me, looking at me,’” Mr. 909’s Yearling was crowned champion](https://www.nps.gov/katm/learn/fat-bear-junior-2022.htm) and is now moving on to the adult competition. Fat Bear Week has become a weeklong, bracket-style elimination contest that pits the bulkiest bears of Katmai National Park against one another. Fitz said. Listen to this story here. Each year in early July, salmon return from the ocean, through the waterways of Southeast Alaska, and up Anan Creek. Bears follow ...

“I don’t think we have the amount of fat bears to really have a fair competition,” Robbins muses, “And we’re running this at the same time, so we’re not really looking to compete with Katmai. Katmai has that well done, so we’ll leave that to them and focus on the antics of Anan bears.” “This year, how it started is that we just had a whiteboard in our breezeway at the float house, and I think one of the gals just started writing out categories for bear awards, and everybody would throw – you know – write down what they thought and why.
