London Marathon 2022: elite races underway as 42000 start — live (The Guardian)

It turned out Alex Hess relieved me, thanks for that, but this is Daniel back now – just in time to see Yehualaw take a trip. I don't think anyone asks her if ...

The pace, though, is slowing; Paula wondered if, perhaps, Yehualaw has binned her bid for a time and is now focused solely on crossing the line first. The course record is still in jeopardy too. Debrunner now leads the women’s wheelchair by a minute or so. She’ll win by a distance while, back to theme, the Weirwolf is in a group of three fighting for third place. And with 6.1 miles to go in the elite women’s race, Joyciline Jepkosge makes her way to the front. Romanchuk is right on Hug's wheel, which isn’t really etiquette – if you’re that close, you’re meant to attack – but sport is nails and so are these lads. Sisay Lemma, though, the defending champ, looks to be labouring a little. The leading men are still bunched, Abdi and Kipruto leading the way behind two pacemakers. We’re 3.1m from home, and the is going to be some finish … But it’s Gebresilase in front as the women’s lead group drops Melly … He means to win this here and now, while behind him, Abdi and Gebresilase can’t live with the pace! Kipruto has run 2:03.13 this year, third-fastest in the world.

Results and Highlights From the 2022 London Marathon. (runnersworld.com)

The 42nd edition of the World Marathon Major didn't disappoint. Here are all the results and highlights you might have missed.

But Hug was too strong for the American; he powered away to break the tape in a new course record time of 1:24:38. Olympic Marathon Trials finisher was the first American to reach the finish line after running the majority of the race solo in a separate women’s start. Hug took the brunt of the pace until the final turn, where Romanchuk shot to the inside to attempt a pass. Just a few months after running a new personal best of 2:17:35 at Grandma’s Marathon, McCann finished 17th in 2:21:39 on Sunday. His time broke the previous masters record of 2:06:25 set by Ayad Lamdassem of Spain earlier this year. The victory is just her second 26.2 after making a historic debut at the Hamburg Marathon, where she ran 2:17:23 in April. The pacers were prescribed 1:01:45 pace to help the men crack the 2:04 barrier. The Kenyan ran 2:04:39 after breaking the race open at mile 24, which he covered in 4:36. Her victory was all but sealed around mile 24 when the broadcasters announced she split a jaw-dropping 4:43 for the mile split. The pace slowed through 10K and 15K, but the group was still within striking distance of the women’s-only world record (2:17:01) set by After the half marathon split, the top group began to shrink slightly when the pace picked up. Six months after running the fastest debut marathon ever, Yalemzerf Yehualaw won the London Marathon in 2:17:26.

2022 London Marathon: Victory for Yehaulaw and Kipruto (Runner's World (UK))

Kenya's Amos Kipruto wins the men's race, while in the women's, new Ethiopian distance star Yehaulaw won after a blistering move in the 24th mile.

The first British finisher was Weyney Ghebresilasie. Meanwhile in the men's race, the key move also happened in mile 24. It was, however, a disappointing day for Britain's top athlete, Charlotte Purdue, who had to withdraw after falling ill on Friday.

Kipruto made a move with five kilometres left and finished in two hours four minutes and 39 seconds to take his first marathon title after coming second to world record holder Eliud Kipchoge in Japan in March.

In the men’s race, Kenya’s Amos Kipruto won for the first time, finishing in two hours, four minutes and 39 seconds. The incident caused her to lose time over her rivals and later she admitted the faceplant “hurt.” But it didn’t stop the 23-year-old from making history on Sunday as she eventually crossed the line first to become the youngest winner of the London Marathon.

Yehualaw becomes youngest woman to win London Marathon ... (The Guardian)

Yalemzerf Yehualaw became the youngest woman to win the London Marathon despite tripping on a speed bump, while Amos Kipruto took the men's race.

“But the London marathon is special to me because it’s one of the first races I did in a race chair.” “I was thinking this is the day,” Kipruto said afterwards. But the longer plan I have is that I would like to next time break the world record.” The Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase was second in 2:05.12, followed by the Belgian athlete Bashir Abdi seven seconds back in third. Yehualaw, who runs for the same NN group as the men’s world champion Eliud Kipchoge, now plans a return to London in April to defend her title. A leading group of six was whittled down gradually so that with two miles remaining the race was a shootout between Yehualaw and last year’s winner Joyciline Jepkosgei.

Amos Kipruto Breaks Through With 4:21 25th Mile to Win 2022 ... (LetsRun.com)

Kipruto won his first major in grand style, ripping apart the field with one of the fastest miles in marathon history.

Yalemzerf Yehualaw throws down 4:43 23rd mile to win 2022 London.](https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=11544419)After the fastest debut in history, she now has recorded the fastest split in women’s marathon history. For the lone Kenyan in the field to beat all of the Ethiopians is a big deal. Still, Bekele, who ran with the leaders through 30k before falling back, was disappointed to take 5th in 2:05:53.](https://www.letsrun.com/kenenisa-bekele-masters-wr/) Robinson and Bideau have tried everything to solve it, including flying to Portland for new exercises in this buildup with strength coach David McHenry, but shortly after 25k (which Robinson passed on pace for 2:08:38), the pain struck again. The problem is, when Robinson gets deep into a marathon, he always develops a pain in his ribs, similar to a cramp, even though it’s something he never experiences in training. [ran 4:22 for the first mile](https://www.letsrun.com/news/2018/04/eliud-kipchoge-wins-london-20417-mother-nature-common-sense-remain-unbeatable-2/). Kipruto’s win means Kenya has now won all four World Marathon Majors so far in 2022 on the men’s side (Kipchoge won Tokyo and Berlin, Evans Chebet won Boston). However, Bekele never threw in the towel and at mile 23, he was still just seven seconds back as miles 22 and 23 were modestly run in 4:54 and 4:52. In 12 previous marathon starts, he had won just twice – his debut at 2016 Rome (2:08:12) and 2017 Seoul (2:05:54). In the end, he hung on and set a masters world record of 2:05:53, breaking the mark of 2:06:25 that Spain’s Ayad Lamdassem ran earlier this year in Seville. It was Kipruto’s first major victory in the first marathon to feature six sub-2:04 men on the start line. The runner-up ended up being a guy without a sub-2:04 pb and a guy who wasn’t even listed as an entrant on the London website before the race – 29-year-old Ethiopian Leul Gebresilase.

Yalemzerf Yehualaw Runs 4:43 24th Mile To Break Open 2022 ... (LetsRun.com)

That's not a typo people. Y2 recorded the fastest mile split in women's marathon history en route to becoming the youngest London women's winner ever.

Yalemzerf Yehualaw throws down 4:43 23rd mile to win 2022 London.](https://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=11544419)After the fastest debut in history, she now has recorded the fastest split in women’s marathon history. Back in the day, it wasn’t uncommon for the world’s best marathoners to run World XC, and that was when it was a lot closer to the spring marathon season. She set the WR for 10k on the roads earlier this year (29:14) and tried to make the Ethiopian Worlds team in the 10,000, though she was only 8th at the trials in June. That’s assuming she is named to the team (she should be – but with the Ethiopian federation, you never know). But when you fall late in a race – and 20 miles qualifies as late in a marathon – it can be hard to get back into a rhythm. It’s not uncommon for an athlete to fall early in a race and get up to win. So could a woman run a 4:48 mile in a marathon? It should be pointed out that the 24th mile in London is downhill. Amos Kipruto only split 4:36 in the men’s race for that mile and he ran 2:04:39. A 4:43 mile split in a women’s marathon? And did we mention that she did all of this after suffering a fall just after mile 20? Defending champion Joyciline Jepkosgei took second in 2:18:07 in a race where the top four broke 2:19 and top six broke 2:20.

It was down to two Kenyans Jepkosgei and Judith Korir and Yehualaw and Mergetu. Then the unthinkable happened and Yehualaw fell just as the field passed the 32km mark. Ethiopia's Ashete Bekere was in front at that point. "I was thrilled to be invited for the marathon. I wish to follow his footsteps when he retires, I take over." Yehualaw recovered from a fall to celebrate the biggest win of her career. I had the energy for the kick." He was aiming for a podium finish in London this year as several elite runners including Farah withdrew last minute. At 23, she became the youngest-ever winner as well.
