Marta Garcia secured her second W Series pole position in a rainy and red-flagged qualifying in Singapore.

As the only mum in W Series, Emma Kimilainen has a different perspective than many of her rivals. The Williams F1 development driver has more than proven herself in the all-female series and has little to gain from returning. With two W Series titles under her belt, Jamie Chadwick appears to be the perfect candidate to break into FIA Formula 3.

Marta Garcia claims W Series pole in rainy Singapore - Formula Scout (formulascout.com)

Marta Garcia took her first W Series pole of 2022 in a flooded qualifying session on Singapore's Marina Bay street circuit.

Juju Noda and Bianca Bustamante failed to lap within 110% of the pole time, meaning they will require dispensation from the stewards to race. She was able to get going again and avoided the barriers, but qualifying was red flagged shortly afterwards. The clock had ticked down to 10 minutes before the cars were allowed back on track. It was already raining when the session started, with conditions worsening throughout qualifying. Qualifying was not resumed, and Garcia claimed her first pole since the 2019 Norisring round. A spin for Belen Garcia was the first sign the standing water was getting too much for the field.

Thai racer Alexander Albon, who underwent appendicitis surgery and suffered respiratory failure from post-operative anaesthetic complications last month, failed to make it past the opening phase of qualifying. He is in the perfect place to go one better on Sunday but will have to fend off a challenge from Perez and Hamilton, who will be hunting for his first win of the season from third on the grid. "These guys are so quick but I thought with a perfect lap we could fight for first place, but I just didn't have the grip in the last lap." "I was pushing so hard, it was so, so close," said Hamilton, who missed out on a first pole of the year by just 0.054 seconds but made it into the top three for the first time this season. But the Dutchman was forced to settle for eighth on the grid after Red Bull ordered him to abort his pole shot in a major blow to his hopes of wrapping up a second successive title on Sunday with five races to spare. SINGAPORE, Oct 1 (Reuters) - Ferrari's Charles Leclerc secured pole position for the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday after a furious Max Verstappen was forced to abandon his fastest lap for fear of running out of fuel.

TEAM REPRESENTATIVES - Part One: Guenther STEINER (Haas) Frédéric VASSEUR (Alfa Romeo), Laurent MEKIES (Ferrari). Q: Fred, let's start by discussing some ...

The facts are such that the submission is made to the FIA, and it is a private submission between the team and the FIA. In terms of complexity, yeah, of course, we all agree that is simply a new dimension of the sport in Formula 1 now, dealing with the financial regulations as well, but in the end, we are all able to develop, produce and race Formula 1 cars. If that's a rule and a regulation that all the teams unanimously agreed to, then this is a rule that has to be obeyed. So, you know, I think that is it is something that the FIA can police, but inevitably there are going to be going to be learnings and we're seeing clarifications that are coming out even subsequent to when the submission has been made that could have a material impact on the actual submissions that were made back in March. But I think part of the issue was that the Safety Car went in front of Russell instead of Verstappen, I think and it was this greater bit of a mess, or at least extended the Safety Car period and now to decide if we have to put the red flag when Ricciardo’s car was stopped - I'm not in between the communication between the marshals and the race director. I mean that for sure it was a huge amount of work, probably much more for the big teams than for us but in those ones we are also smaller and I think also we have to consider the huge amount of work done by the FIA to inspect all the teams. LM: I think we know it's one of the downside of these regulations but as we are seeing, as we, the three of us, have said, we also know that there is more benefits and downsides in these regulations. we are not at the cost cap this year but the process which is put in place, it's a lot of work, but it is, I wouldn't say difficult, but you need to put the effort in. So we are fully in favour of that concept, of enforcing it as severely and as transparently as possible because it is the way forward as far as we managed to pass this stress test. This is why it's key now that we do not move the goalposts of what is allowed and what is not allowed. Also, going into the future, we know what you have to deal with, and we need to make sure that we are not watering down the budget cap for the future. And I think what we were saying yesterday is that we are very much looking forward to have clear and transparent evaluations of what has happened and that severe measures are being taken if there is a breach.

The team were very patient and disciplined in their approach, didn’t rush and assessed the situation carefully. We were at least able to get a look at full Wet and Intermediate performance. Conditions weren’t particularly intuitive, with the track appearing dry but wet in some patches and offering a very fine line between the Inter and the Soft tyre. This morning I was quite comfortable with the car, all things considered, and even my first lap in Q1, I felt better than I did at the end when the track started to dry. “It’s obviously disappointing to be out in Q1 but to be honest it’s more frustrating that it didn’t feel like the same car as we had this morning. STRATEGY GUIDE: What are the possible race strategies for the ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

Chris Medland takes a look at the different pit stop and tyre options that are available to the teams on race day at the Marina Bay Circuit…

So qualifying saw a slow improvement before enough of the track was finally ready for slick tyres, with the crossover point coming with lap times in the 1m52s. Plus, if it rains, the hard is not the ideal tyre to be on… But this will only work if a driver can overtake in order to use their pace advantage. So let’s take a look at the different options that are available to the drivers in Singapore… There hasn’t been a huge amount of dry weather running since Friday but the data is all pointing towards a one-stop strategy being the quickest route for a number of reasons. The downside is an early Safety Car period can’t be reacted to if you’ve started on the hard as it won’t be possible to make it to the end of the race on softs or mediums, so drivers would be staying out on track in the hope of a second interruption to try and make that strategy work. In this case, the inters are good for up to 30 laps and are holding up well on such a surface, and then the preferred choice will be to use soft tyres as they have the lowest working range and perform best of the slick compounds when there are still damp patches. The need for those starting on the softs to manage the pace in the first part of the race is expected to mean that starting on the hard won’t cost a huge amount in terms of lap time, ensuring anyone who does so is able to stay in touch with the pack. The latter approach also opens up the potential to take advantage of an incident and save time in the pits, as a stop under Safety Car conditions takes 15 seconds, and under Virtual Safety Car is closer to 20 seconds. [READ MORE: Hamilton back in the fight and Verstappen on the back foot – What To Watch For in the Singapore GP](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.hamilton-back-in-the-fight-and-verstappen-on-the-back-foot-what-to-watch-for.4Md8zaX4h7UuR0JFZTGAtu.html) The frontrunners get to set the pace and that means it’s likely to prove optimal for them to start on the soft compound for the opening stint (strategy 3 in the chart below) – ensuring the best performance off the line and on the opening lap in order to protect their positions on track. One is the performance of the hard compound on a long run that makes it a good race tyre, and another is the length of the pit lane.

What the teams said - Qualifying at the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

The drivers and teams report back on all the action from final practice and qualifying at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, for the Formula 1 Singapore ...

We were hoping the rain was going to make a bit of a difference today as it has in the past. Coming into this weekend we knew that it was going to be difficult for us as a team with the track being one of the least suited to our package. We have good pace to be able to challenge for points tomorrow and I am confident that we will be in the mix for the top 10.” Starting 16th is going to be a challenge, especially as this is the second hardest track on which to overtake: but you never know – this is Singapore, everything can happen and I believe in miracles!" When I was on the soft tyres in the final moments of Q2, I had to really attack on the dry parts of the lap. At the end, in Q3, I told the team that I didn’t know what we should do and to make a decision, and they made absolutely the right ones. We now look to the race, it seems to be a bit cooler again tomorrow, so hopefully that’ll help and we’re able to put it all together and finish with both cars in the points.” I always knew Qualifying was going to be tough here physically, for both me and the team, and the conditions made it even harder, but everyone did a really great job and it’s positive to have both cars up there in Quali. The longer run on slicks at the end seemed to give a good balance between having the tyres in the right window and time to learn where the grip was; the lap was looking very good but he grabbed a brake at T16 which was enough to be the difference between pole and third place. Hopefully tomorrow, we can fight for the win, but we also need to keep our expectations in check and maximise the opportunities we have in the race." As for Max, the track was ramping up and we assumed 5 laps would be the maximum we could do but as we came up to the flying lap, fuel was too close to the limit. We were very quick on the Intermediates in Q1 and Q2, then had to start again from zero on the slicks in Q3.

This afternoon, the Singapore Grand Prix will be held again for the first time since 2019. During the day on race day, it was sunny.

Thus, it is also not out of the question that a big shower may still pass over the track just before the race start. Yet a shower during the race is also quite possible as the weather turns quickly in Singapore. If the race had been Sunday afternoon (local time), the chances of a shower were very slim as the sun showed well.

Max Verstappen is driving toward a second straight series title, but Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will not let it be a simple cruise.

A hairpin at Turn 3 and slight chicane that is Turn 4 deliver the cars to another DRS zone at the exit of Turn 5. The final DRS zone comes at the exit of the hairpin at Turn 13. If close enough, drivers will be able to engage DRS after the exit of Turn 23 and use that momentum to slingshot past in a drag race down the front to the kinks at Turns 1 and 2.

If the rain stops now and the track begins to dry out before the race begins, is it a risky move onto the slicks or a safe choice of intermediates? 35 minutes to lights out: The pit lane is open and the cars make their way to the grid. Sainz also jumps Hamilton into P3 whilst Verstappen got bogged down from the off and is down to P12.2 mins to lights out: We're finally off for the formation lap ahead of the 2022 Singapore Grand Prix! Get ready for plenty of drama in this one given the conditions. Lap 3: Verstappen gets past Magnussen and then he slides down the inside of Stroll with perfect precision to move up to P10. Lap 23: Russell is the first to gamble and he's onto a medium set of tyres. Lap 5: Perez and Leclerc have already pulled out a huge lead in this race with Sainz in P3 already sitting over 5 seconds back from his teammate in P2. Lap 12: Further down the order, Verstappen gets past both Vettel and Gasly to move up to P7. Lap 44: DRS is finally enabled for the first time in this race and here comes Leclerc! Lap 35: Hamilton is in and it's a long stop given his change of front wing. Lap 51: Perez is now absolutely flying at the front of this race as he sits 2.9 seconds ahead of Leclerc. Before I've even had to chance to post that, he's past the Frenchman and now up into P9.

After a bad start that dropped him to 12th, the Dutchman winded his way through the field and was up to sixth before he got a little too anxious on cold tires in an attempt to pass Lando Norris for fifth. Or second, if a penalty over the safety car drops Perez down the field. He managed to get the gap down to less than half-a-second on Perez, and kept pressing the Mexican into making a mistake. By now the track had dried enough for drivers to slip on the slicks, and Leclerc's race seemed to come alive. The Singapore Grand Prix looked to be swinging in their direction on Saturday when Leclerc took the pole. That was dashed right at the start as Verstappen's teammate, Sergio Perez, made a bold move a soon as the track went green and snatched the lead from Leclerc on a track that was damp from rain that delayed the start.

"The bad start put us on the back foot and after that it was a really difficult race," he said. "I gave everything for the win today," added Perez who pushed hard in the closing stages to open up enough of a gap to Leclerc to cover a penalty. Instead, he now holds a 104 point lead over Leclerc and a 106 point advantage against Perez in the overall standings, with next week's race in Japan allowing him another shot at clinching a second title. "I controlled the race," said the 32-year-old, who started alongside pole-sitter Leclerc on the front row and snatched the lead from him off the line on a wet track. SINGAPORE, Oct 2 (Reuters) - Mexican Sergio Perez put in the drive of his life to take victory ahead of Charles Leclerc in Sunday's Singapore Grand Prix but his victory margin was later slashed as he collected a five-second time penalty for a safety car infringement.

The results were still unofficial as Perez met with race officials and awaited a decision on any potential penalty. Perez finished more than five seconds ahead of Leclerc, perhaps giving him the cushion he would need as he awaited word from race officials on his potential Safety Car Infringement penalty. On Lap 57, the situation changed for those three. Also coming in were the McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo, with Ricciardo making the decision to change to soft tires. He was able to quickly recover and pull back out onto the track, having lost just a single position: He was soon locked in a battle to improve his position with AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and Aston Martin’s Vettel. That night, Verstappen was involved in a significant collision with Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikköen on the lead lap. Verstappen had a few incidents during the pre-race procedures: Leclerc’s Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz joined the two on the podium, placing third.

Ferrari were hopeful about a safety car violation on Perez, but in the end it was not enough to elevate Charles Leclerc to the top step.

Sergio Pérez wins Singapore F1 GP as Max Verstappen forced to ... (The Guardian)

Sergio Pérez won for the second time this season with Charles Leclerc second, Max Verstappen seventh and Lewis Hamilton in ninth.

His tyres were shot and he was forced to pit for new rubber and emerged from fifth place in 14th at the back of the field. Yet the win he required was long gone as his teammate closed out his victory with calm assurance. Hamilton stopped, too, for a new front wing and rubber, and Verstappen followed a lap later. This was Pérez’s first win at the Singapore GP and the fourth of his career. He managed to keep going and rejoined in front of Verstappen in fifth but with a damaged front wing. He had a poor start and then dropped places trying too hard to make up a position in the latter stages, making an error that was even more costly.

The drivers and teams report back on all the action at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, for the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix 2022...

We tried giving him a fighting chance with the soft tyres, but in the end that was not enough to finish in the top ten. We had the pace, we had the pace for points and unfortunately we just got unlucky. Towards the end, the soft tyres were starting to drop and I couldn’t close in on Gasly, but I think it was a good call to try going with them in the second stint today: I don’t think any other compound would have given us a better result. In terms of the progress of our race, it was challenging with the drying conditions and we were about to enter a window where could have made the call for dry tyres before our retirements. “After all of the hard work put in by the team and drivers over the weekend, we have failed to maximise the opportunity to score good points with both cars tonight. Gasly was unlucky – he pitted before the Safety Car and that cost him a handful of positions as others were able to save some time in the pit lane. It was a very tricky race in difficult conditions, and it was hard to see the dry line appearing on the track. The asphalt took a long time to dry and timing the switch to dry tyres was critical. While we were in a good position from early in the race, in these conditions and particularly on this track, it is always tempting to jump early, switch to the slicks and try to grab even more. It was very tempting to jump on a slick and try to be a hero in the position we were in – but I think we were just sensible, bided our time and that obviously allowed an opportunity with other cars, and then a Safety Car. Overall, it was a difficult weekend to manage, but the car worked well in both the wet and the dry. Both he and everyone on his side of the garage have worked so hard and shown so much commitment this year, it makes me very happy to see his best result of the season so far.
