He has covered every Tour de France since 1992 bar one, as well as numerous other bike races of all shapes and sizes, ranging from the Olympic Games in 2008 to the now sadly defunct Subida a Urkiola hill climb in Spain. He would finish the stage in the same time as MIlan and so remains an overall contender. However the Slovenianโ€™s advantage never quite stretched far enough on the flatter segment that followed. No less than four domestiques, headed by 2021 Giro dโ€™Italia runner-up Gianpaolo Caruso, strung things out notably on the upper part of the ascent.
