At the Laver Cup, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal and Murray Make Team ... (The New York Times)

Team World has never won the cup, and now it will face the rare dream team of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and the retiring Roger Federer.

McEnroe’s uncertainty centers on the health and ages of Federer, Nadal and Murray and the lack of tournament play for Djokovic. Asked if he would play doubles with him, as he did in a win over Sock and Sam Querrey in 2017 — a match that featured a near midair collision and giggles between them — Nadal said he would jump at the chance. Murray, 35, has shown stretches of brilliance this year, notably when he beat Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios en route to the final in Stuttgart in June. More than that, we get to connect and share great ideas on court, off court, be part of something very extraordinary for our sport.” The captain of Team Europe is the six-time French Open, five-time U.S. That he chose to end competitive play at the Laver Cup, the Ryder Cup-style event that he and his management team founded in 2017 as a chummy atmosphere of star players to showcase great tennis, speaks volumes. Federer, the oldest at 41, won his first match in September 1998 just after his 17th birthday, when he beat Guillaume Raoux in Toulouse, France.

The Laver Cup is your last chance to see tennis' 'Big Three' together ... (NPR)

Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic had a three-way rivalry that made each of them better — and was awfully fun to watch.

Sure, without all three of you in the mix, maybe one of you alone would hold all 63 Grand Slam titles. People can argue back and forth why any one of you is the greatest of all time. We are all blessed to have watched all of you play against each other. (Ironically, that's the same number of Grand Slams that Pete Sampras won, before the Big Three came on the scene and obliterated his reign as the GOAT.) It's not the Olympics. It's not the NBA championship.

Friday will not be the first time Nadal and Federer find themselves on the same side of the court. The Serbian veteran played against Federer on 50 occasions. "Tomorrow is going to be a special thing," Nadal said. Now, it's hard to argue that the same can't be said about Friday's match. They played together at the very first Laver Cup in 2017, and Sock was also one of their opponents. The 20-time Grand Slam champion said he will only play one match, and that 26-year-old Matteo Berrettini from Italy will take his place for the rest of the competition.

Of course I will enjoy it, but it will be hard." "Of course it's super-special playing with Rafa," Federer said. Federer won eight Wimbledon titles, six Australian Opens, five US Opens and one French Open title, dominating men's tennis for many years. Roger Federer's emotional farewell brings down the house | News ... (Laver Cup)

Roger Federer brought the curtain down on his illustrious career in an emotion-packed Friday night session at London's O2 Arena, finishing his final match ...

Three times he and Nadal were two points from victory – at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second set and 8-8 in the match tiebreak – and they moved to within a point of victory at 9-8. “It does feel like a celebration,” he told the crowd, “it’s what I wanted it to be, so thank you. The match itself was the perfect way for Federer to go out. In the third game he moved for a forehand down the line and threaded it through the tiny gap between the net post and the net. It ended two-and-a-quarter hours later with Sock wrong-footing Nadal with a forehand up the alley, but from then on the American pair took a back seat as the show belonged to Federer. But Friday’s story was all about Federer and the final chapter of a career that signs him off him as one of the greatest athletes in the history of sport, not just tennis.

Matteo Berrettini reporting for duty | Laver Cup (Laver Cup)

Matteo Berrettini is an especially handy alternate for Team Europe at Laver Cup London 2022.

“Watching them as a kid, I was cheering for them,” Berrettini says of the Big Four. “It’s one of the most historical cities we have for tennis, and not only for tennis,” says Berrettini, who got his first taste of Laver Cup action last year in Boston. “Probably one of the best things about these things is that everyone is so different from each other,” says the world No.15. The O2 Arena, I love that arena, and I’m sure it is going to be great to play there. Team World’s only point during the weekend, however, came when John Isner and Denis Shapovalov defeated Berrettini and Alexander Zverev in doubles in another Laver Breaker to end Day 1. The team is unbelievable.”
