Can Hollywood BeReal? Paramount Would 'Scream' Yes (TheWrap)

Paramount Pictures is leading the way as the first studio to use social media app BeReal for a film marketing campaign for "Scream 6."

“It doesn’t make sense for us from a branding perspective to spend ad dollars to be able to be in the Discover setting of the app.” “We want to have a strategy behind it,” the insider said. “There’s a lot of earned media potential right now, especially with the app being new,” she said. This exclusive content, however, is only available to BeReal users who are “friends” with the film’s account (@screammovies, in this case). “We always strive to utilize new platforms and nascent technology in our marketing and executed a series of first-to-market initiatives on the last ‘Scream’ campaign,” Danielle De Palma, EVP of Global Marketing at Paramount Pictures, told TheWrap. The photo-sharing app alerts users once a day, at an unknown time, to “be real” and post a photo within two minutes. The second known “Scream”-related BeReal post, taken Aug. Starring “In the Heights” breakout Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Hayden Panettiere all star in the new film, which wrapped production last week. BeReal users may post outside the allotted two minutes, but the post will be considered “late” and display how long it was delayed. And while the savvy digital-marketing squad at Paramount found a clever way to get “Scream 6” some traction on its BeReal account, most studios aren’t ready to mess with a platform bent on filtering out staged social media. But that didn’t stop Paramount, a leader in innovative digital marketing going back to the mid-2000s. The exec who spoke on background said their team isn’t yet sure how to use BeReal as a marketing tool — and that’s exactly how the French app wants it.

As a company, we know we aren’t perfect, nor do we have all the answers on this journey to write the next chapter of inclusive storytelling. Taken together, we hope that the release of our analysis and expanded commitments will help us accelerate the change we’ve long worked towards at Paramount. With over 100,000 members from underrepresented groups, our hope is that this partnership will contribute to the changing infrastructure of Hollywood. The training is now set to scale across the rest of Paramount globally, beginning with Nickelodeon in 2023 and expanding companywide through 2024. Leading with this research, we aim to build on our legacy of work to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion, including the commitments we’ve made as a company historically—and more recently as part of Content for Change. Secondly, we are committing to commissioning 8 new insights studies across 2022 and 2023 including a follow up study with Annenberg, and the groundbreaking work with BET and Stanford that will offer an industry view of representation and portrayals in content. Job seekers will be directly invited to apply for below-the-line and above-the-line open positions on the platform thus expanding visibility and outreach efforts to create true equity and diversity in hiring practices. Specifically, Paramount will be broadening our infrastructure of data analytics in partnership with our production teams by building a new companywide technology solution to track the demographics of our in-front and behind-the-camera talent and pipeline. Most importantly, this will lead to informed and data-driven commitments that will help increase representation and more accurate portrayals of BIPOC and underrepresented groups in our content. And of course, we are so excited about Paramount’s recent pledge to the Roybal School of Film and Television Production Fund (Roybal Fund) in support of their mission to build a more inclusive pipeline of historically underrepresented, college and career ready students interested in the film and television industries. Building on the brands’ and studios’ longstanding efforts to broaden our creative talent pool with programs such as the ViewFinder Emerging Directors Program, Directing Initiative, Writers Mentoring Program, First Time Directors, and SHOWCASE, Paramount will be expanding The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative analyzed the makeup of Paramount’s on-screen talent as well as our creators, producers, writers, and directors from 62 Paramount series from ten brands over a two-year period from 2019-2021 that were selected by internal brand and research leadership.

Many of the stars and producers believe they are going to miss out on millions of dollars because of a deal between Paramount and the cable channel Epix.

Paramount is best known as a movie studio, and yet none of its new movies would be available on its flagship streaming service for years to come. Paramount’s Epix deal expires at the end of 2023. Movie stars, producers and film-makers often get a cut of the profits from their movies, including a share of digital sales and licensing to third parties. While these companies hoped that Epix would turn into a viable player, it never reached the stature of HBO, Showtime or Starz. Streaming services typically do not license their original movies to others at all. The guilds declined to comment.
