Elton John bids farewell to Pittsburgh in final Steel City performance (TribLIVE)

It seems we've been down this Yellow Brick Road before. Elton John brought his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road, The Final Tour” to PNC Park in Pittsburgh Friday ...

Eventually, and reluctantly, John would have to acknowledge the old clock on the wall, which was moving toward 10:30 p.m. Elton then appeared on the piano in a baby blue suit with black velvet trim, a white ruffled shirt and a flock of diamonds crowded onto his cuffs. Then things calmed way down with the obligatory “Candle in the Wind,” accompanied by a rotten video featuring a cheesy actress trying to play Marilyn Monroe. John sounded like he did in his prime as he belted it out. It was stretched out to allow John time for a costume change. He followed up with a version of “Levon” that made it feel like we were thrust into a revival meeting. John made sure to point out that Bissonette’s son Josh plays minor league baseball for the Pirates. There was plenty of power in John’s voice as he sang it and it included a brilliantly evocative guitar solo by Davey Johnstone. The front-rows fans never sat down while John never took his foot off the gas, bringing high energy and strong, wide ranging vocals to the performance along with his usual pristine piano playing. We could not believe it,” John told the crowd. Next up was “Philadelphia Freedom,” the song he wrote for his friend, tennis star Billie Jean King. John didn’t need to win over his exuberant fans but, perhaps in an effort to do that, he came onto the stage at 8:05 p.m.

Elton John goes out with a bang at last Pittsburgh show (The Times)

Elton John played all the hits in his final ever Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania show, at PNC Park.

He and the band took a backstage breather, letting realistic sounding thunder effects begin the 10-minute-plus, prog-gothic "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." Elton told the story of how Franklin, in her waning months, rallied to deliver a show-stopping performance at one of his AIDS charity benefits. And I will take you with me in my heart and my soul and my head and I will never forget you." Elton didn't sing note-for-note recreations of his singles − where's the fun in that? And I'm going to spend time with my children and my husband and I'm going to have a great time. It was the tour's third year in Pittsburgh, and would be his final Pennsylvania performance, the megawatt superstar told his Pittsburgh audience.

One song later, “Burn Down the Mission,” the band was off on another thrilling jam with Elton chanting “Burn it down! A solo piano version of “Candle in the Wind,” once again, came with images of Marilyn Monroe, and was paired with “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding,” starting with a crackling thunderstorm track (that must have sounded real in the neighborhood) before the band rolled in and hit it hard with the prog-rock intro that was nothing short of majestic. Started on solo piano, it was a lovely sing-along with cellphones flickering around the stadium. “You can imagine how we felt being two kids from Britain with the Queen of Soul recording your song,” he said of himself and lyricist Bernie Taupin. I’m gonna spend time with my children, and my husband, and I’m going to have a good time. It was clear early on when he skipped the “Bennie! I wish you health, love and prosperity.” Burn it down!” with flames all over the screen. John has released eight albums since then, but everything in the set list — save the new mashup with Dua Lipa — came from the ‘70s and ‘80s. John is managing to run around the backhand, as they say, without that, but he got stronger and stronger as the set wore on. Yes, the second use of that word but it’s hard to find one that better describes much of this show. She was murdered in the Parkland shooting.
