Juventus' Serie A match with Salernitana on Sunday evening at the Allianz Stadium ended in complete mayhem. Salternitana led 2-0 at hallf-time.

“I can compliment the lads for the performance in the second half. “We had never gone down until today and I wanted to see the reaction. At least we prepare for the Champions League game with a draw and not a defeat so the mood is different. We had several shots on targets in the opening 20 minutes and other favourable situations. “The reaction in the second half was great,” Allegri continued. It can happen to go down, but you can’t lose the order. “The only thing is that I’d like to watch the video again. We have 10-15 good referees in Italy.” “The performance of the second half was good. “We should have gone to the break down to one goal, but we conceded a penalty kick in the stoppages. Antonio Candreva is close to the corner and we haven’t seen that video, what if he keeps everyone onside? But Juventus battled back in the second half at the Allianz Stadium.

Juventus pushed for an equaliser, but struggled to break down Salernitana's defence before the break. JUVENTUS were 2-0 down to Salernitana but the perfect comeback was spoiled by VAR...

But that only tells half of the story as card-happy referee Matteo Marcenaro issued FOUR red cards in the aftermath of the unmissable carnage in Turin... Juve boss Allegri was next to see red for his heated antics on the touchline as he urged the officials to regain control of proceedings after a prolonged break in play. Arkadiusz Milik - a summer arrival from Marseille - then glanced home what he thought was a stunning winner with virtually the last kick of the game from a corner to send the Juventus Stadium into raptures. Yet the drama was only just getting started as Juventus went in search of a much-needed victory - despite seemingly salvaging a point in stoppage time. It was the underdogs who led the game 2-0 at half-time courtesy of goals from Antonio Candreva and Krzysztof Piatek as the away side stunned the hosts on a night when they were feeling the heat on home soil. Juventus' troublesome start to the 2022/23 season continued after the Old Lady were denied a 94th-minute winner against Salernitana after coming back from 2-0 down to win the game in stoppage time - only for VAR to disallow the goal for offside.

Despite conceding a goal in the second half, the promoted side finally scored the first point of the season but the position of coach Giovanni Stroppa is still in danger. Udinese are currently fourth in the league, only one point behind the three leaders of the Serie A table. The striker already scored four goals in the first six matches of the season. It was not a good game at all in terms of their display, but the final result give some new hope to the fans, especially after the draws of Atalanta and Napoli. Arek Milik scored the third goal of the night in stoppage time, but then the referee called the goal off after the VAR check ruled Bonucci offside. Why 4 Red Cards, A VAR Scandal And A Point Saved Can't ... (Forbes)

Despite all the drama, what was once again on full display is the inescapable fact that Max Allegri is simply not delivering results.

In doing so, he has turned Wednesday’s clash with the Portuguese giants a publicly held test of his ability to deliver results. Allegri has spoken repeatedly about the young players in the squad, yet only 19-year-old Fabio Miretti falls into that category, and it was 34-year-old Cuadrado who made the key error. But as Milik made his way off the pitch, the video assistant referee told the on-field official that he needed to review a possible offside against Bonucci because VAR can only make objective decisions and there was a subjective call to be made on whether the Juve skipper was interfering with play. Indeed, Candreva was cast off by Sampdoria this past summer, Fazio by AS Roma, Krzysztof Piątek is on loan from Hertha Berlin after Fiorentina turned down the chance to sign him following a spell there last season. Then Candreva scored following a horrendous error from Cuadrado, and suddenly Juve fell to pieces. I don't like being 'pretty' and not winning." Gleison Bremer’s powerful header gave them hope and then, as Leonardo Bonucci slotted home the rebound after his penalty effort was saved by Luigi Sepe, the belief at Juventus Stadium skyrocketed. According to To see such a side come to Turin and be so well organised, to play with such conviction and belief is a huge testament to the work of Davide Nicola, a vastly underrated Coach who constantly gets the most from every player at his disposal. To go behind in a match, even against the run of play, is simply part of the game. Make no mistake, this was a side who dominated Juve for an extended period and who – like PSG before them – were unfortunate not to be much further ahead as they headed to the changing rooms at the break. Heard shouted from the stands, emblazoned on scarves and shirts, it translates into English as “until the end” and is the unofficial motto of Juventus, a clarion call to never stop fighting until the final whistle is blown.

But is 55-year-old Allegri, who was away from football for two years before rejoining the club last summer, too out of touch to make Juventus competitive again? After the Queen spoke to him and moved on to the next in the line, he called after her: ‘Excuse me your Majesty …’ Jaws dropped all round and an awkward silence ensued as the assembled waited to see what would happen next. You don’t often get things wrong (he lied, trying to curry a favourable reaction) but, may I be just one of thousands of Leeds United pedants and pensioners who distinctly remember Queen Elizabeth II handing over the FA Cup to Billy Bremner at the end of the Centenary Cup final in 1972. So 1996 wasn’t her first football match after 1966” – John Delucchi (and thousands of other Leeds United pedants and pensioners). “I recall the late comedian Tom O’Connor telling a wonderful story about the Queen going down the line after a Royal Variety show at which he was present. Among the flurry of feet stamped and arms raised in indignation from the cloud of the ensuing cartoon fistfight, a lone hand of increasingly diminishing authority could occasionally be seen repeatedly brandishing a red card. But with Salernitana’s gutted players preparing to kick off, referee Matteo Marcenaro was advised by the curtain-twitchers at Parco di Stocklioni to adjourn to his monitor and check for a possible offside by Bonucci, just as Milik had headed goalwards. With many of their fans having already exited in disgust, Leonardo Bonucci, 73, displayed agility and sprightliness unbecoming of a man of his years, to acrobatically turn home the rebound to a penalty originally saved by Salernitana keeper Luigi Sepe. To Turin, then, where out-of-sorts and struggling Juventus were on the brink of an embarrassing home defeat to Plucky Little Salernitana, trailing 2-1 in the third minute of added time. With games on the continent taking place as usual, there were no shortage of options to put the VAR-related omnishambles of the Premier League behind them, watching matches from various leagues where it is always implemented correctly and quickly, despite there being no real need for it because foreign officials are all famously so much better than their English counterparts.

Juventus will travel to Monza with a depleted squad - (JuveFC)

Max Allegri's squad will be depleted for the trip to Brianza, with the manager himself banned from the touchline following his dismissal yesterday.

And to make matters more complex, the squad will be missing a host of players. Juan Cuadrado took part in the melee that ensued, and received a red card for his role in it. The Polish striker will also miss the encounter against Monza after earning a second yellow card for taking off his jersey during the celebration of his later-disallowed goal.

Premier League pause, Real Madrid and Barcelona in form, VAR ... (ESPN Australia)

The Premier League postponed matches while Barcelona and Real Madrid earned key wins. At Juve, VAR may have cost points. It's ESPN's weekend review.

Allegri also made some questionable choices again, such as taking off [Filip Kostic](https://www.espn.com.au/football/player/_/id/174496/Filip-Kostic) when he was Juve's best player. [Brest](/football/team?id=6997) was not a great game, and was the kind of match that is easily forgotten. However, Juventus drawing at home on Sunday to lowly [Salernitana](/football/team?id=3240) on Serie A play while being denied a late winner by VAR in a chaotic end is something else. [RB Leipzig](/football/team?id=11420) were finished and Borussia Dortmund were looking every bit a contender after four one-goal wins in five Bundesliga games? Until Wednesday, their season had been really good with our wins and a draw in Ligue 1 to start the new campaign, new signing (but in his second stint) [Alexandre Lacazette](https://www.espn.com.au/football/player/_/id/131752/Alexandre-Lacazette) hitting the ground running straight away and manager Peter Bosz enjoying a few weeks with less pressure and less question marks over his future and his inability to take this team to the next level. With Mallorca a goal up and the half-time whistle imminent, the Uruguayan scored a brilliant solo effort to equalise. [Sunday's 4-1](/football/spanish-laliga/story/4743783/valverderodrygo-prove-too-much-as-real-madrid-made-to-work-for-win-by-mallorca) win over [Mallorca](/football/team?id=84) was an answer of sorts. [AS Monaco](/football/team?id=174), but we didn't see it. [Real Madrid](/football/team?id=86), [Barcelona](/football/team?id=83) and [Paris Saint-Germain](/football/team?id=160) take care of business in their respective league matches. [Lorient](/football/team?id=273) on Wednesday evening looked like a trap but Lyon were still favorites and they crashed down badly with a 3-1 loss. Now the pressure is back on him, as it was back in January. [Teams in trouble](#trouble)

UEFA Champions League bold predictions: Chelsea start slow ... (CBSSports.com)

It might have been less than a week since the Champions League began, but already it feels like we are entering a critical period of the competition.

In Graham Potter Boehly believes he has something more like a partner, a coach bound to Chelsea for the long haul, one who will be eager to have a say in how the club works off the pitch as well as how the players perform on it. "The thing for me, right now is that Liverpool play a high-risk game, but they're not pressing the ball to stop that high-risk game and it's causing them the problem. The former would propose dropping that Liverpool line back by five yards, giving opponents less space to attack in behind but equally making it easier for them to build play from the back, robbing the Reds of that quick route to goal that has allowed them to score so many in recent years. It is as though the orchestra has lost not just its conductor but its first chair violin, its double bass and a few from the woodwind section. Speaking after the 4-1 loss Klopp acknowledged that same issue of a lack of intensity at the start of the press. "This is a problem for Liverpool - the high line and that they aren't actually getting pressure on the ball," said the former Reds defender. Once Vlahovic takes a step onto his right foot ready to take his shot those potential options have dwindled to just Kean, stood in a position where he might be open for a pass but not one that is conducive to increasing the threat level of the attack. It is hard to know exactly how much store to place in the Portuguese giants run of 11 wins from 11 to start the new season. In Serie A they might have a goal difference of plus five but in terms of xG they are no better in attack than they are in defense. Behind him are four Juventus players including the US international and Moise Kean, they'd have ground to make up but it is hardly as if the No.9 is entirely on his own when the pass is played. Allegri's side is one devoid of creativity -- at least partly down to injuries suffered by Paul Pogba, Angel Di Maria and Federico Chiesa -- that asks Dusan Vlahovic to not just score the goals himself but to beat three or four men in the process. By the end of this week a third of the group stages will be concluded.
