Apple collections include iconic imagery from Apple; Pride and Unity wallpapers; a Weather wallpaper to see live weather conditions as they change throughout the day; and an Astronomy wallpaper for views of the Earth, moon, and solar system. New widgets on the Lock Screen make it easy to get helpful information at a glance like upcoming calendar events, battery levels, alarms, time zones, Activity ring progress, and more.

Apple iOS 16 review: unlocking the lock screen (The Verge)

Apple's latest iPhone software comes with tweaks and upgrades everywhere, including to apps like Messages and Mail. But the biggest change is on the lock ...

It is clearly invested in turning the iPhone into more than just a collection of apps; it wants the phone to be lively and interactive and to get you what you need without requiring you to enter into somebody else’s universe. (The business and antitrust implications of that thinking are complicated and fascinating and not for this review.) I like the idea that my iPhone has all my stuff and the wherewithal to show it to me in the right places without me having to go looking for it. The iPhone’s just going to keep getting a little better every year for a lot of years to come. [Apple’s full change log](https://www.apple.com/ios/ios-16/features/) is hilariously long.) In all, the changes do make the phone noticeably more functional and easier to use. A quick search is still the fastest way to find an app or a contact, and it’s even a halfway decent way to search through your emails and texts.) And in the few places I could test passkeys, snapping photos of QR codes to authenticate to my device, it worked well in iOS 16. You can also now dictate and type at the same time, which is a bit confusing if you accidentally brush the mic button without realizing it and suddenly your text field is filled with background chatter the mic picked up. [starting on September 12th](https://www.theverge.com/2022/9/7/23319856/apple-ios-16-ipados-release-date-features)) is filled with improvements and changes to practically every app and screen on the iPhone. Outside of Apple occasionally pretending it invented decade-old software tricks, this is the right strategy: most users don’t want to download tons of apps or learn new things, and the more functional the iPhone is out of the box, the better it’ll be for most people. And when you pair it with the always-on displays on the iPhone 14 Pro, the iPhone becomes a fountain of useful information without requiring a single tap. And so, part of the idea with its new smartphone software is that there might be ways for your smartphone to be useful without you having to use it so much. My weekend lock screen is a photo of my dog, and every time I see it, something in my brain goes “get off your phone and go outside.”

iOS 16—Brilliant New iPhone Features Available Now (Forbes)

Rapid Security Response · Passkeys · Unsend Messages · Lockdown Mode · Safety Check · In short · Apple launches iOS 16—and iOS 15.7.

I’ve already updated to iOS 16, but I am prepared for a few bugs in order to be able to try out the cool new features. But take note—the iOS 15.7 update is an important one, as it fixes 11 security issues, one of which is being used by adversaries in real-life attacks on iPhones. Two issues fixed in WebKit, the engine that powers Safari, could lead to code execution, Apple says on its support page. This could leave many people complaining of bugs, or worse, refusing to update and leaving themselves open to big security problems. Among the benefits, Apple’s solution to obliterate the password makes it hard for you to become a victim of phishing and keeps your credentials safe from website leaks. Safety Check is a useful privacy feature available in iOS 16 aimed at those who may be at risk from a controlling or abusive partner. Users can make up to five edits to a given message—although be aware that recipients will be able to see a record of this. Apple says Lockdown Mode provides “extreme protection for the very small number of users who face grave, targeted threats to their digital security.” The latest iPhone software comes with a bunch of brilliant new features that will be game-changing for your security and privacy. Apple fans have been asking for the ability to unsend messages for some time, and with iOS 16 the iPhone maker has finally launched this feature. Fearing iPhone bugs, many Apple users are left to decide between security and functionality when a new iOS version comes out. “Now your iPhone will get important security improvements between normal software updates, so you automatically stay up to date and protected against security issues,” Apple says.

iOS 16 now available: Lock Screen customization, iMessage edit ... (9to5Mac)

Table of contents · New Lock Screen customization options · New iMessage features: Undo send and editing messages · Privacy and security in iOS 16 · Notifications ...

While features like Lock Screen Customization and editing/unsending iMessages will undoubtedly be the “viral” features of iOS 16, there are a ton of other changes that improve the iPhone experience this year. The update also includes a number of other improvements and changes. The new Home app is designed to make it easier to navigate, organize, view, and control all your accessories. Similarly, you can now undo and redo multiple edits in your photos. Dictation in iOS 16 allows you to easily switch between voice and touch. Passwords are one of the weakest links in digital security today and Apple is adopting the new passkey standard in its effort to move on. As first announced by Apple way back in May, there are a host of new Accessibility features in iOS 16. iOS 16 also includes some notable updates to Apple’s voice-powered Siri and Dictation features. Apple has also redesigned the notifications system in iOS 16, particularly on the Lock Screen. You can choose to install iOS 16 immediately or have it installed overnight while your iPhone is charging. You can then update to iOS 16 with just a few taps. You can also customize which people and apps can access your information.
