The Casual LOTR Fan's Guide to Rings of Power's “Adar” (Slate Magazine)

Who's … Adar? Can you refresh me on Númenor and Isildur? And since when are orcs vampires?

While it won’t make them turn to stone, like the trolls in The Hobbit, orcs are not a fan of sunshine, although it’s not entirely clear or consistent in the books just how debilitating it is to them. In The Rings of Power, the One Ring hasn’t yet been created, but when it is created, Isildur will be the one to defeat Sauron and cut it off his finger. As Galadriel realizes in this episode, Sauron’s symbol is actually a map—a map of what we’ll come to know as Mordor, imitating the shape of the mountain ranges around Mount Doom. When Númenor is destroyed, Isildur takes a cutting from the tree to replant it later. Númenor is an island to the west of Middle-earth. Remember: The Lord of the Rings takes place in Middle-earth in the Third Age, but [The Rings of Power takes place thousands of years earlier, in the Second Age](https://slate.com/culture/2022/09/lord-rings-power-amazon-elrond-tolkien-movies-elves.html).

Isildur And Eärien's Brother From The Rings Of Power Episode 3 Is ... (Looper)

Here's why Isildur and Eärien's brother Anarion may play a key part in the narrative of "The Rings of Power" Season 1, Episode 3.

In the appendices to "The Return of the King," we see the event pop up again a few times, but it laconically says things like "Anárion slain" or "Anárion who was slain before the Barad-dûr." [Second Age](https://www.looper.com/183861/lord-of-the-rings-second-age-of-middle-earth-explained/), Isildur and Anárion join their father and Gil-galad, who form the Last Alliance of Elves and Men in an attempt to overthrow Sauron once and for all. While there aren't a lot of details about Anárion, there's no doubt that the future king has an important role in Tolkien's original story. During a catastrophic event called the Akallabêth, which also goes by the foreboding title "The Downfall of Númenor," Elendil and his two sons escape from their island nation and flee to Middle-earth, literally riding a title wave. Papa Elendil ends up way in the north, near the Elvish king Gil-galad in Lindon, where he founds the kingdom of Arnor. The apparently grueling test will decide whether or not he's ready to join the Númenórean navy — a career path that his father Elendil, who is a captain of his own ship, is already fully committed to.

Right now, Elendil seems happy to continue flying under the radar of Númenor’s leadership, but that won’t last forever. Their lives in Númenor were only briefly outlined by Tolkien, which means The Rings of Power has been tasked with finding new ways for the two characters to grow into the heroic figures they’re destined to become. Isildur was also born in Númenor and, like his father, grew to become a prominent member of the Faithful. Based on where we meet Isildur and Elendil, it looks like viewers will see some of Isildur’s more heroic acts. Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) are escorted to the [iconic Second Age location](https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/rings-of-power-second-age-timeline) early in Episode 3 by Elendil (Lloyd Owen), a character who will be very familiar to all the devoted Tolkien readers out there. When we meet him, he seems to be little more than just one of the city’s many naval captains.

Elendil’s legacy as one of the Faithful who evaded his kingdom’s destruction, was the union of two realms of Men, Arnor and Gondor, becoming their first king and ruler of the surviving Númenóreans in Middle-earth. Elendil, who fought and died alongside Elven high-king Gil-Galad while carrying out the Siege of Barad-dûr, and wielded Narsil, the famed First Age sword forged by Telchar of Nogrod, saw his defeat at the hands of Sauron, only to be avenged by his son. Introduced in The Rings of Power in episode 3, Elendil and Isildur are pivotal characters who were instrumental in defending Middle-earth against Sauron in the War of the Last Alliance which ended the Second Age in the original Tolkien mythology.

'The Rings of Power' Introduced the Legendary Isildur — Who Plays ... (Showbiz Cheat Sheet)

TL;DR: The Rings of Power Episode 3 introduces Aragorn's ancestor, Isildur. Isildur is played by actor Maxim Baldry in The Lord of the Rings prequel.

[Variety](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UzMiuRipt4) about his role as Isildur in The Rings of Power. But Isildur promises to be one of the more intriguing characters in Amazon’s prequel series. “He’s at a bit of a crossroads,” the actor told Variety. And The Rings of Power Episode 3 introduces Isildur, a character so pivotal that [the Lord of the Rings movies](https://www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/where-stream-lord-of-the-rings-movies.html/) open with him. That longing for “the other” may be precisely what leads Isildur to the One Ring. Baldry has appeared in a number of other projects over the past couple of decades — though probably none as massive as the Lord of the Rings prequel. [The Lord of the Rings](https://www.cheatsheet.com/tag/the-lord-of-the-rings/): The Rings of Power is introducing a number of characters original to the Prime Video series, but it’s also digging into well-known names from J.R.R. “There’s definitely a weight of expectation, knowing where your character is going,” Baldry admitted. [IMDb](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2360755/), he’s also made brief appearances on shows like Skins and Doctor Who. Episode 3 introduces a young version of the character, one who’s still grappling with what he wants for the future — and how it fits in with his father’s plans. Like many of the characters in this franchise, he’s clearly multifaceted. So, who exactly is Baldry — and where might viewers recognize him from?

Isildur's Sister Exemplifies The Rings Of Power's Changes To LOTR (Screen Rant)

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power debuted one of its biggest changes to the source material in episode 3: Isildur's sister Eärien. Earien Numenor Rings ...

One thing that makes Eärien's inclusion in The Rings of Power even more intriguing is her status as an original character. As Elendil's family is of the utmost importance to Númenor's future (or lack thereof), having Eärien around to give a different perspective to what is known from Tolkien's work can only be beneficial to The [Rings of Power, ](https://screenrant.com/king-halbrand-southlands-rings-of-power-episode-3/) [as evident by episode 3.](https://screenrant.com/king-halbrand-southlands-rings-of-power-episode-3/) [Lord of the Rings'](https://screenrant.com/lord-rings-isildur-sauron-fight-movie-change-heroic/) [ infamous Isildur](https://screenrant.com/lord-rings-isildur-sauron-fight-movie-change-heroic/). It is in this scene that The Rings of Power justifies its creation of Eärien as a character, as it begins to showcase just how she can be utilized by the writers of the series. However, it is in Elendil's youngest child and Isildur's sister, Eärien, that The Rings of Power exemplifies the changes made to the world of Middle-earth. [The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power](https://screenrant.com/tag/the-rings-of-power/) just showcased its willingness to change elements from the source material by introducing another original character for the series: Eärien, Isildur's sister.
