In recent years, a few actors have played the Queen onscreen – they all cite it as an especially difficult role. The Crown - Elizabeth - Elizabeth at Prince ...

The next Queen we see on screen will come courtesy of Staunton, whose run in The Crown was due to begin in November – although whether this will go ahead in light of the Queen’s death remains to be seen. In her interview with the Guardian, Colman perhaps put the bind of being an actor playing the Queen at its simplest. She said in the same Variety interview that the Queen was “very challenging as a person for me to play because we’re not massively similar – vocally, physically. The Queen, like The Crown, was written by Peter Morgan, and as with individual episodes of The Crown, it zooms in on a particular moment in the monarch’s reign – in this case, the aftermath of the death of Princess Diana. Otherwise, Foy had to conceive of the Queen on a more personal level. Colman also praised the production itself for aiding her transformation: “We had amazing hair and makeup departments – you’ve done half your job before you even step out of your van.”

It’s not even the nudity that bothers me – it’s just that so many of the contestants on this dating show are clearly very vulnerable. But once I’d overcome my irritation, I have to say I really started to enjoy this, largely due to the presence of Fatima Whitbread (left) and one or two others, including reality TV star Pete Wicks. Sort of a style over substance thing, but in a good way. And while the costumes and settings are sumptuous enough to keep the eye entertained and distract from such minor details, the script is less than inspiring (even though it’s written by Nigel Williams, who wrote Mirren’s brilliant 2005 Elizabeth I). No doubt it has something to do with the fact we live in such dreary, uninspiring times that we are so ineffably drawn to tales of nobility and adventure. So something of a quiet triumph there for the feminists, and beautifully executed by Mirren, who’s every bit as seductive as any fresh-faced, firm-fleshed starlet.

Mourners around the world are expressing their condolences and paying homage to the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II.

In her time, the Queen saw a country and indeed a world transformed. In my childhood I can recall watching her wedding highlights on TV. “For the whole of my life, the Queen has been the constant anchor of not just Britain and her beloved Commonwealth, but an inspiration to the world for her lifetime of service. “So saddened by the loss of our Queen. I am honoured and blessed to have witnessed her reign.” Queen Elizabeth has been a huge part of my life from childhood to this day, and I will miss her dearly.”

The 11-year-old delivered a powerful performance in the Oscar-winning film about King George VI's ascension to the throne. Almost a decade later she reprised her role as the royal from her younger years to the present day by performing in The Audience on Broadway. Intruder Michael Fagan sneaked into the palace and managed to find his way into her bedroom, sitting on her bed where they chatted for ten minutes. "You're thinking 'it's the Queen, it's the Queen'," she said, when asked what it was like to meet the real-life royal. Speaking about researching the role, she explained to Harper's Bazaar: "I can't just sit like me, I have to sit like her, and look like pictures of her. "I think my sort of extra challenge, as if I needed it, is that I'm now doing the Queen that we're a little more familiar with," she said. Imelda Staunton is yet to make her debut as the Queen in The Crown season five, but it has been confirmed that viewers can expect to see the new series land in November 2022. The role of [Britain's](https://www.thequint.com/topic/britain) longest-reigning figurehead has been marked with prestige and aplomb, both in reel and real life. Since Sarah Gadon was one of the first actors to play a younger Queen Elizabeth II, she voiced her insecurities about the portrayal. In true The Crown fashion, the show replaces the key actors every two seasons, to present an authentic portrayal of the monarchy aging over the years. In honor of her demise, here's looking back at 14 actors who portrayed the Queen on screen:
