Hello and welcome to The Athletic's live coverage of this Europa League game between FC Zurich and Arsenal. The north London side are returning to European ...
Being in the Europa League is something of a booby-prize for Arsenal. Well, there are plenty of talking points that have arisen as a result of the team news. For those of you who don't already know, Arsenal will not be travelling to FC Zurich's Stadion Letzigrund this evening. Although, Arteta will be keen to manage his minutes ahead of the World Cup. The Romanian has also been entrusted by Arteta with a place on the bench this evening. So, does that make the Europa League an unnecessary distraction or a chance of more silverware? While many still don't feel Arteta's side are prepared to mount a meaningful title challenge, qualifying for the Champions League will certainly be the main aim. We have quite a lot of injuries as well and a small squad so it's important that everybody's at it and can perform to the highest level." They can certainly make amends for their struggles with a strong showing in the Europa League. The other teams drawn in Group A are also set to do battle in a few minutes' time. It's been a very pedestrian start to proceedings but that will suit Arsenal down to the ground. The north London side are returning to European competition after a year's absence, while Zurich have not played continental since the 2018-19 season.
Arsenal kick off their 2022/23 Europa League campaign with a Group A opener away at Swiss side FC Zurich on September 8.

Marquinhos kicked off his Arsenal career in style as he scored one goal and set up another in his team's 2-1 win at FC Zurich in their Europa League Group A ...
Marquinhos scored on his debut but Zürich's Mirlind Kryeziu equalised from the penalty spot before Eddie Nketiah's header gave Arsenal a 2-1 win.
It was Marquinhos, showing shades of Bukayo Saka in his ability to maraud inside and deliver accurately, who picked him out and the far-post header was planted firmly past Brecher. They began to threaten sporadically before the interval, Kieran Tierney throwing himself at Ole Selnæs’s shot, but it was still a surprise when they levelled. They then watched their team rediscover their dominance, Martinelli seeing a shot headed away by Kryeziu before Tierney and Nketiah came close. Nketiah had been released down the left by Fábio Vieira, who was making his first start, but his delivery needed to be perfect if Marquinhos was to have a clear chance. The Swiss champions, playing 40 miles from home due to a double-booking with a Diamond League athletics meeting, were vociferously backed but offered modest opposition. In the period after conceding they found any kind of possession a luxury; Arsenal were dominant and Vieira, pulling the strings, lobbed on to the roof of the net.
Eddie Nketiah's second-half winner gave Arsenal a 2-1 victory over FC Zurich to begin their 2022-23 Europa League Group A campaign on Thursday night.

[Gabriel Jesus](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/217289/Gabriel-Jesus), NR -- A nice, low effort in the 87th minute was the highlight of a brief cameo for the star forward. Alas, he had to make better adjustments in the face of Zurich's smothering tactics, and his plan of holding out on substitutions with the hope that they retook the lead paid off . Mikel Arteta, 7 -- He began the game with a strong blend of experience and young talent in his starting XI and that seemed to pay off, as they played composed attacking football for long spells. [Fabio Vieira](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/88865/Fabio-Vieira), 7 -- Showcased his physicality on multiple occasions and made a swift pass out from the back that led to the opener. [Granit Xhaka](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/149981/Granit-Xhaka), 7 -- The midfield maestro was calm in possession, a physical leader and determined to help carve out opportunities in the middle of the park. That feeling was reignited upon the equaliser hitting the back of the net with defensive tension being evident, mainly under the threat of not wanting to let such a narrow lead slip. [Marquinhos](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/297070/marquinhos), 9 -- With 52 touches, one fantastic finish and a delightful assist, this was the definition of a debut to remember for the Brazilian. A tense second half followed, with Eddie Nketiah eventually easing the woes of the travelling fans with a header that won the game and sent the three points back to North London. They were methodical with their assaults on goal, and they were diverse with their movements both down the flanks and through the middle. [Rob Holding](https://www.espn.co.uk/football/player/_/id/218188/Rob-Holding), 5 -- Despite one or two nice recoveries, the Englishman was slow to the ball quite frequently and seemed off the pace in Zurich.
