"It is time for us all to get behind Liz Truss and her team, and her programme, and deliver for the people of this country. "Congratulations to Liz Truss on her decisive win. We can and we will get through it and we will come out strong on the other side." Johnson also called for his party to unite behind Truss after months of infighting during the leadership contest. "We are, of course, providing the short and long-term solutions for our energy needs, not just using more of our domestic hydrocarbons, but going up by 2030 to 50 gigawatts of wind power," he said. Comparing himself to a "booster rocket", Johnson suggested he would initially take a backseat role in politics. "Boris, you got Brexit done. Making our streets safer, building more hospitals, and yes, we will have 50,000 more nurses by the end of this parliament and 40 new hospitals by the end of the decade," he said, before correcting himself and promising the hospitals by the end of this parliament. Johnson has already faced criticism for not having delivered on the hospital promise. He added: "This is a tough time for the economy, this is a tough time for families up and down the country. "This is it, folks....In only a couple of hours I will be in Balmoral to see Her Majesty the Queen and the torch will finally be passed to a new Conservative leader," Johnson told a large crowd of supporters assembled outside Number 10 for his farewell address.

Liz Truss confirmed as prime minister after meeting Queen at ... (The Guardian)

Latest updates: Liz Truss invited to form a new government after becoming the UK's new prime minister.

She says she told Truss she would be “better placed to support her from outside of the cabinet”. Truss’s views seem to have changed greatly from her Oxford University Lib Dems days when, at a party conference in Brighton in 1994, she contributed to a debate on the abolition of the monarchy, saying “we do not believe people should be born to rule”. He is expected to be made levelling up secretary in the reshuffle later today. He said he expected Truss’s cabinet to include people who supported Rishi Sunak in the leadership contest. Clarke rejected suggestions that the Truss energy package would spook the financial markets. When it is clear an individual can form a government, they are made Prime Minister, to quote Harold Wilson in 1964, “on the spot”. In her letter Dorries partly explains why she likes the outgoing PM so much. The monarch meets the departing prime minister and their successor, often in quick succession. Sir Iain Duncan Smith, the former Tory leader and Liz Truss supporter, told the World at One that he was offered a cabinet job by Truss but decided not to accept it. According to the Commons library briefing, even though Buckingham Palace says Truss “kissed hands” upon her appointment as PM, she probably didn’t. We’ve now got a picture of Liz Truss meeting the Queen. The Queen, of course, has said even less over the past 70 years about her audiences with her prime ministers.

The former prime minister will make a lot of money writing columns and giving speeches, but friends hint at a Churchillian comeback.

Johnson has long been a popular draw for corporate events, making up to £100,000 a time in 2019. This paradoxical sense of poverty is echoed by the fact Johnson is sometimes described as homeless beyond Downing Street. In his final speech, Boris Johnson compared himself to Cincinnatus ... (The Washington Post)

Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus was a Roman statesman who gave up his power for the good of the Roman Republic. But in one version of the story, he came back.

While historians largely [believe this is the stuff of legends](https://www.britannica.com/biography/Lucius-Quinctius-Cincinnatus), some political observers interpreted Johnson’s reference to Cincinnatus in his farewell speech as a sign that he would one day be back. As Liz Truss takes over, Boris Johnson looks in the mirror and sees ... (USA TODAY)

Liz Truss took over as British prime minister from Boris Johnson, who went out with a characteristic verbal bang.

"I don't think this will help to maintain, or strengthen, the position of the country ... London has for quite a long time been actively trying to compensate for the loss of identity and influence in the EU by taking drastic steps on the world stage, including aggressive actions over the situation that has developed around Ukraine." “If she indulges this without good judgment, she could do real damage to Britain’s prospects and standing in the world" - Truss is under pressure to intervene in Britain's energy markets to relieve spiraling household energy costs, which are some of the highest in Europe. "I look forward to deepening the special relationship between our countries and working in close cooperation on global challenges, including continued support for Ukraine as it defends itself against Russian aggression," he wrote on the social media platform. She said "now is the time to tackle the issues holding Britain back." Truss has advocated a hardline approach to Russia over the Ukraine war. Kwasi Kwarteng is widely expected to be Chancellor of the Exchequer, similar to finance minister. - "On the subject of bouncing around in future careers, let me say that I am now like one of those booster rockets that has fulfilled its function," he said. "Like Cincinnatus, I am returning to my plough and I will be offering this government nothing but the most fervent support." - But the Cincinnatus namedrop could be a coded reference to Johnson's ambition to one day lead the country again. Johnson also made the 1,000-mile round trip to tender his resignation, which the Palace said the queen was "pleased to accept."

Boris Johnson Arrives at Queen's Estate to Offer Resignation (U.S. News & World Report)

LONDON (AP) — Liz Truss has persuaded Britain's Conservative Party to make her its leader. On Tuesday, she will become prime minister of the whole U.K. and ...

That paved the way for Truss, a one-time accountant who was first elected to the House of Commons in 2010. In theory, Truss has time to make her mark: She doesn’t have to call a national election until late 2024. Rising food and energy prices, driven by the invasion of Ukraine and the aftershocks of COVID-19 and Brexit, have propelled U.K. But she’s likely to have much cooler conversations with EU leaders, who were annoyed by her uncompromising stance as foreign secretary in talks over trade rules for Northern Ireland, an unresolved Brexit issue that has soured relations between London and Brussels. “I think she’s got a big, challenging job ahead of her,'' Robert Conway, 71, an electronics manufacturer, said in London. Truss, a low-tax, small-government conservative who admires Margaret Thatcher, says her priority is cutting taxes and slashing regulations to fuel economic growth. Truss became prime minister a day after the ruling Conservative Party chose her as its leader in an election where the party’s 172,000 dues-paying members were the only voters. It was the first time in the queen’s 70-year reign that the handover of power took place at Balmoral, rather than Buckingham Palace in London. Johnson took note of the strains facing Britain as he left the prime minister’s official residence at No. “Given people are really worried, given people are losing sleep over their energy bills, businesses aren’t investing because of the crisis, I think that’s really wrong." Johnson, who announced his intention to step down two months ago, formally resigned during his own audience with the queen a short time earlier. “As strong as the storm may be, I know the British people are stronger.’’

This text may not be in its final form and may be updated or revised in the future. And she's faced a lot of criticism during this campaign to become leader this summer for some of the pronouncements she's made about taxes. But Liz Truss, for one, has expressed a degree of caution about how close that relationship might be in the future. MARX: Well, she's the third consecutive prime minister to take power without having to win a general election. And that was to pay off some of the debts racked up during the pandemic. MARTIN: She's already - I mean, because she's a conservative, she's already promised to cut taxes and grow the economy. MARTIN: The chaotic withdrawal of U.S. has been going through prime ministers at a fairly brisk rate as of late - four in the past six years, right? MARX: Well, she's been particularly vocal and hard-line about the European Union during discussions over the aftermath of Brexit, which has left the long-term trading status of Northern Ireland slightly unresolved. But it still seems like a really tall order, given everything that you just said and the promises that she's made to help people deal with them. Truss has been pretty vague about details until now, but she's under huge pressure from her party, from Parliament, from the public to ensure that people can afford to heat and light their homes this winter. Truss has said that the government's policies to tackle Britain's energy crisis will be top of her agenda once she gets into Downing Street.

For critics, it was a reminder of why his administration collapsed in scandal before it could fulfil Johnson’s lofty policy aims. And it left many observers wondering whether this really is the end for a leader who has long defied political gravity. LONDON -- Boris Johnson’s term as British leader was a mix of high drama and low disgrace.

Liz Truss is officially Britain's new prime minister after she met with Queen Elizabeth II today. She will have to immediately face the country's looming ...

She'll go straight to Downing Street and is expected to make a statement outside its famous black door (or, if the weather has its say, inside the building.) He declined to apologize for the scandals over honesty and integrity that sunk his tenure. She promised to ensure that “people can get doctors’ appointment and the NHS service they need.” She beat rival Rishi Sunak in the Conservative leadership contest on Monday after a weeks-long campaign. - A new Cabinet will be named. But the showers then passed, and some very damp MPs made their way back outside. I am confident that together, we can ride out the storm. The imagery isn't ideal. But the reality is that Truss’ premiership starts under a cloud. Still, starting from a place of low expectations can be helpful to a new leader. She survived a bitter and bruising leadership campaign that saw a number of her own Conservative colleagues trash her economic plan. We should not be daunted by the challenges we face.

Editorial: Britain has a new government led by women. Vanquishing ... (Chicago Tribune)

British Prime Minister Liz Truss will be expected to focus first on the cost-of-living crisis and its most troubling constituent, the energy crisis.

She has said she will do everything in her power to support the Ukrainian people and vanquish Putin. Truss also has promised to cut billions of dollars in taxes, potentially including a cut in VAT, a tax on consumption. Truss, who lacks Johnson’s bouncy, cartoonish personality and probably the Teflon that long surrounded him, has to act like Farmer Boris will be a permanent condition, forthcoming memoir notwithstanding. In the upper echelons of British power, white men suddenly are in notably short supply. Cincinnatus is as good a metaphor as any for that, even if few Britons will be fooled. The unusual location far from London was fair enough, given that the aged monarch was meeting the 15th prime minister of her 70-year reign.
