Morehead City native gifts family's island to UNC Institute | Coastal ... (Coastal Review Online)

The 17-acre island at the mouth of the Newport River in Carteret County was donated earlier this year.

“(The island) won’t be there forever, but maybe other parts of the North Carolina coast won’t be there forever either and so part of what we do is try to understand what those processes look like so we can help citizens and good policy and other decision making that needs to accompany these processes that are going on around us. The island is a few short miles by boat from the institute. “Given the fact that all of eastern North Carolina or much of eastern North Carolina is really subject to those same sorts of natural stressors associated with climate change over the coming decades (the island) offers itself as a bit of a microcosm of that. That side of the island is eroding. I just turned 82 in May so for me to think that another 40 years of enjoying the island when I go back to Morehead and walking, taking family and friends there, it’s rapidly becoming something that is not going to be happening.” “Certain parts of your memory are so precious to you when you grow up and things you’ve done and remembrances of friends and family that you just don’t want to get rid of them unless you have to or unless you get to a point where I am now that you realize you’re not going to be around forever,” he said. All eyes were trained on a small island at the mouth of the Newport River where a menhaden factory was engulfed in fire. His affection for the island hasn’t changed. No one knows what started the fire in 1953. “We had emotional ties to the island. One of his uncles was an avid fisherman. That was his family’s factory.

All 10 aboard floatplane presumed dead after crash near Whidbey ... (The Seattle Times)

The pilot did not report trouble or issue a mayday, and the plane disappeared from flight-control radar screens. Only one body has been found.

An inexperienced seaplane passenger, she posted a “half-playful” photo of the flight on social media, noting her nerves in the air. “Once you get those out of the way, the thing I’d be looking at is the age of the airplane.” “We don’t know any details yet regarding the cause of the accident.” One resident of Bush Point gave the Coast Guard a saucer-sized piece of foam that reeked of fuel. The plane then apparently lost altitude fast, at a rate of thousands of feet per minute, she said. Northwest Seaplanes struck an unspecified settlement with the Cavners before the lawsuit went to trial. “It really gives us no idea whether the aircraft completely broke up or maybe if there is a large piece of fuselage underneath the water.” “The hearts of all the first responders go out to those who lost a family member, a loved one or a friend in the crash.” Officials hope the search will turn up evidence that might explain how and why the plane went into the water. “We are deeply saddened and beyond devastated at the loss of our beloved Ross Mickel, Lauren Hilty, Remy and their unborn baby boy, Luca,” read a statement issued Monday night by the Mickel and Hilty families. Little information on the cause or circumstances of the crash was available. Searchers have recovered only a single body, a woman’s, but otherwise have found few traces of the single-engine de Havilland Canada DHC-3 Turbine Otter that disappeared from radar Sunday around 3 p.m.

The easy trail has only about 40 feet of elevation gain and features several spots to stop, including the docks at Hadley’s Landing. Hiking trails offer not only a different way to experience the island, but an opportunity to connect more deeply with the natural environment – just as people have been doing for thousands of years. Rich with food sources like wapato, camas and waterfowl, the island was a natural place for many Chinookan families to set up seasonal homes.

Ten people were aboard a floatplane that crashed Sunday afternoon in Mutiny Bay, west of Whidbey Island.

The search will continue Monday and the scene is still considered the subject of active investigation. Monday near Whidbey Island's Bush Point boat ramp, at least two boats that appeared to be Coast Guard cutters were visible on the water in the distance. Coast Guard crews searched the waters off Whidbey Island on Sunday night and early Monday morning, but did not recover any bodies or debris, the agency said in a tweet Monday. It was windy and the forecast showed a chance of thunderstorms. When the plane took to the air, it lurched and dipped throughout the ride. Scott Giard, search and rescue program director for the Pacific Northwest regional Coast Guard, said that as of Monday around 9 a.m. One woman on board has been confirmed dead, and the search is ongoing for nine other passengers, including a child. The DHC-3 is a solid craft with a good reputation, she said, but it was built in the 1960s. The plane was piloted by Preston Cavner, whose two sons, wife and a babysitter were on board. “Once you get those out of the way, the thing I’d be looking at is the age of the airplane.” "All next of kin have been notified of this decision," the Coast Guard said on Twitter. The only floatplane at the dock appeared to be a small private Cessna.
