Why are Man United paying so much for Antony? Ajax star's €100 ... (Sporting News)

Manchester United dishing out a gargantuan €100 million for Ajax winger Antony proves that not all massive transfer fees are directly comparable.

For a club already in massive debt thanks to the Glazer ownership, having just spent big money to acquire Casemiro from Real Madrid, this kind of deal comes with considerable downside. Is Antony guaranteed to be a success at Manchester United simply because they paid lots of money for him? It's likely that had United not been interested, and another club with less financial flexibility were in talks, Ajax would negotiate within the interested club's means if they were indeed motivated to make a sale. While Antony was always one of manager Ten Hag's long-term targets, their decision to pursue a deal so late in the window meant they were forced to capitulate to Ajax's demands. Piggybacking on the club's need to bring in attacking talent, the Glazer family's approval rating among Manchester United fans is near the floor. This was directly followed by a massive increase in transfer market activity, with Casemiro acquired the very same day as protests rang outside Old Trafford, and Antony's capture comes just a week later. If the Dutch side didn't receive a bid worthy of their attention, they could keep Antony at the club with little long-term harm, and plenty of time still left to negotiate a satisfactory transfer fee at a later date. The Red Devils were left floundering for a host of players in the summer transfer window, missing out on key targets such as Frenkie de Jong, Christopher Nkunku, and many others linked in the press. One key to determining a player's transfer fee is his contract with the selling club. As this desperation grew, Man United lost negotiating leverage as Ajax could see how much the club needed to bring in reinforcements to improve the side. Those answers will come at a later date, but the following information can at least provide immediate clarity as to why Man United felt it worth capitulating to Ajax's demands. The Premier League club, desperate for a revival under Erik ten Hag, are in rebuild mode.

My focus is now on helping Manchester United, and we'll see what the future holds after I have given my all this season. The chance to work with David de Gea, alongside Tom Heaton, is one that I am relishing. I enjoyed every minute of my time there and made amazing memories to look back on. There is an obligation to sign him permanently at £6m if Dubravka starts a certain number of Premier League games.

Full transcript: Antony's signing interview (Manchester United)

Devour every word from the Brazilian's first Q&A as a United player following his transfer from Ajax.

They can expect a lot of desire, dedication and fight from me, I always play with a lot of heart. “Depends, I go out for a walk with my son or I'll go shopping and buy something, play cards with friends to take your mind of things and enjoy your day off. I'm very family-orientated and a home body, but I like to have a lot of people in my house, friends to have a good time and a laugh with.” It was always plan A, I was going to carry out plan A to make it and fulfil mine and my family's dream. I absolutely watched the game, every minute of it and was really happy with the win and celebrated a lot.” “I'm a very relaxed and family-orientated person, I've got my son who I love to spend time with. His confidence in me grew as he got to know me better and I'm really happy and grateful to see his confidence in my game from my time at Ajax. I can't wait to put my boots on and start playing and helping my teammates, I'm really looking forward to it.” I have the same personality he knows me well and knows what I'm like. He's a manager I have respect and affection for – when I found out he was moving here I wished him all the best and all the success he deserves. I love it and it motivates me to see him play. “Definitely, I was at the club from the age of 12 until I was 19.

Man Utd transfer news LIVE: Cristiano Ronaldo offered Napoli loan ... (The Sun)

THE hottest transfer saga of the summer may have one final twist, despite Erik ten Hag stating that Cristiano Ronaldo would stay at Man Utd.That's bec.

But he will have to take a significant pay-cut. I have the same personality. If I need to leave the pitch really hurting, no problem. I absolutely watched the game, every minute of it and was really happy with the win and celebrated a lot.Antony I love it and it motivates me to see him play. Chelsea are said to have already made a bid. Manchester United winger Tahith Chong is in the process of completing a transfer to Birmingham City and we now have a better idea of the details. I watched the game closely and attentively, what stood out was the desire, the unity of the team, the fire in their bellies, the desire to play. Martinez has his Argentinian style, we know it well. When United scored I celebrated as if I was a fan in the stands. Ajax would have had plenty of time to find a replacement which would have made the transfer of Antony a much easier process. Of course I watched it.

Man Utd team news 'leaked' for Leicester clash with Cristiano ... (Daily Express)

MANCHESTER UNITED take on Leicester in the Premier League on Thursday night.

And the ace bagged 18 goals in his maiden campaign back at Old Trafford. And he appears to now be planning for life without Ronaldo, with the veteran having just one more year remaining on his current United contract. And he was unable to find the back of the net or provide any assists in that time. Ronaldo has only started one match this campaign, with his apparent desire to leave and lack of match fitness seemingly getting in the way of a regular place in Erik ten Hag’s line-up. The 37-year-old then returned to pre-season training late and missed his side’s summer tour as he pushed for a move away amid links with the likes of Chelsea, Napoli, Sporting Lisbon, Marseille and AC Milan. The Red Devils signed Ronaldo for a second time last August as he returned to the Premier League following nine years with Real Madrid and three years with Juventus.

Hear from the boss as he chats about team news, the transfer window and the trip to Old Trafford.

That is the only reason why we are here, and we have to continue to do that. We have obviously tried to get everything done that we can, and sometimes you have to get the right balance. Yesterday it was a real possibility and we tried, but then we kept the decision to say that it has to be the right player for the team and for the club. I think we have learned a lot from that and there's still the players that we have to get out. We have gone through things like that when we hadn’t won at Stamford Bridge for 20 or something years, but you need to believe that you will do that. We have to go into the market and the other teams and coaches are going to tell you how good you are, what your value is and what you’ve done. The attitude of the player is there and he’s really disappointed to be out again as you can imagine, and the team needs him when he’s back. He called me really late last night and it was more of a conversation that we used to have when we were teammates and really good friends. There is nothing else we can do, we have an academy as well that we have to use, and we’ll try to utilise the players in the best possible way. Then we had to react in the market and we tried, but at the end of the day we have to bring in the player that we feel is right for the team and for the club and we didn’t manage to do that. I think that there have been moments when the history and the media were talking about it, and the special rivalry between certain players built a certain momentum into it. No, we had a lot of things still to do in the squad, you see the amount of departures, compared to the number we have recruited.
