Champions League draw: possible Group of Death (AS English)

As the 2022/23 edition of UEFA's showpiece competition draws nearer, the idea of four beasts battling it out for two places always catches the imagination.

The ideal situation, seen by many of the bigger sides, is to be landed with one other top side as you are assured to avoid them in the next round. The three Spanish sides in Pot 2 -- Barcelona, Atlético and Sevilla -- will, of course, avoid last year’s victors thanks to UEFA keeping teams from the same country apart early on. Then again, you could make changes to the top two there and see Man City (1) and Barcelona (2) take their place.

Unfortunately for Plzen, they’re likely to finish last and will be lucky to be able to grind out any kind of result against the other three teams. The highlight of this group that the world will be looking forward to has to be Robert Lewandowski’s first match against his old club as Barcelona goes head-to-head with Bayern Munich. UEFA Champions League group stage draw - Predictions, must-see ... (ESPN)

Finally, all the groups have been drawn and we know who's playing whom in the Champions League. We go group-by-group to pick the favorites and more.

[Kylian Mbappe](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/231388/Kylian-Mbappé) or [Erling Haaland](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/253989/Erling-Haaland), and [Casemiro](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/173666/Casemiro) joined [Manchester United](/soccer/team?id=360), but they are still a formidable team that knows how to win this competition. [Ukraine](/soccer/team?id=457) while the country is at war with [Russia](/soccer/team?id=454), a situation that means Shakhtar will have to play their home games at Stadion Wojska Polskiego in Warsaw. The rest of the group is up for grabs, and Celtic, RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk will all have an opportunity to qualify. Both games will be emotional night given what is happening in Ukraine, but Shakhtar, which reached the last 16 in 2018, are not here to make up the numbers and will give Ancelotti's team a tough examination. FC Salzburg will embark upon their fourth consecutive group stage campaign and boast a forward line led by [Benjamin Sesko](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/289155/Benjamin-Sesko). [Real Madrid](/soccer/team?id=86) last time out, who have since signed defender [Antonio Rudiger](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/169438/Antonio-Rüdiger) on a free transfer. [Harry Kane](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/142200/Harry-Kane) and Son Heung-min -- who know what it takes to thrive in this competition. You can expect Liverpool to be back to their best once their injured ( [Diogo Jota](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/208133/Diogo-Jota), [Thiago](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/195354/Thiago), [Naby Keita](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/196567/Naby-Keita), [Joel Matip](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/134659/Joël-Matip) to name just four) and suspended players ( [Darwin Nunez](https://www.espn.com/soccer/player/_/id/271788/Darwin-Núñez)) are back and once their defenders are willing to defend again. They've had a shocking start to the season, with three defeats in three Bundesliga games and a loss in the German Cup against a third-division side. Porto will play with intensity and with confidence and will be difficult to play against, basically the complete opposite of Bayer Leverkusen. They seem to still be searching for their identity, and as a result, their attacking game is still a work in progress. It won't be easy for Klopp's and Spalletti's teams, but I expect them to go through with Ajax in third, while Rangers will get points on the board but not enough to make it to the Europa League.

Group-By-Group Breakdown for a Champions League Featuring ... (Sports Illustrated)

There were signs of improvement in the second half of last season, but there is pressure on Max Allegri to show that he is capable of restoring Juve to the sort of level it was at before he was edged out in an attempt to change the style of the squad. Defeat to Osasuna and then a draw at home to Valladolid was not the ideal start to the season in Spain, and that despite a summer in which the only player of real significance it lost was Diego Carlos. If there is a common theme, it has been a failure to take its chances, and without a significant arrival before the end of the window, it’s hard to see that changing. There had, perhaps, been a sense that City had to be controlling games to win them; Haaland may offer greater ruthlessness and the possibility of burgling goals when City is not playing well. Mané and Matthijs de Ligt have been signed, but the question is how to step up a level in big European games and, given the lack of challenge at home, that may not be easy. Brugge has a recent record of making life difficult for grandees in the group stage, but this feels like a season of transition. There are more unknowns in this group stage than there have been in a long time—although the underlying sense of more and more games that mean less and less remains. What usually happens is that he attempts to be more open, then it starts to go wrong and sometime in the winter he goes back to basics. The impact of a pulsating Ibrox is well attested, but progress to the group stage for the first time since 2011 was achieved via a canny and resilient performance away against PSV Eindhoven. Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold have not been at their formidable best and there is a sense of lethargy about the squad that suggests the hangover from missing out on the Premier League and Champions League titles last season lingers. This season, though, is a little different, in that the six games of the group stage will be compressed into a nine-week spell (which itself is interrupted by an international break) to be completed before the World Cup. But on the other, the group stage can be a slog, the disparity between the rich and the less well-off so stark, the qualifiers so predictable, that the pre-Christmas fixtures can feel like an exercise less in elite sport than in filling the TV schedules and making money.

Turin, Lisbon and Haifa are not easy away days, but Maccabi face an uphill task trying to do better than dead last in a group with tremendous pedigree. You can catch all the action this season on It was always going to be about Haaland and in what fashion. The Polish superstar swapped the Allianz Arena for Camp Nou this summer and will now return to Bavaria in Blaugrana colors. The Di Maria Derby in a group which features two former clubs in PSG and Benfica should catch some attention. Les Parisiens against Juve is one of the big draws overall, let alone within the group, but this has the potential to get tricky for the French if they are anything other than perfect as they have been so far in Ligue 1. This season's groups are bursting with stories and quality with very few, if any, unimaginative groups, and plenty of controversial pairings. [Thursday's UEFA Champions League group stage draw](https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/champions-league-draw-results-barcelona-bayern-inter-in-group-of-death-haalands-man-city-to-face-dortmund/live/) with Robert Lewandowski returning to Bayern Munich with new club Barcelona and Erling Haaland facing ex-club Borussia Dortmund with new employers Manchester City. Adding Italian giants Inter Milan to the mix is simply incendiary and Viktoria Plzen are the unfortunate fall guys who will be lucky to emerge with much other than some fantastic experiences at some of European soccer's most prestigious venues.

Tottenham's Champions League draw: Should Spurs really be happy? (The Athletic)

Tottenham are the strongest team in their Champions League group, a scenario every Spurs fan must be delighted with.

[Juventus](https://theathletic.com/football/team/juventus/). Or maybe we are overthinking what is in fact looking us in the face: Tottenham are the strongest team and clear favourites in their Champions League group, which is a scenario every Spurs fan would have gleefully taken just four months ago. But this group, likely to be in the balance all the way through, may not give them the opportunity to do that. None of the teams come from a minor European league, none of them have no recent or real European experience, and none of them will be easy places to go. [Eintracht Frankfurt](https://theathletic.com/football/team/eintracht-frankfurt/). There is a long history of English teams going to places like these, getting caught off guard by the occasion and the noise, and never getting back into it. If they can summon anything like the same atmosphere and sense of occasion at home, that will be a difficult trip. That is just a sadly inevitable part of the modern football landscape and already means this season will be harder for Sporting Lisbon. The news is so good, arguably, that it could almost counteract anything that could have happened to Spurs from pots two and three. Maybe it is the result of the churn of players this summer, losing key left wing-back Filip Kostic to Only five other sides, all of them from Europe’s minor leagues (Dinamo Zagreb, Shakhtar Donetsk, Copenhagen, Viktoria Plzen and Maccabi Haifa) were ranked below them by the website. On the other, it is three established sides from big leagues, three difficult away games, with nobody who will give Spurs a simple six points.
