Local hero – Igor Antón's electrifying 2011 Vuelta a España victory ... (Cyclingnews.com)

As the Vuelta returns to the Alto del Vivero, Basque rider re-lives that famous day and tells us the secrets of his home climb.

But when they saw on TV that I was in the break, they all came out even sooner to watch it go past and cheer me on a bit." So, a team with a sprinter chasing behind could begin to organise themselves and try and pull back the move," Antón warns. As well as working for Cyclingnews, he has also written for The Independent, The Guardian, ProCycling, The Express and Reuters. "The drop-down to Bilbao is very fast, a 4% gradient at most and big ring stuff. "My first goal in the Vuelta that year was to go for the overall, but I got sick and wasn't in great shape form-wise. But it's not like some climbs which are like a narrow funnel, and which mean either you have to be on the front or put your foot down. "It was more a question of enjoying the moment. "But then I got sixth on the Angliru and then when we went up Peña Cabarga again, where Chris Froome won, I got fifth. There's a picnic area at the top local families use a lot for barbecues and some spectacular views of Bilbao and we'd go up there all the time." Then when I heard the Vuelta would be coming through my village, going over the Alto del Vivero and then onto Bilbao, well, that was even more amazing." Antón hasn't moved on, geographically speaking, still living in the place where he grew up and close to where he took the most significant win of his career. But then Antón did it all over again, after dropping his breakaway companions with 18km to go and going solo over the top of the Alto del Vivero.

Basque-backed team racing with pride and ambition on 'home roads' in quest in return to glory.

That’s the objective of the team, to try to win this jersey or to win a stage. “It would be great if the team could deliver a stage victory these next few days. The team’s trademark orange jersey returned in 2018. “The objective will be to try to hang on for as long as I can, and it would be nice to wear the jersey for a few more stages. “Everyone inside the bus knows how important these stages are for the team, our sponsors, and our fans,” Luis Ángel Maté told VeloNews. I had seen the main climb the day before and I could manage my efforts and gain the mountain points.

NGV to unveil large-scale installation by Mexican architect Tatiana ... (Beat Magazine)

The inaugural MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission, opening on 6 October, will unveil a large-scale installation by world-leading Mexican architect ...

Tatiana Bilbao said: ‘I am deeply honoured and grateful to have been chosen for the Women in Design Commission by the NGV and MECCA. Her architectural work was presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2018 and is held in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou, Paris and the Art Institute of Chicago. The communal structure represents a bygone practice of laundering clothing in public spaces and the social bonds formed among communities through this act. The MECCA x NGV Women in Design Commission is a major five-year series that, each year, invites an international female designer or architect to create new and significant work for the NGV Collection. Her work is known for challenging historical conventions, often rearticulating spaces so that they are more people-orientated and inclusive. Central to the installation is a basin-like structure inspired by the Lavadero of Huichapan, a historical communal laundry located in the town of Huichapan, Hildalgo in Mexico.

Vuelta a Espana stage 5 Live - More Basque hills en route to Bilbao (Cyclingnews.com)

Double ascent of the Alto del Vivero precedes downhill run-in to the finish.

Roll-out is coming up in just over five minutes, the start proper closer to the hour. Blue skies and temperatures nearing 30 degrees in Irún, right on the French border. But the most likely outcome could be a breakaway victory. We could see the first real fight for a breakaway of this Vuelta. With this sort of terrain, and with enough question marks over who'll control the peloton, there should be a fair bit of interest in today's escape. Today's stage is an interesting one, which could go a number of ways. Hayter might be the sort of fast finisher who could get over today's final climb, but Ineos won't control all day and he doesn't look like he wants to gamble. It was a massive moment for rider, team and race. A fast and frantic start! The Alto de Vivero is practically in Igor Antón's back garden. We've been racing for a shade under an hour. Impey, Soler and Muhlberger are off the back early on while Fred Wright kicks clear and joins Adria in pursuit of Stewart, whose lead is down to 22 seconds. I was in the perfect position in the final and I have the red jersey. Fans are out in their droves here, which is lovely to see - a sea of Basque flags and orange jerseys. It's Wright and Craddock who are leading the chase in this quintet but they still trail Soler by 12 seconds on this descent. Langellotti, meanwhile, adds another point to his KOM tally, so he's up to 13pts and consolidates his drip on the polka dot jersey. Over the top goes the Spanish leader with that precarious gap over the chasers. and it looks like it will come down to a fast finish in Bilbao. Masnada and Muhlbeger have ridden clear of the chasers. Wright picked up four seconds for his third place - but that wasn't enough and Molard will lead this race by two seconds once the peloton comes through the finish. I knew he was very fast for the sprint so I had my doubts. In the final I was waiting for him because I knew he could win the stage with his sprint. I was not so far down on GC and I talked to my team-mates about the possibility of getting the red today.

Vuelta a España stage 5: Marc Soler holds off chasers to win in Bilbao (VeloNews)

The Spanish rider soloes to the stage win as Rudy Molard takes the race lead.

5 19 5:09 He was still clear going into the final kilometer and a stall with 500 meters to go sealed the chasers’ fate. Soler had been dropped earlier on the climb but got back to the others and then made a big effort heading into the final 17km. He rode powerfully heading onto the second ascent of the Alto del Vivero and had a 40-second advantage with 18km remaining. The dozen leaders had an advantage of five minutes there, making it certain that one of the riders from the break would take the stage. All were brought back, as was an effort by Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo). Roglič finished as part of the main bunch 5:09 back and slips to fifth. The climbs began with the third category ascents of the Puerto de Gontzagarigana (km 95.6), the Balcón de Bizkaia (km 102.4) and the Alto de Morga (km 125.4). He is now two seconds clear of Wright, with Nikias Arndt (Team DSM) third, 1:09 back. Soler did things the hard way, missing the initial 17-man breakaway and then bridging across alone.

I’ll be thinking all evening about what I could have done better, but I’m really happy with my shape and taking the white jersey is a nice consolation for not quite being able to win today.” The day started with a fierce battle for the break, which eventually formed on the approach to the day’s opening climb, the 3rd category Puerto de Gontzagarigana. Never before has the 23-year-old worn a jersey in a World Tour race, but this will surely not be his last.

SCORES ON THE DOORS - POINTS COMPETITION. Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) 127 points. Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) 118. Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) 47

And given your position just two seconds off the race summit, you may well even find yourself swapping the white jersey for that red jersey later this week, too." "Keep riding with the aforementioned charisma, verve and panache, and that elusive stage win will come sooner rather than later. That win will come, says Felix Lowe, and he shouldn't change a thing. The best placed overall is Jan Bakelants at 5'02, just under a minute behind Primoz Roglic. The upwards roads are working to their advantage and ten have made good progress since they broke free. Chapeau to Fred, Phil and the whole family Wright. That's assuming they can both hold off the approaches of the many other riders, who also wouldn't mind their day in red. Langellotti had a very good day at the office yesterday, climbing into the blue polka dots with 13 points. That seems to be all Groupama FDJ, working on the front of the peloton, as you'd expect, are prepared to permit them. There's a maximum of 40 points on offer today, split evenly between the late-positioned intermediate and the finishline. We can expect that to come down dramatically on the final two categorised climbs, but we're still comfortably ahead of the fastest schedule. I've just had my attention drawn to the fact that this is the Vuelta stage that contains the most altitude gain, at 4120 metres.

Both the red jersey and the stage are going to come down to the final climb. There's a very tricky descent coming up, and it looks like QuickStep are at the beginnings of the execution of a cunning plan. With some steep ramps above between 9 and 10%, it's arguably the tougher of the two. The official race ticker now has Fred Wright as listed in the main peloton group and Rudy Molard out the back of it, which may explain why. The pace has been knocked off a little allowing Mark Padun to steal a few more seconds. The Pico Jano, a climb completely new to La Vuelta, is broken into three distinct parts, the lower and higher of them being where it's really hard. He leads by just under a minute of advantage at the foot of the final climb. Simon Yates (BikeExchange Jayco) takes advantage of the steeper slopes and slower peloton pace to launch an attack. "I didn't have the legs for the final climb, so I just fought all the way to the finish. Sean Kelly says that it's a little bit too early for him to make his move. The UAE Team Emirates teenagers will be hoping to bridge across to Mas and Evenepoel. Still a long way to the finish.
