Manchester United vs. Liverpool score: Live updates from Premier ... (CBSSports.com)

Under new manager Erik ten Hag, Manchester United have yet to score a goal from open play, only finding the back of the net through an own goal, while losing ...

With Thiago also out of the match, Harvey Elliott will look to continue his strong start to the season. Due to United's lack of scoring, even though he will feature off the bench, a strong performance against Liverpool could go a long way. All eyes will be on Marcus Rashford leading the line as Manchester United look to score their first goal from open play. It's all United but can they keep the intensity up in the match or will Liverpool find their footing? After bursting out the gates in the first 20 mintues with Sancho scoring a goal, Liverpool were the better side for the remainder of the half. It's the first time that we've seen Manchester United look like an Erik ten Hag team but it takes a lot of effort out of them. He uses his pace and leaves the defense in the dust but you can see how much that goal meant to him and the team. That's one way to make sure that the momentum continues in the second half. Not to get complacent, ten Hag subbed on Anthony Martial for Anthony Elanga at the half and it paid dividends. It's a terrible defensive showing for Liverpool and they're running out of time to turn this around. It was redemption day for Manchester United and Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford powered the Red Devils to a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford. The intensity against an injured Liverpool team that has yet to win a game this season was hard to match as Erik ten Hag's squad made it the half with a one-goal.

Jürgen Klopp brings his Reds to Old Trafford for what is one of the biggest club clashes across the globe. Follow all the action live.

Ahead of the team news being announced, it's worth noting that United have pretty much their whole squad to choose from. Harvey Elliot starting is a big plus for the Reds. Madrid, in the emotional statement (“Real Madrid is and always will be your home”), confirmed the Brazilian’s move to Manchester United. Some tidy play around the Liverpool area eventually finds the feet of Sancho in the middle of the box. It's a fairly standard volley for a professional footballer but the Englishman sclaffs it and De Gea watches it bounce harmlessly wide. More slack play from the visitors in midfield (do they think it's still preseason?) and Rashford is sent free into the right channel. Diaz beats Dalot down the left and wins a corner. Rashford is one-on-one with Alisson, gives him the eyes, and slides it straight ahead into the near post. As I said in the build-up, the long list of injuries at Anfield mean options are limited. On the evidence of today, neither of these sides will be. That will waste a few more minutes as the final whistle approaches. Fabinho gets a header at goal but it's easy for De Gea to gather.

Cheers for the new signing before victory over Liverpool were drowned out by chants of 'We want Glazers out'

Fernandes was prominent throughout, looking to release Marcus Rashford behind an uncertain Liverpool defence at the earliest opportunity and revelling in the space between Klopp’s midfield and central defence. Liverpool could have over-ran United’s central midfield of Eriksen and Scott McTominay with an extra man and Roberto Firmino regularly dropping into the hole between them. At least Casemiro will have been encouraged by the intensity and flashes of quality that underpinned his new club’s win over Jürgen Klopp’s side. United have committed to spend an eye-watering total of £142.8m on the 30-year-old — a fee rising to £70m plus a four-year contract worth £350,000-a-week — and the sums involved in luring the midfielder from a glittering nine-year career at the Bernabeu signal the desperation at Old Trafford. Their merited victory rounded off a hectic and head-spinning day for Casemiro who, having bid a tearful farewell to Real Madrid in the morning, arrived at Old Trafford several hours before kick off to take in his new environment. United’s first win of the season at least dragged attention back to where it should always be.

I want to see Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes - they can play in midfield with the pass. “It’s always difficult but I have decisions to make,” he explained. Manchester United vs Liverpool: Red Devils battle to huge win ... (NBC Sports)

Manchester United beat Liverpool 2-1 as a display full of fight, grit and quality stunned Jurgen Klopp's side. The Erik ten Hag era has officially started.

Only a shock win against Liverpool would lift it and that would only be momentarily as Erik ten Hag has to usher in a new style of player with a group of players seriously lacking in confidence. Martial being back is a big boost for United as he was flying in preseason in a fluid front three. At the back, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez both continue to struggle, while David de Gea had a nightmare at Brentford last time out. McTominay, Bruno Fernandes and Eriksen all ran themselves into the ground and aside from a 15 minute period at the end of the first half, Liverpool were never allowed to dictate the tempo of the game. As for Liverpool, they have hardly had a good start to the new season. Liverpool’s worst start to a PL season in 10 years underlines their struggles, but this set in at the end of last season and they can’t keep fighting back in games. United going long, early and often, and they have Liverpool on the back foot. United then had quality in the final third to make all of their hard work count. This game exposed Liverpool’s lack of signings in midfield and Klopp may well go to his board and ask for a midfield addition before the window shuts. Fired up United back up Erik ten Hag’s big calls: Leaving out Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire was a huge call by Erik ten Hag and boy did he get it right. This was Liverpool’s first defeat in 22 Premier League games, as Klopp will point to huge injury issues but his side simply didn’t turn up for most of one of their biggest games of the season. Liverpool’s midfield overrun: Starting James Milner and Harvey Elliott ahead of Fabinho didn’t quite work and Liverpool’s midfield was so easy to play through in the first half.

United's amazing stats against Liverpool (Manchester United)

Ahead of the Liverpool game, Erik ten Hag was keen to put tactics to one side and talk about his Manchester United team delivering “the basic stuff”.

The Old Trafford crowd can accept losing, but it cannot accept a lack of effort and desire. But what they don’t spell out is the passion and bite behind those numbers. It was the manner in which United went about the evening's business that really seemed to rouse the raucous crowd. As Liverpool sought an unlikely route back into the game during the closing stages, we understandably dropped deeper and ceded possession. The Reds played some great stuff on the ball, but what seemed to most please a vociferous Old Trafford crowd was the simple aggression and graft on show. What did he mean?

This failure to bolster the centre of the park, as well as a number of summer departures from Anfield, has ultimately led to a sense that the squad that has started this season is weaker than the one that finished the last. Of course, even if that is indeed the case, it feels like an oversight not to do more to bring in one of the two midfielders this team already needs in order to get their adaptation process underway. And most frustratingly of all, the shortfall in terms of both availability and quality in that area of the pitch that led to this state of affairs had been foreseen by the majority of supporters before a ball was kicked this season.

Towards the end, a pitch invader ran straight into the penalty box, got a few yards from the ball and then slipped in a way any slapstick comedian would be proud of. Already bemused, the post-match arrival of Stormzy with several children in tow reduced Keano to a post-match state of almost total bafflement. You see, that’s the thing about football fans – when push comes to shove most can’t bring themselves to abandon their team in its hour of need. What was supposed to be an evening of barely contained rage and fury – motivated by the levels of stagnation to which these American chancers have let the club descend – actually ended up being one of the more euphoric experiences season ticket holders have enjoyed in quite some time. Monday Night Football has prided itself on its cutting-edge innovation ever since Richard Keys and Andy Gray invented football punditry almost 30 years ago to the day.

What worked for Man United: Ronaldo's replacement Elanga, Rafael ... (The Indian Express)

Elanga, who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting eleven, looked like a player possessed, constantly pressing Alexander-Arnold.

Elanga, who replaced Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting eleven, looked like a player possessed, constantly pressing Alexander-Arnold, who looked out of sorts, and winning the duels. Six minutes later, he turned provider to the Jadon Sancho opener. Now you see we bring the attitude. That United had not scored a goal off their own in nearly 190 minutes—the one against Brighton was an own goal—aptly reflected the toothlessness of their front-line. The full-backs—Tyrell Malacia, who had displaced the lacklustre Luke Shaw, and Diogo Dalot—too were exceptional in curbing the menace of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson. But the performance against Liverpool was as resolute a rearguard they had produced in recent times. A technically gifted centre-back, he contributed to the opening goal too, stealing the ball off Bobby Firmino and belting it upfield, besides his cool tackling and composure in duress. Often, Sancho has looked ponderous—this goal could change it. They lacked ingenuity, physicality and presence of mind. Once Casemiro takes McTominay’s place, Eriksen could be all the more influential a presence. So much so that they were a team unrecognisable from the shambles they were against Brentford last week. Manchester United were a team transformed against Liverpool.

Manchester United vs. Liverpool score: Jadon Sancho and Marcus ... (CBSSports.com)

Erik ten Hag's Red Devils responded in a huge way at home with a win over Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.

They were also solid defensively tracking back to prevent Liverpool from overloading the defense which is something that can't be done with Ronaldo in the side. The trio of Sancho, Rashford, and Elanga/Martial took care of all the necessary attacking damage to deliver a blow to Liverpool. With a few more performances like this, they could be deemed surplus to requirements along with Luke Shaw after Tyrell Malacia contained Salah, who still managed to find the back of the net late in the proceedings. Liverpool, meanwhile, are left to pick up the pieces after three games without a win and a performance to forget at Old Trafford as they were outworked on every area of the pitch. Not to get complacent, ten Hag subbed on Anthony Martial for Anthony Elanga at the half and it paid dividends. It was redemption day for Manchester United as Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford powered the Red Devils to a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Raimond van der Gouw watches training at Carrington (Manchester United)

Erik ten Hag has caught up with an old friend who was at Carrington on Tuesday afternoon.

Former colleague Schmeichel was in the directors' box and Peter's fellow Dane Michael Laudrup, who played for both Barcelona and Real Madrid, was working for the overseas media. He played in some big games for the club, including the 1997 Champions League semi-final with Borussia Dortmund, 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid in the same competition in 2000 and the 1999 UEFA Super Cup final with Lazio. Van der Gouw represented the Reds between 1996 and 2002, after arriving from Vitesse Arnhem to be Peter Schmeichel's deputy.

Cox: United played like Solskjaer's underdogs — but Sancho goal ... (The Athletic)

The 'Manchester United Way' has always been more about speed than possession, and Ten Hag fell back on that when he really needed points.

[Trent Alexander-Arnold](https://theathletic.com/football/player/trent-alexander-arnold-vCmqp6XOqAVWrftz/) booked, hitting the post and assisting Sancho’s opener. So [Anthony Martial](https://theathletic.com/football/player/anthony-martial-OGGk7EEQ2Ec3MI6H/) replaced Elanga, with Rashford changing positions. [Lisandro Martinez](https://theathletic.com/football/player/lisandro-martinez-lZNyZmtnsD6xHZZP/) got tight to [Roberto Firmino](https://theathletic.com/football/player/roberto-firmino-W7r6SSHRbiKIHq5k/) and the full-backs followed Liverpool’s wide players when they drifted into deeper positions. The two lower figures have been [Fulham](https://theathletic.com/football/team/fulham/) against Liverpool on the opening day (62 per cent) and [Brentford](https://theathletic.com/football/team/brentford/) against United last week (65 per cent). Naturally, you expect Ten Hag to shift towards a more possession-based style of football and they surely won’t record a pass completion rate as low as 65 per cent. The board’s opinion about Ronaldo’s value to Manchester United probably isn’t entirely based on footballing factors, but if Ten Hag wants to make the footballing case against Ronaldo, this performance and result without him did the trick. This was a particularly common feature of Ten Hag’s Ajax, who continually built up play down one flank, dragged the opposition across, and then transferred the ball to a free player on the opposite flank. Then the game changed and United could play almost solely on the counter-attack. [Premier League](https://theathletic.com/football/premier-league/) campaign so far. First, there was the presence of central players in wide areas to create overloads. They didn’t attempt to play primarily on the break from the opening minutes. Overall statistics can be misleading considering United led from the 16th minute and the onus was on Liverpool to dominate.

How Manchester United beat Liverpool through the eyes of ... (The Athletic)

We watched Manchester United against Liverpool along with a professional coach and two players to get their expert take on Monday's match.

Henderson can press and turn over the ball brilliantly, but he’s not going to be the creator or support the full-backs in transition. Aluko: It’s the beauty of football. If you don’t believe in the manager’s tactics then it’s hard to execute. The analyst will run down to the changing room at half-time with a laptop. Down to the armpit for offside though. He always had a great left foot, so fit, up and down all game, won all the bleep tests and the yo-yo tests, but just defensively I didn’t think he would be this solid. Aluko: If you lose 4-0 and you’re playing for Man United, or if you’re just a professional footballer full stop, and you’re not fired up for the next game? Sugarman: He’s also got to decide if he’s going to go all in with his ideas from the first day or try to progress and gradually change things bit by bit. I’ll have an individual 15 minutes with one of the coaches on our clips and what he wants to go through. He’s got Robertson alongside him as well, so one of you defend the space and one mark the player. it will have been the out ball in training, but in the game it wasn’t really on. And he’s got that much time Fernandes can point where to put the shot!

Manchester United fans' protests against the Glazers: 'It's our money ... (The Athletic)

There are many different factions of United supporters but they are all linked by their desire to see the Glazers' ownership end.

It is about the principle of fans having a voice and influence. MUST did not organise last night’s protest, but supported the 1958’s efforts and promoted it to its members. MUST recently confirmed that a consultation process has been launched with members for the proposal of a new “fan share scheme” (FSS). “MUST have failed us,” it says on the 1958’s website. Perhaps the most notorious is the “Men in Black”, whose members were reported to be behind the attack on former executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward’s house in January 2020. “We are in this for the long haul. “We need to send a big signal to the Glazer family, they have been taking money out of the club for too long,” said one on the march who didn’t want to be named. “We are not cranks or hooligans, we are passionate United fans with history through generations of our families,” it says on the 1958’s website. One fan had travelled from Norway to show his support and did so without having a ticket to the match. The volume in numbers is better this time, and hopefully the message gets across. We have seen marches and protests before, but Old Trafford is still full and the owners are happy with that.” People were already queueing to enter the pub before the planned meeting time and anti-Glazer chants were in full swing.
