Alistair Brownlee nails his Kona slot with the win at Ironman Kalmar ... (Triathlon Magazine Canada)

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Alistair Brownlee has had a tough season this year, getting sick just before the world championship in St. George, ...

Brownlee would quickly run to the front (Svensson would eventually pull out), putting together a screaming fast 2:40:47 marathon to take the in in 7:38:48. Out on the bike Jesper Svensson would eventually pull clear of Brownlee and Heemeryck, with the Swede hitting T2 just under a minute ahead. IRONMAN Kalmar 2022 results: Brilliant Brownlee books Kona spot (Tri247.com)

He left it late but delivered in style as Alistair Brownlee earned a Kona slot with a dominant win at IRONMAN Kalmar.

But from that moment on it was the Brownlee show – he was in front after 8km and the others didn’t see him from then on. And as things settled down early on the bike that group was whittled down to five, with Brownlee, Svensson and Heemeryck joined by Scott Steenberg (DEN) and Tom Davis (GBR), with nearly a minute-and-a-half back to Elliot Smales (GBR) in sixth. He was part of a select lead group of three for most of the bike leg – Jesper Svensson (SWE) and Pieter Heemeryck (BEL) were the others – and with two Kona slots available and Svensson having already qualified, it was already looking good at that point. Brownlee started the run 47 seconds down on Svensson but well before the end of the first of three loops he was in front and never looked back. [injury and illness-blighted season](https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-news/elite/alistair-brownlee-sub7-out-hip-injury-joe-skipper-in) up until that Welsh win meant that this was his last chance to qualify for the [2022 IRONMAN World Championship at Kona](https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-events/ironman-world-championship) – and he grabbed it in style. [Alistair Brownlee](https://www.tri247.com/triathletes/alistair-brownlee) proved a class apart as he powered to an emphatic victory at [IRONMAN Kalmar](https://www.tri247.com/triathlon-news/elite/ironman-kalmar-2022-date-start-time-follow-live) in Sweden on Saturday.

Alistair Brownlee wins Ironman Kalmar in British record time (220 Triathlon)

The double-Olympic champion was in scintillating form in Sweden as he booked his slot to the Ironman World Championship.

After being overtaken within sight of the finish line in Ironman Oceanside 70.3 in April and quickly fading to fourth, he withdraw on the eve of the Ironman World Championship in St George, Utah with illness. But after success at Ironman 70.3 Swansea a fortnight ago, the Yorkshireman stepped up to the full distance in Sweden to seal an 8min victory and clinch one of the final slots for October’s Ironman World Championship in Hawaii. It marked the latest chapter in a stunning return to form for the two-time Olympic champion, who had been forced to pull out of the year’s first Ironman World Championship with sickness in May and then the Phoenix Foundation Sub7 attempt in Germany through injury.

Chartier, Chura Champions in Tremblant (Slowtwitch)

In the final qualifying race for the 2022 IRONMAN World Championship, U.S. stars Collin Chartier and Haley Chura took top honors at IRONMAN Mont Tremblant.

Jen Annett had chased Chura into second during the bike segment, with Zilinskas in third, with both making inroads on Chura's lead during the opening miles of the marathon. Like Amberger, dominant swimmer Haley Chura was clipped by fellow American Rachel Zilinskas in the water. After a 2:45:59 marathon, Chartier crossed the finish line in 8:08:40 with a 4:31 margin over Amberger and 5:33 over third-place finisher Cody Beals of Canada. With Chartier and Amberger already qualified, and Beals to date not taking a slot for 2022, 4th place finisher David Plese should be eligible for a Kona start. In the women's race, Haley Chura of the U.S. Super fish Josh Amberger of Australia was upset on the swim by Antoine Jolicoeur Desroches of Canada, who took the swim honors.
