2022 Vuelta a España – Stage 2 Preview (Ciclismo Internacional)

The peloton will once again finish in Utrecht, however on the second stage of the Vuelta a Espana it will be at the end of a road stage, with the start a little ...

No, but this is a pan-flat stage and a pure sprint, with the tailwind I reckon having the pole position for the sprint will be crucial, and with the leadout of Danny van Poppel BORA have serious chances of winning tomorrow. My call for the win will be Sam Bennett. Hillier days will suit other riders, the likes of Ethan Hayter, Bryan Coquard and Patrick Bevin for example, but it isn’t likely that they will be up there tomorrow. #184 Xandro Meurisse – You won’t have to be working throughout the day, but stay watchful Xandro. I don’t think it will be strong enough to create real tension in the peloton but the GC teams will be aware throughout the afternoon. There will be very little pure sprints, but this will be one of them. The stage will be mostly about the finale in Utrecht. Mads Pedersen – No true leadout, Pedersen will likely prefer the hillier finales, however with the lack of pure sprinters at the start he may benefit from his heavyweight stature. Sam Bennett – Bennett was given the opportunity to join the Vuelta lineup, and has a strong leadout alongside him which the team gave permission despite their high GC ambitions. It will be an almost pan-flat day, ideal for the pure sprinters, and should see the first bunch sprint. With 16.4 kilometers to go there will be an intermediate sprint with bonifications alongside, which may see a fight to get some minimal seconds, or a race lead change. The opening team time-trial of the race proved eventful, with plenty teams giving it their all to chase a stage win and to limit time losses respectively.

Brits abroad: Who are the British riders in the 2022 Vuelta a España? (Rouleur)

The 2022 Vuelta a España is the final Grand Tour of the year and has a star-studded line-up. Eleven of the 182 riders on the start list are British, ...

This year’s Vuelta a España will be the British rider's third Grand Tour, as he rode the Vuelta in 2020 and was selected to ride the Tour de France for Team DSM in 2021. Usually in a Grand Tour, McLay would also work in the flat stages and early parts of hilly stages to protect the team’s GC hopeful, Nairo Quintana. Froome’s performance at the Tour will have given him confidence for the Vuelta, both in terms of fighting for stage wins and going for the overall general classification. It was impressive performances at races like the Tour of Britain that meant Shaw caught the eye of EF Education EasyPost team boss Jonathan Vaughters and secured a two year contract with the team until 2023. Similarly to Stewart, Hayter also performs better after a hillier stage – he doesn’t always have the turn of speed to outsprint the purest of fast men in a straightforward kick to the line. At the Tour de France a few weeks ago, he finished third on the stage to Alpe d’Huez after a day in the breakaway before having to unfortunately retire from the race due to a positive Covid-19 test on stage 18. All of these results point to a steady and solid return to form for the 30-year-old rider, and give a strong indication that he is one to watch for the overall at this year’s Vuelta. Hayter is one of the biggest talents to come out of British Cycling in recent years, already with victories in shorter stage races like the Tour of Poland and the Tour of Norway to his name. There are plenty of stages at the 2022 Vuelta that fit this description, which means that Stewart could have multiple chances to go for victory. Since that year, Carthy has secured two top-10 positions on the general classification in the Giro d’Italia in 2021 and 2022, but has yet to stand on a Grand Tour podium again. Simon Yates of Team BikeExchange-Jayco is the most likely rider on our list of Brits to take the overall victory at the 2022 Vuelta a España. His team will be fully behind him to win and the route is well-suited to Yates’ strength.

The likes of Ineos and Jumbo-Visma will be the big favourites and they start later on - plus the roads seem to be drying out... Ben O'Connor and Bob Jungels will be happy with that: Ag2R-Citroen have only conceded 24 seconds at the finish to the current leaders BikeExchange-Jayco. The British team are very strong - as you expect - but they nevertheless have four Grand Tour debutants in Luke Plapp, Ethan Hayter, Ben Turner and Carlos Rodriguez, which is the most they have ever fielded for a Grand Tour. What to do now - wait for the Austrian or forget him and hope for the best? It's the fastest time so far so we've got to be happy - let's see what the others can do." The Spanish team - like Astana - have a slick new white jersey for the Vuelta. A bit later, Astana-Qazakstan come home just 15 seconds down - not bad from the team who, oddly enough, won the last TTT on the Vuelta back in 2019. Primoz Roglic's team-mates are putting in a pulsating ride here - they've gone through the 11km check a whopping 14 seconds to the better of Quick-Step. The Belgian team can't topple Ineos off their plinth so it's down to Movistar and Jumbo-Visma now. No sooner had Ineos Grenadiers set the best time at the intermediate check than Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl came along to move into the lead at the 11km mark. The Spanish team cross the line 30 seconds down on Ineos Grenadiers, which is ninth place for now, but will be 10th once Jumbo come home. Robert Gesink led them across the line and so it will be the rangy Dutch veteran in the red jersey tonight.

Ineos Grenadiers watched on as Jumbo-Visma edged them out in a dramatic finish to the Stage 1 team time trial as La Vuelta got off to an entertaining start.

Roglic bounced back from that incident three years ago to win the first of his three Vuelta crowns. It also draws a line under their disastrous performance in the Vuelta’s last team time trial in 2019 when four Jumbo riders – including Roglic – crashed on a freak wet patch on the road. Despite the wet roads for the earlier starters, there were no major disasters and no crashes, with the Spanish minnows Burgos-BH, who were first to start, finishing last at 1’58”. I think this is a really, really nice way of them to say thank you for all those years of helping. I’m really grateful to be in the red jersey – it’s certainly one of the highlights of my career. Gesink, 36, finished with the triple champion Primoz Roglic right in his wheel as all eight riders from Jumbo-Visma completed the 23.3km course together to deny their nearest challengers Ineos Grenadiers by 13 seconds.

Vuelta a Espana stage 2 Live - Sprinters to the fore on Dutch soil (Cyclingnews.com)

After opening TTT, the first road stage is a flat one in the Netherlands. - Sprinters Tim Merlier, Sam Bennett, Pascal Ackermann among the favourites.

We've seen a lorry with the word 'gas' and something else in Dutch on the side, and it is blocking a road, but not sure if it's blocking the race route. Alpecin have a rider on the nose but Israel-Premier Tech have a few men up there. Well now we have a two-man split off the front of the bunch. We're 35km from the only climb of the day, a cat-4 pimple. and they're going to wipe out the break They could give the breakaway 10 minutes here and still catch them but they're pegging them back to 1:45 now. That's it, after a lot of chasing then backing off, chasing then backing off, Alpecin-Deceuninck have now brought the peloton up to the head of the race. We're 10km from the first and only climb of the day. Pretty much the sole function of this climb will be to anoint a King of the Mountains. A win here would make him part of the climb of stage winners in all three Grand Tours. No fresh breakaway but we could see some last-gasp attempts to upset the sprinters on what is a fairly technical run-in.

Vuelta a España 2022: Sam Bennett wins sprint finish to take stage ... (Cycling Weekly)

A flat stage of the Vuelta a Espana in the Netherlands ended in a sprint victory for Sam Bennett.

After a three-year absence, the team time trial is back at a grand tour. While that was happening, Mark Donovan (Team DSM) needed a bike change at the back of the peloton, his demeanour suggesting he may have crashed. We give you the lowdown on the tech that powers your bike computer and smartwatch Riders were going down at the back of the peloton, running out of road space and hitting the deck. He has covered a varied range of topics for Cycling Weekly, producing articles focusing on tech, professional racing as well as cycling culture. The peloton had been strung out for that sprint before briefly bunching up, until QuickStep-Alpha Vinyl led through a technical section. That's a long way for the sprinters' teams to control the race. Unsatisfied with this new situation, Luis Ángel Maté (Euskaltel-Euskadi) thought he'd have a little solo off the front. Initially the peloton let them build up an advantage of around five minutes but then Alpecin-Deceuninck got on the front and it dropped down towards just two minutes with quite a lot of the stage left to race. Those riders' plans for a full day in the break were soon looking sketchy thanks to Alpecin's determination to bring them back. With the front of the bunch almost within touching distance and the peloton strung out the pace dropped, the riders spread out across the road and the gap went back up to around 45 seconds. However, that wasn't quite the way things went.
