The first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is the origin story we need for Tatiana Maslany's Jen Walters before we dive into "fun lawyer show."
The episode ends in explosive fashion, with Titania (Jameela Jamil) bursting through the walls of the courtroom just as Jen is starting to deliver her closing remarks, having decided to return to her life and rejecting the mantle of superhero. With more familiar faces from the MCU set to arrive in the coming weeks, including Wong (Benedict Wong), Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) and of course Daredevil (Matt Murdock), it's just a matter of time before the lawyer show becomes the superhero show. But when she first gets them, she loses control on a group of men who follow her out of a bar and force their presence on her in the kind of terrifying moment too many of us are familiar with. As the three prepare to head to court, Jen hangs back for a moment and turns to address the audience directly and explain why exactly it is that Nikki made reference to Jen "hulking out" in court. While she's secluded on an island in Mexico with Bruce, who has reassumed his Smart Hulk form, she points out that mastery of her emotions — anger in particular — is something that comes far more naturally to her than it does to him. Dennis is a little less than helpful, claiming he should be the one to make the closing argument, while Nikki is far more encouraging.
A charming Tatiana Maslany makes us fall for Marvel's latest small-screen superhero.
To drive her point home, Jen goes from human to Hulk and back again with the ease of a woman unhooking her bra at the end of a long workday. As she’s tearing the place apart, Nikki crawls over to Jen and tells her that she needs to Hulk out to save the civilians around them. To the tune of “Fast (Motion)” by Saweetie, Bruce teaches her boulder-throwing, wardrobe tips (“spandex is your best friend”), and Hulk yoga. We then return to present-day Jen, who tells us she’s been able to keep her powers under wraps since, only coming out as a Hulk to Nikki and her family. (“Those are, like, the baseline of any woman just existing,” she deadpans.) He goes in hot with a wall of buzzing saw-blades, and Jen transforms, easily stopping the saws and tearing the door off. But Bruce insists she still needs to learn to control her transformations and master her powers. “Whoever did this to you does not care about...” one says, and they surround her in a cloud of makeup, hairspray, and goodwill, gifting her a fuzzy pink jacket and a pair of iridescent sandals. What’s more, he was able to use her blood to heal his arm and is now back in fighting shape. This is his Mexican hideaway, the place where, with the help of his old pal Tony, he figured out a way to combine violent Hulk and gentle Bruce into one guy. The rapport between the cousins—and between Maslany and Ruffalo—is immediately obvious as they gossip about everything from Jen’s habit of eating Flamin’ Hot Cheetos with chopsticks (product placement!) to whether Captain America died a virgin. Four women who are clearly having the night of their lives come in and immediately offer Jen the kind of support that you only find in women’s restrooms at midnight. She wakes up after dark in human form, barefoot and covered in dirt and blood, and stumbles into the bathroom of the hilariously named Ideal Sports Bar.

Bruce spent years not being able to control the monster inside of him, destroying everything in sight, and hating who he was. He said it in the trailer. Now it’s time to see if the trailers did the show justice.

But with eight more episodes on the way, we’ll have plenty of time to get to know Jennifer – and her alter-ego – better. The frustrating result distracts from the subtleties of Tatiana Maslany’s performance – and I couldn’t help but long for her to return to Jennifer form. We only get a very brief glimpse at this side of Jennifer’s other life, including a very brief introduction to There are also other classic MCU references to enjoy: Bruce and Jennifer’s hideout was built by Tony Stark, the spaceship that sent them off course was Sakaaran, and they solve the issue of Bruce’s injured arm after the [Spider-Man](https://www.gamesradar.com/marvel-spider-man-ps4-review/), but not far off) as she prepares to take to the courtroom floor for her latest case. She’s so likable as soon as she’s on screen, effortlessly nailing the comedy, including some particularly great moments where she grapples with the foot-and-a-half difference between her Hulk height and her Jennifer height. In fact, she doesn’t seem to have much of an issue at all with her new powers, much to Bruce’s amazement. He’s got a binder – and 13 years of trauma – to help. Now, as Phase 4 comes to an end with its last episodic series, She-Hulk is planning to push the superhero genre even further as the studio's first all-out comedy – all in the guise of a half-hour legal drama. A rogue spaceship pulls out in front of their car and causes them to roll and crash. Both survive, but Bruce gets some of his blood on Jennifer’s open wound, turning her into She-Hulk. So, here is everything you need to know about She-Hulk.
She-Hulk featured a surprising spaceship from Sakaar that could tease the arrival of an important character in Hulk's past.
In the comics, World War Hulk is a storyline about Hulk returning to Earth to take his revenge against the superhero teams that exiled him on Sakaar. This role was given to Hulkling in the comics, but the MCU could incorporate an actual member of the Hulk bloodline to strengthen the young superhero group. In the comics, Skaar is not a member of the Young Avengers. With that in mind, Skaar serving as the pilot of the Sakaaran spacecraft could be a real possiiblity. This led to speculation that someone related to Hulk is piloting the ship, teasing an unexpected reveal in the series. Given that She-Hulk is set years after Ragnarok combined with the fact that time moves differently on Sakaar, it's likely that Hulk's son is an adult in the present-day MCU.
She-Hulk episode 1's spaceship that caused Jennifer and Bruce's car crash should look familiar - and it could be important for the MCU's future too.
However, if Hulk goes to Sakaar to meet Skaar or learns that his son is coming to Earth, it would be another step in the direction of a It is plausible that She-Hulk's spaceship is meant to deliver a message that Hulk has a son back on Sakaar. The potential appearance of Skaar in She-Hulk could be part of Marvel's tease for a World War Hulk movie. Smart Hulk confirms the identity of the ship and tells Jennifer that it means someone is trying to deliver him a message. It was only after Caiera died and Hulk left Sakaar to fight the Avengers that Skaar came to meet his father. While most of the attention is on what happens to her after she's exposed to Bruce Banner's blood, the series of events that leads to this life-changing moment is quite surprising.

But hey, perhaps viewers who love network-style sitcoms and procedural shows will get more of a kick out of the whole thing, and perhaps She-Hulk: Attorney at Law will markedly improve after episode four. The later procedural stuff is also kinda interminable, with a succession of There are plenty of MCU connections in the first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and most of them are weaved in via Bruce filling in some Phase 3 gaps for us. She is able to control her Hulk situation a lot more easily, she is still basically herself when in Hulk form, and she has no intention of being a superhero. Episode one is different to the rest, and sticks to Jen’s origin story before the series becomes its true procedural self. Bruce references his origin story as Edward Norton and several moments in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron while discussing how he was historically able to transition from Banner to the Hulk and back again. It’s not just that this vibe feels dated as all hell, it also speaks to how far behind the MCU is with female superhero representation that it feels the need to catch up in such a lazy and clichéd way. Not for nothing, that famous image of Oscar Isaac eating Cheetos with chopsticks also sprung to mind when Jen was praising the virtues of the technique with Bruce. The bulk of the premiere then focuses on Jen first learning to cope with her powers, and Bruce testing her limits. Some of the messaging in this show is as subtle as a boulder being thrown your way. Marvel's latest show on Disney+ introduces Bruce Banner's cousin (and comedy) to the MCU. Here's what to read after you've turned green with laughter.
(Slott teases something called the Reckoning War in his She-Hulk comics; that wouldn’t come to fruition until the very end of his Fantastic Four run, earlier this year. The idea that She-Hulk would work in an office that specializes in superhuman legal cases comes from this mid-2000s series written by Dan Slott, who’d go on to make his name with an extensive run as Marvel’s primary Spider-Man writer. If there’s a breakthrough project for She-Hulk, it’s Sensational She-Hulk, a stealth reboot of the entire character that established her as a comedy hero.
She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is here, and from the premiere episode, we have a lot of questions. Thankfully, we have some answers.
The villain we met at the end of the show’s premiere episode was Titania. No, this won’t be the last we see of Titania. It forced Jennifer to Hulk up in public, revealing to the world that she is She-Hulk.
As part of a roundtable, The Digital Fix spoke to Kat Coiro and Jessica Gao about how She-Hulk is a game-changer for female superheros.
Ultimately, while Coiro calls the She-Hulk we see on TV a “reinvention” of the comic-book version, she makes it clear that the fundamental “essence” of She-Hulk as a woman unafraid to take up space remains. “We really talked a lot about the double standards and how media covers and scrutinises women as opposed to men,” she said. “One person, one or two people cannot be expected to be representative of half the population of planet Earth,” she said. As she looks at the camera, Jennifer and the audience realise she doesn’t have to deal with this anymore — she can just Hulk out and fight the men off her. During a press roundtable where The Digital Fix were present, she tells us that “what’s great about having so many different women work on the show is that women are not a monolith.” [superhero movies](https://www.thedigitalfix.com/best-superhero-movies) and [TV series](https://www.thedigitalfix.com/best-tv-series) more feminist?
For Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), that query comes quite literally as she's gifted with the powers of a Hulk. To be a Hulk — like her cousin, Bruce Banner ...
Her new powers have made clear how unfairly she’s been treated, and now she has the ability to do something about it. Good for She-Hulk for being the first MCU superhero to use her powers for horniness. But her new success brings to light the way Jen has been continually overlooked and taught to undercut herself. One is about recognizing what you owe other people; the other is about recognizing what we owe ourselves. If given the choice to live a superhero’s life, she would ask if it offered health care (the Avengers famously do not). Perhaps I’m naive, but I’d hope that someone tuning into She-Hulk and wanting to enjoy it would know that cat-calling a woman on the street is not good behavior. In the first four episodes critics were given, there are plots in which Jen has to figure out the legal ramifications of supervillain parole or how to serve a cease and desist to unlicensed magic users. We’ll see how far Marvel wants to go in examining the sexist world She-Hulk pushes back against. That’s all not to mention the duty, and burden, of using his abilities to protect and save the defenseless. If someone threw out the idea of the endless, At the start, Jen is content in her circumscribed life. She’s proud of her work in the DA’s office.
It has been quite some time since Ms. Marvel ended on Disney Plus. Since then, Thor: Love and Thunder has been shown in theaters, and Black Panther: Wakanda ...
This leads Bruce to allow Jennifer to leave and go back to her normal life. What follows is a story that shows how she controls her Hulk-form and a lot of exposition from Bruce which explains their relationship as cousins and Gamma-infused individuals. This leads to a tense argument and a fight breaking out between the two. Bruce’s experiment causes Jennifer to go angry and transform into a Hulk. Bruce then tells her that she needs to stay in the beach house so she can control her transformation, starting with a test that will trigger her stress. This incident causes her to transform into a Hulk and she blacks out again.
Disney+'s "She-Hulk" with its first mid-credits scene of the season cracked the mystery of Captain America's sex life.
And I’m also just so happy and proud that we managed to let Jen make the big proclamation that she makes.” “The season was going to close out with that tag. “I’m so happy and proud that we got to answer that question. Except, Jen breaks the fourth wall to tell us that she is indeed a Hulk and decides to tell us how she obtained the power so we can enjoy this “fun lawyer show.” We cut to the next morning where Smart Hulk tries to teach her meditation. “Easy, girl, easy,” Smart Hulk says. “We just have to control when you turn,” Smart Hulk says. Speaking of which, Smart Hulk tells Jen that she received a lethal dose of gamma radiation. This time in a nice beach house where she finds “Smart Hulk” (“I don’t pick the names,” Bruce says) doing some work. After some back and forth, Nikki tells Jen that if she loses the case she can just “Hulk out.” It’s a nonchalant remark.
The latest Marvel Studios Disney+ show stars Tatiana Maslany and Mark Ruffalo.
Overall, the first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is a lot. The show suggests the reason why Jen, and not Bruce, can so easily and quickly control her powers is that Jen is a woman. To Jen, she’s just a lawyer, which brings us full circle back to the episode’s beginning and Jen’s assurance that this is not a superhero show. We see an example of this earlier in the show when a bunch of men follow and harass Jen outside the dive bar. A statement one might believe for a few seconds until the evil Titania (Jameela Jamil) interrupts one of Jen’s cases out of nowhere, and Jen Hulks out in front of the courtroom to beat her up. (We’ve seen the first four episodes as of publication, and each has one of these.) Jen is still talking about Captain America’s sex life when Bruce, finally submits. Bruce explains to her what happened and that her life as she knows it is over. And while the rest of the She-Hulk pilot does explain Jen’s origin, it also serves as a very densely packed catch-all for Bruce Banner’s whereabouts and condition in and around Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Which is not what a woman who has spent her entire life building a career in law wants to hear. [go a little nutty outside a dive bar](https://gizmodo.com/she-hulk-bathroom-scene-marvel-studios-disney-plus-mcu-1849405810), Bruce reigns her in, and the story shifts down to the aforementioned Mexican hideout. Episode one of [She-Hulk: Attorney at Law](https://gizmodo.com/she-hulk-first-reactions-critics-twitter-marvel-disney-1849416855) is finally on Disney+; it introduces Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), a Los Angeles lawyer on the rise who, at the start of the show, [can already turn into a massively powerful green Hulk](https://gizmodo.com/she-hulk-marvel-studios-disney-plus-interview-1849402425). The show answers a few questions that fans have had about the jade giant post-'Avengers: Endgame'. she-hulk-trailer-bruce-banner ...
The device breaks during the car crash, meaning that Banner reverts to his "Smart Hulk" form, although he uses Jennifer's blood to heal his broken arm — an injury sustained when he snapped his fingers while wearing the Infinity Gauntlet. In the She-Hulk pilot, he explains that the device helps him revert to human form while also healing the damage that he received to his arm when he wielded the Infinity Stones in Endgame. And given Banner's presence in She-Hulk, as well as the return of the Abomination (Tim Roth), it looks like the jade giant will continue to have a major influence on the MCU's future. This winds up being a moot point as Jennifer has more of a handle on her Hulk strength, even being able to change back and forth between forms at will. The first episode shows that transformation, with a car crash leading to Bruce's gamma-irradiated blood seeping into Jennifer's wounds and transforming her into the She-Hulk — but the rest of the episode also reveals more about how Bruce was able to merge his two separate personalities into one whole Hulk. The She-Hulk pilot expands further on this: during the five-year gap between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, Banner constructed a lab in Mexico with the help of Tony Stark.
Marvel's "She-Hulk" this Thursday made the case for headlining her own Disney+ series. What say you, the jury?
Once this very random (and to-be-explained-later) threat is neutralized, Jen returns to her normal self, clothes a bit tattered, and plainly tells the judge, “I’m ready to give my closing argument now.”](https://tvline.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/she-hulk-maslany-video.jpg) Nikki quietly urges Jen to do her “thing,” publicly for the first time, and — favorite outfit be damned — Jen kicks off her heels and swells into her She-Hulk form, to clobber Titania. Tensions cool as Jen helps Bruce rebuild the bar, during which he concedes that she can return to her normal life. Powers like this can put a target on your back, he warns, but Jen is more focuses on her ability to metabolize booze — “All buzz, no barf,” Bruce boasts. The question then becomes, “How can Jen turn herself back?,” as Bruce warns that he was once “stuck” as Hulk for two years, in outer space. And as she drags out a dazed Bruce, blood from his own wound drips into hers, nearly instantly causing her to “hulk out,” as seen in a car door reflection.
She-Hulk gets to the bottom of the Captain America virginity rumor, which has epitomized the lack of onscreen romance for Marvel superheroes.

She-Hulk attracted controversy ahead of release for its digital effects in trailers, but past that, happens to be an MCU show directed by, written by, ...
She-Hulk has a 90% critic score with 255 reviews in and 77% audience score, which isn’t great (it’s the lowest among MCU shows at the moment), but it’s not as intensive of a bombing run as what’s being shown on IMDB. So yes, as ever, this kind of review bombing is incredibly childish and stupid. I also thought the comedy and fourth wall-breaking worked, but I’m certainly curious to see more and how the show develops now that Jennifer is back in lawyer mode. And as I posted last time, here’s what this curve looks like for a “just okay” series like Falcon and the Winter Soldier that no one is bombing: Yes, more than a third of all reviews for She-Hulk are 1 star, which makes its current IMDB score 5.4 out of 10, the lowest of all the MCU series. Marvel is still at a 6.2 with 19.9% 1 star reviews, so it’s not like IMDB every really goes and tries to sort through these kinds of bombing campaigns. All I have to do is consult the last article I wrote about this, which shows what review bombing actually looks like, where it’s taking place on Marvel, and what has not happened to the same extent with other MCU series. In fact, this is actually worse than what happened with Ms. - Hawkeye – 1.5% - She-Hulk – 35.8% - Loki – 1.5%

Chris Evans shared his funny reaction to a major reveal about his Captain America character in the She-Hulk Disney+ series.
It's also appropriate that Bruce Banner was the one who confirmed Steve Rogers' virginity status. Some are heavily speculating that the woman was She-Hulk: Attorney at Law's latest reveal blew everyone away, and it's only fitting that Chris Evans joined the hype. While Walters appears convinced that Rogers is not a virgin anymore, Banner played coy about the matter. This answer to this question has long been speculated by Marvel fans, and recently, [Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was the one who actually unveiled](https://thedirect.com/article/kevin-feige-captain-america-virginity-mcu) the answer to the writers.
In the new MCU show, Bruce Banner's cousin Jennifer Walters becomes a Hulk, but rather than be a superhero, she wants to keep being a lawyer.
The IRL actor and fictional Jen share a love of eating • Jen’s origin story is a bit different here than it is in the comics. This makes sense to me, and not in a #girlboss or “girls mature faster” or “backward and in heels” kind of way. In the post-credits scene, Jen fakes being drunk so she can get Bruce plastered and finally learn the dirty deets about Captain Rogers — who Bruce confirms hooked up with a girl on the USO tour back in the 1940s. Back in the present in Los Angeles, Jen is ready to nail her closing argument in the case against GLK&H. The third time she transforms, she retains her mind and memory and doesn’t need to be talked to like a wild animal. Eager to train the new green meanie in the family, Bruce assembles a binder of notes to help teach his cuz the ropes and determine what triggers her transformations. She is not super-adept at fighting, but there’s not a lot of finesse to smashing anyway. That prompts our hero to perceive us, turning to the camera and explaining that, as of a few months ago, she is a Hulk, NBD. Pac-Man situation.) One day after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Jen and Bruce are riding in a car together. This causes her to Hulk out and black out a second time. If you need a refresher on a decade of MCU history to make sense of the premiere, I’ve got you covered.
She-Hulk's head writer Jessica Gao explains that the end credits scene came from Kevin Feige.
As hinted at in the interview, Cap’s first time won’t be the last time fan-favorite topics are going to be discussed on She-Hulk. Also, that he was okay—obviously—with the amazing, meme-worthy “Captain America fucks!” scream that ends the scene. It was Kevin Feige who not only didn’t discourage Gao from exploring the sex life of Captain America—he also supplied the very specific bit of information that Cap lost his virginity in 1943 on the USO Tour. Bruce and Jen are drinking and, well, Bruce tells Jen the truth about big Cap and his little Cap. In fact, all four of the episodes we’ve seen have them.) We flash back to the cousins in Mexico. Things the fans talk about.

"She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" star Tatiana Maslany discusses the challenges of Marvel's first TV comedy and inspiration from "Seinfeld."
And something about that, actually — and I’m sure other actors have said this — taps into this thing that you do in a theater rehearsal, where you’re imagining that might be where the bed is, or you’re imagining the fourth wall or whatever. But then as soon as I am She-Hulk and I’m in this costume, that does kind of separate me from people — puts me on platforms so I take up a different space. She’s aware of all the mechanics of it, and engages with that. And there’s something about her awareness that maintains from her Jen form to She-Hulk, where she has this hyper awareness — it is part of her superpower — that also is now part of her connection to the audience. Did you look at that show as a tonal inspiration for what you’re doing? I feel like that set me up very well to step into something so technical and do it with an awareness that it can be actually very liberating. Jennifer obviously notices a difference in how people treat her as She-Hulk in the show. Or, alternatively, you’ve got this stick on your helmet that has like a frozen She-Hulk smiling face, and they’re talking to that. From 2013 to 2017, she embodied over a dozen clones on the sci-fi series “Orphan Black,” and won an Emmy for it in the process. Sometimes you’re walking on a platform, if you’re working with an actor who’s not also a Hulk, so that their eyeline is actually looking up at where your face would be. She talked with Variety about the technical challenges of the show, the scene she could barely get through, and why her biggest inspirations were “Legally Blonde” and “Seinfeld.” It was so funny on every page, and it was super weird.
She-Hulk Attorney at Law star Tatiana Maslany relishes breaking Marvel Studios' fourth wall before Deadpool makes his way into the.
And it’s not necessarily something that she comes to in the snap moment that it takes for her to become a Hulk. It was total play and total imagination time, in a way, and when do adults get to do that? It’s as meta as you can possibly get, and what’s more meta than discussing the fact that the Hulk in [The Incredible Hulk, 2008] was played by a totally different actor? That’s the reason I took this part. So I got to bring that to this character, She-Hulk, and explore her in a more internal way. As much as her transformation is outwardly visible, her internal stays the same, and so that’s a bit of a difference. In general, when you first left Orphan and you went on to play just one character, was it jarring at first? He’s just so great, and the only thing he ever did was make me feel like whatever I was doing was correct. Do Jen Walters and She-Hulk feel like a walk in the park compared to that previous experience? But at the same time, Orphan Black allowed me such a playground to stretch these muscles of differentiating character and make me feel that there was so much possibility in what any one person can be. I just wanted to beat [Deadpool],” Maslany jokes to The Hollywood Reporter. It’s quite fitting since She-Hulk got the fourth-wall jump on the Merc with a Mouth in the comics, too.
When She-Hulk brings in Jameela Jamil's Titania at the end of episode 1, it seems like she might be a one-off villain. But Titania has a long Marvel ...
In one memorable and oddly moving instance from Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz’s Mighty Thor, Creel even sits down at a diner with Thor himself to convince him to scare Titania straight, to stop her from giving up the law-abiding life and returning to prison. By the time of 1989’s Solo Avengers #14, a chastened Titania was forced to solemnly promise She-Hulk (on pain of thrashing) to go back to jail and leave her alone — a vow which, alas, MacPherran couldn’t quite keep. Titania was never quite able to shake off her childhood sense of mediocrity, and she needs to impress She-Hulk by proving she’s up to her standards. And the only way to do that is by proving that she’s strong enough to pound her into cement. The 'She-Hulk: Attorney at Law' team — including Jessica Gao, Kat Coiro, Tatiana Maslany and Mark Ruffalo — break down the series' key relationships.
“As actors, they were bonding about all of these technical aspects that they have to deal with” in the motion capture suit, says Coiro. “He thinks somehow he’s going to mansplain what it is to be the Hulk to her, and she ends up teaching him just as much as he’s trying to teach her, if not more,” says Ruffalo. Because Jen’s origin story involves Banner, “She-Hulk” allows the genius scientist to show new sides of his life through his interactions with his cousin. And from the first episode, “She-Hulk” does not shy away from addressing how women like Jen live with constant pressure to control their rage and fear in a way that men like Banner do not have to. “In so many things, even when they have loving friends, someone’s stabbing someone in the back at some point, and it’s so unnecessary,” says Gonzaga. “There’s a real fun antagonism there.” And yet, when you present so differently, when you are suddenly green and gigantic and every eye in the room turns to you when you walk in through a door, you do modulate your personality.” And Gonzaga sidesteps the answer like a true MCU pro when questioned about whether Nikki has any secrets or powers of her own. Below are some of Jen’s key relationships introduced in “She-Hulk” so far. 'She-Hulk: Attorney at Law' finally answers the question of whether Captain America died a virgin — and Mark Ruffalo didn't warn Chris Evans about it.
"And I was like, 'You have the answer, and we can tell everyone?' And he was like, 'Yeah.' So this is Marvel canon. She loved how Jen is obsessed with Captain America's virginity because "it's the human side of him, the real side, the thing that she would [relate to]." "We didn't set out thinking that we were going to be able to answer it," Gao tells EW. In that vein of that question, there's a lot more Easter eggs like that throughout the season. But the actress admits she had no idea this was something Marvel fans have been wondering for years, adding, "I love that that's how everybody's thinking. "That's all the human stuff that we don't get to [usually see]," he says. But it turns out no one warned Captain America himself that a very personal piece of his history was about to be broadcast to the world. "What's great about this show is that we get to see them as just human beings and what their lives are and what those histories are. The cat's out of the bag." as the scene abruptly cuts, and now that piece of very vital information is cemented in the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. First and foremost though, this is a She-Hulk show, and we need to see her be able to handle threats on her own. Fortunately, she was able to easily defeat Jameela Jamil’s Titania at the end of this episode, so this shouldn’t be an issue. Given that Bruce's arms device was blinking after the car crash, it appears that it was either partially or completely damaged, thus explaining why he reverted to Hulk form. The origin story portion of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s premiere episode, “A Normal Amount of Rage,” began with showing Bruce Banner on a road trip with his cousin, Jennifer Walters, played by Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany. During the five-year gap between Thanos’ snap and the Mad Titan’s genocide being undone, Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce found a way to combine his intelligence and personality with Hulk’s physique, and Smart Hulk was born! Bruce was going over this simply because Jennifer had asked what he’d been up to, but hey, we Marvel Cinematic Universe fans appreciate the explanation!

Sure, it felt a bit fast and that lends to the ‘Mary Sue’ analysis, but I think it was more about expediency than anything. But I remain irritated that modern TV writers seem to think that creating a “strong female character” requires her to be constantly contrasted favorably against the men around her, instead of just existing as an interesting character in her own right. I’m not sold on the show yet but I’m not turned off, either. Some of the stuff that happens to the female characters in this show likely has happened to real women in the real world. I incorporated this into a story I was working on and my creative writing instructor told me it was too unbelievable to work in the context of my story. It just comes atop a pile of unnecessary baggage the show would be better off without. The CGI is fine and as the story progresses we get some interesting new conflicts and cameos. Instead of making us question inequality in the workplace or the dangers of misogyny, we’re given such outrageous examples that in the end we just feel detached from them. And while it may seem, at first blush, like Walters is a bit of a ‘Mary Sue’ in the series premiere—where she can do everything the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) had to spend over a decade learning in a day—we quickly learn that her troubles are far from over, and that her super-powers will lead to some setbacks as well. She may have put up with more annoying men but he’s a superhero almost definitionally angry all the time, whose rage is both his power and his curse. But it’s like that woman in the park telling her toddler she doesn’t love him. When I was younger, we were at zoo and I overheard a frustrated mother say to her young, misbehaving child, “I don’t love you anymore!” It was shocking and terrible, though almost certainly just a reaction from an exhausted and frazzled parent who (one hopes) regretted ever saying it (even if she meant it in that moment).

The argument between Jen and Bruce is basically a buildup to the obligatory fight scene. Anyway, Bruce confirms that Steve Rogers lost his virginity in 1943 to a girl on the USO tour. She's only pretending to be drunk, because the major benefit of Hulkdom is that pounding brews is all buzz and no barf. And so we're back to the trial. However, Doctor Doom plays noteworthy roles in both versions, which is why it’s so easy to believe that his MCU debut may be just around the corner. Right now, it’s unclear exactly how similar She-Hulk’s version of Titania is to the character’s original comic book incarnation. Even if Doom does make his debut this year, that doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll have any connection to Jameela Jamil’s Titania. How Jennifer Walters can go from feeble to Hulk in the blink of an eye—which barely helps her when she's faced with the law? In her comics catalog, Jennifer Walters never wanted to be a superhero, but she still wanted to spend her career helping people. He tries to follow a routine of the struggle and trauma by telling her to calm down because the shame he wields is terrified she will be uncontrollable. In contrast, Jen wants her old life back and even confesses, “I’ll never become like you” it felt a tad bit of foreshadowing that could lead to the mindset of Jen feeling at ease and content being She-Hulk due to the strength and spotlight it bears. And the balance of living as something you are not and hiding in fragments of shame felt like the episode’s antagonist. The screenplay illustrates the challenges of living as a woman in this day and age, most noticeable in the bar scene later on. However, the camera pans to show her office, which is clean and uncluttered, and her law degree is on the wall in the back, proudly displaying her qualifications. Perhaps She-Hulk‘s greatest strength is its ability to peel back to the humble illusion of being a hero and struggling to fit in.

And the confluence of these two modes has made Jennifer Walters into an extremely rare sight in pop culture: a highly feminine character who still gets to be incredibly smart, incredibly strong, incredibly confident, and incredibly funny. Slott’s series wasn’t exactly about the different ways women move through the world based on physical appearance or fame, but it was about Jen learning to feel proud of herself even when she wasn’t 7 feet tall and bench pressing a truck. And it’s the mixture of these two modes that the creators of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law chose for their series. Her first case was to prove that a corporation owed damages to an employee who was given superpowers in a laboratory accident. The first episode of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law contains several easter eggs and references that longtime Marvel fans are sure to notice.
In the comics, Jennnifer Walters is shot by a mobster and critically injured, forcing Bruce Banner to provide her with a blood transfusion to save her life and infect her blood with that of the Hulks. [ordinary life as a lawyer](https://gamerant.com/she-hulk-daredevil-mcu-attorneys/), she believes that her time as a Hulk is long behind her, and what was a wild week, will remain just that. They have fought on multiple occasions, and the MCU is just the beginning of their rivalry. [open wound caused by a car crash](https://gamerant.com/new-she-hulk-clip-good-bad-parts-being-hulk-marvel/) leaves Jennifer Walters exposed to a bleeding Bruce Banner, whose droplets of blood get into her wound and infect her bloodstream. On his bar, the initials “B.B.” and “T.S.” are carved into the wooden surface. The ship is of Sakaaran design, and the people on Sakaar celebrated Hulk like a god for being a fierce gladiator. Bruce Banner takes Jennifer Walters to his Mexico hideout to help her control her new powers and responsibility as a Hulk. This is known as a fourth wall break, and although it breaks the immersion of a solidified cinematic universe existing in its plain, it is completely in character for Jennifer Walters and She-Hulk to do. In She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Bruce’s hideaway in Mexico has one of the destroyed Iron Legion masks as décor. This is depicted in the show a few times already, much like how Deadpool would, but less vulgar and crass. It’s a fun meta-reference and shows how She-Hulk isn’t shy to poke fun at itself. The series is one episode in, and already is ripe with easter eggs that only die-hard Marvel fans would notice.

That the show is able to address the undercurrent of anger that comes with feminism is a step toward acknowledging rage as merely a valid response to a world that is broadly inhumane, in ways big and small, to women every day. It’s a double-edged sword that the creators behind She-Hulk know too well. “Those are like the baseline of any woman just existing.” It’s a point she’ll hit harder later in the episode, after weeks of training to be dexterous and zen so as to not accidentally Hulk out. [She-Hulk: Attorney at Law](https://www.polygon.com/23291038/she-hulk-creators-disney-vfx-union) makes its thesis statement about 13 minutes into its first episode: When Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) tells his cousin — newly Hulked, thanks to an accident — Jen Walters (Tatiana Maslany) that the triggers are anger and fear, she scoffs.

For the first time since the Avengers films, Bruce refers to Hulk as "the Other Guy" to explain how crucial it is that Jen gets control over her hulk side. After a long day of training, Bruce and Jen go to Bruce’s Bar and bond over a couple, several, drinks in Hulk form. The situations he gives to Jen range from The Avengers, Age of Ultron, and Thor: Ragnarok, which all feature iconic moments of Hulk to Bruce transformations. While we have all enjoyed these moments as audience members, it’s fun to be reminded of the events through Bruce as he shares them from his perspective. Raising and lowering his hands, Bruce speaks in a low voice to get Jen to emerge. Feeling confident about her ability to maintain consciousness as She-Hulk, Bruce reminds Jen that she still can’t control how and when she transforms. Though he tried to play it cool, Bruce definitely welled up at the mention of Bing-Bong, and who can blame him? Sakaar is the planet that Hulk landed on after the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and it is where the majority of Thor: Ragnarok is set. Jen suggests putting on a Pixar movie, citing the tear-jerking moment from Inside Out when Bing-Bong jumps out of the wagon to save Joy from being lost forever. While we learn later that Jen’s experience is much different from Bruce’s and that she has already refined her anger to use at will, at this moment, Bruce hopes to determine a threshold to give Jen an upper hand. It’s also a callback to Avengers: Age of Ultron when Tony posed the question to Bruce, “What if you were sipping margaritas on a sun-drenched beach, turning brown instead of green, and not looking over your shoulder?” Considering the majority of all Phase Four projects have taken place post-blip, there are five years of time that have been unexplored for the surviving Avengers and She-Hulk’s first episode does a great job at giving us a glimpse of how Bruce spent that time. She-Hulk introduces Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), cousin of Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and attorney at law who has the unique ability to break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience.

And from the first episode, “She-Hulk” does not shy away from addressing how women like Jen live with constant pressure to control their rage and fear in a way that men like Banner do not have to. “What I love about our show is that we’re taking the time to really just turn the camera a little bit to the left and see what’s going on in [their] everyday life.” “In so many things, even when they have loving friends, someone’s stabbing someone in the back at some point, and it’s so unnecessary,” says Gonzaga. One of the things about the Disney+ series that struck Mark Ruffalo, quoting head writer Jessica Gao, is “how horny-forward [the story] is” compared to the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he shares with a laugh.
