Rangers head to Holland next week for a £40million shoot-out with PSV Eindhoven and their Champions League future at stake.
The seedings have already been laid out for the top two pots for the group stages, and the draw takes place next Thursday (August 25). Rangers have both A and B squads to choose from but the likes of Kemar Roofe, Filip Helander and Ianis Hagi were left out through their long-term injuries. An estimated income between £30m and £40m can be generated from qualification for the group stages with a basic £12m just for kicking off each of the six games.
Four goals were shared at Ibrox in the first leg of the qualifying play-off.
Rangers finished the first half on top with Benitez having to save a Tavernier header and early in the second half the PSV keeper made a better stop from Colak’s angled drive. However, the keeper had a nightmare when trying to deal with Lawrence’s long-distance free-kick, the ball skidding off the greasy surface and slipping out of his hands and over the line to the disbelief and joy of the home fans. The Dutch side took the lead when the Rangers defence failed to deal with a Gakpo corner from the left and defender Sangare swept the loose ball into the net from 10 yards. Three minutes later, Davis slid Tavernier in behind the PSV defence and he cut the ball back for Colak to steer his low drive last Benitez. An absorbing tie continued after the break and a bad mistake in the 69th minute from PSV goalkeeper Walter Benitez allowed Tom Lawrence’s free-kick to cross the line. Gers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst was in the opposition dugout to former Netherlands team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy and it was the visitors who took the lead in the 37th minute when Ibrahim Sangare drove in following a corner.
But former top referees say Light Blues were denied a clear penalty in 2-2 draw with Dutch side.
“The ball came off his arm, he was making himself big – it was a stupid thing to do in my opinion - and it was a clear penalty. VAR was there and I have absolutely no doubt they looked at it because it is incumbent upon them so they either agreed with the ref or decided it wasn’t a clear and obvious error and let it go with the referee’s call. We’re saying that Rangers should have had a penalty, but maybe the escape of Colak has evened things out.” Conroy said: “There was no great dissent to it, but it was a penalty. “The two players had been at it all night – pushing and pulling. Sign up to our daily sport newsletter You talk about serious foul play and endangering an opponent, but you also talk about violent conduct. Teze’s arm was in a completely un-natural position, there is no doubt about that and there was no reason for him to be jumping in that manner for a ball like that coming into the area. Colak had a great night and that’s four goals in his last four games. If you throw your arm out and hit someone on the back of the head, is that making a play for the ball? Celtic captain Callum McGregor admits he would love a crack at defending champions Real Madrid in this season's Champions League.
It’s been a nice little look back to the past. It forces you to look back a little bit and remember some of the things you’ve done in terms of your journey. “We’ve played quite a few big teams but probably the one most of the Celtic fans would like is Real Madrid.
RANGERS are 90 minutes from discovering their European fate this season with a spot in either the Champions League or Europa League group stage…
In the Champions League a win is worth €2.8m (£2.36m) and a draw seeing clubs paid €930k (£783k). Taking this into account, Rangers could then expect around £2.4m in TV money if they were in the Europa League group stage instead. Rangers would then receive payment instead from the Europa League market pool - with current calculations based on Hearts not qualifying. Should Rangers advance in the Champions League then a payment between £960,000 and £3.8m would be received. Matchday income is the fourth way of making money through European nights with the atmosphere at Ibrox well renowned. Another major factor in European revenue is TV money paid to clubs competing. For Rangers, while it would come as a disappointment to miss out on achieving the group stage in the Champions League, they would receive a €5m payment if they lose in the play-offs and drop into the Europa League group stage. Taking all of this into account, we've calculated the income for Rangers in the Champions League and Europa League based on participation fee, coefficient share, TV money and matchday income. Should Hearts make the group stage then the money would be divided in the same fashion as Champions League TV cash with Rangers receiving a higher share. Should Rangers drop into the Europa League then the Champions League money TV money would be paid to Celtic only. Of that money, 50 per cent would be divided between Rangers and Celtic – 55 per cent for the champions and 45 per cent for the runners-up. But how will playing in the Champions League instead of the Europa League, or vice-versa, impact the money Rangers will receive?
The first-leg last night ended in a 2-2 draw after some entertaining football.
