Anfield erupted with a misplaced sense of grievance and their team fed off the backing. The final act of the first half saw Elliott release Núñez inside the area with a delightful chip. Klopp’s irritation looked trivial in comparison, the Liverpool manager turning towards the crowd and putting his finger to his lips after they had encouraged a hugely ambitious Van Dijk shot from 30 yards. The connection between Alexander-Arnold and Salah ensured an exhausting night for Tyrick Mitchell at left wing-back while Núñez also displayed an immediate and encouraging rapport with the Egypt international. Núñez also missed a decent opportunity after Van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold stretched Palace with long, pinpoint passes. But Patrick Vieira’s determined team defended with clear heads and impressive spirit to claim a rare point at Anfield.

It's not the start we would want but you see the fight there. Obviously when you've got players like him on the pitch that can create something out of nothing, it was an incredible goal and hopefully there'll be many more to come this season from him. It's not the ideal start but you see the readiness for the season and it's obviously a long, long season. But it's not the ideal start to the season but we need to keep playing the way we started and finished the game. I think the reaction was the most important thing. The team reacted very, very well and the ground reacted very well – as they always do – they got right behind us and we could've nicked a winner. They've obviously got quality and are always going to cause you problems on the break, which we could've defended better. I didn't see the incident. That's football, that's the Premier League, it's always going to be tough. I think the reaction going down to 10 men was very, very good. They're well organised but they've got a lot of very good individuals as well who are unpredictable and caught us on the break. You're coming up against organised teams, teams with quality, teams that will try to hurt you on the break as well.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez red carded for Zinedine Zidane-like ... (CBSSports.com)

The Uruguay international lost his temper and was later bailed out by a fantastic Luis Diaz equalizer in the second half.

Only one found the back of the net and it took a moment of brilliance for that to come to fruition. For a Liverpool side that has lacked intensity to start matches, they have to find a way to push through despite the concerning number of injuries bubbling up. The Reds threw everything forward and Richards kept things tidy and even made an interception to block a shot and won all four of his aerial duels. Liverpool were able to respond by finding an equalizer via a wonderful solo strike by Diaz in the 61st minute, but it wasn't enough to rescue a victory in the match. Despite trailing at the time of the red, Liverpool were dominating the match and it felt like a second-half turnaround was in the cards. Patrick Vieira set up his Crystal Palace team in a back three to deal with Liverpool crosses into Nunez and his plan couldn't have worked better.

Player Ratings: Liverpool 1-1 Crystal Palace | Luis Diaz & Harvey ... (Sports Illustrated)

Liverpool were held yet again in the Premier League as Jurgen Klopp's men were forced to settle for a point against Crystal Palace.

I think Jurgen Klopp will be pleased with how his team responded from last week's performance against Fulham - but still disappointed not to get three points from tonight. He didn't put a foot out of line and did very well given the circumstances that he came on with - Liverpool were down to ten men already at this point. The Portuguese youngster was lively when he came on for Harvey Elliott and despite only playing ten minutes or so, was constantly asking for the ball and running in behind the Crystal Palace defence. Kostas Tsimikas looked very lively when he was introduced in place of Andrew Robertson in the 63rd minute. Dancing around the Crystal Palace defence as he cuts inside, and a killer of a shot brings the ten-man Liverpool level. I noted before how Mohamed Salah may have struggled in those tight and compact spaces - but that's where Luis Diaz thrives. Oh dear, Darwin. It was a very reckless and emotive decision from Darwin Nunez which saw him receive a blatant red card for a headbutt on Joachim Andersen. However, before that, he looked dangerous - with good chances to score either side of half-time. Reminiscent of the start of last season before his injury - that's how good he was. Although nothing miraculous, he provided the assist for Luis Diaz's goal and overall was very assured during the game. He didn't do anything wrong for the Crystal Palace goal - and looked like a solid central defender. Like the rest of the squad, Fabinho was much more himself tonight. He was often eager to come out and made a notable save against Wilfried Zaha in the first half.

We won’t watch it, of course, but might seek out the goals on Twitter if it sounds fun. (Look, it's early and rhymes of religion are hard to come by, so go easy please.) Anyway, head over toThe Athletic (£)for the full story on Cristiano Ronaldo's meals for one. Yet since returning from United’s tour, which saw good performances and a strong unity develop among the travelling group, Ronaldo’s reintegration into the squad has proven challenging. But from the outside looking in, can you blame the Glazers for not wanting to spend much more? "I know that there’s a big call for blaming the players and we’ve blamed the players a lot. It might be because of their performance, value, price tag or just their behaviour. Bruno Fernandes has gone off the boil a bit but, because of the numbers he’s hit over two seasons, you have to say he worked – and Ibrahimovic has worked. We removed some of the younger players, but £1.25 billion has been spent. On last night's MNF, he dismantled Manchester United's recruitment in the post-Sir Alex era. Then again, if Monday night is anything to go by, maybe Nunez’s looming suspension is precisely what Liverpool need to kick-start their season. And we can’t deny that it was the perfect trap from Andersen – finishing with a cinematic fall his almost-namesake Wes would be proud of. When enjoying fine games, such as tonight’s we should not forget the level to which our sport has stooped in its pursuit of riches over integrity. Guaita cleared nicely for Eze who slipped a lovely pass in behind for Zaha, who'd put himself in race with Phillips. He's away before the defender even turns, left of centre, then he composes, opens body, and sidefoots a lovely finish across Alisson into the far side-netting! This does not speak well of the league. When enjoying fine games, such as tonight’s we should not forget the level to which our sport has stooped in its pursuit of riches over integrity. This does not speak well of the league. Not because two dodgy results early season mean they’re no longer good, but because the number of points required to win the title is so high, that dropping them – against Fulham and Palace too, teams unlikely to finish in the top eight – means they've handed Man City a four-point advantage.

Liverpool need to go and get a midfielder that can offer this. Thiago is the only real creative spark in midfield but is injury prone. This is just the start. Last night, Elliot repaid that trust and outperformed everyone on the pitch. The standard is much higher, you will be punished for missed opportunities, and there is no room for petulance. Although the winger has every attribute you'd want in that position, one thing was lacking from his performances last season.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace: Reds battle back for another draw (video) (NBC Sports)

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace recap: The Reds suffered another setback to start the Premier League season, as they battled back to draw 1-1 at Anfield.

It should be said that for as much as Liverpool were in control of the ball, Crystal Palace were quite comfortable in control of where the Reds were allowed to possess it. Liverpool will be leaning on Virgil van Dijk at the back as the Reds deal with some early injuries to defense and midfield. Not that it’s really that simple or straightforward, of course, unless Patrick Vieira is your manager, at which point it is now expected of Crystal Palace. The Eagles hardly had a sniff of the ball, let alone the opposition penalty area, in the opening half hour, and yet they were as sharp and quick as could be when Eberechi Eze had his one opportunity to send Zaha in on goal. At the time of Zaha’s opener, Liverpool had attempted 133 passes inside the opposition half; Crystal Palace had tried just 17. Man City led Liverpool by double-digit points almost midway through last season before taking the title race down to the final minute of the season, but it would be unwise to count on the two-time defending champions to slip up in such fashion again. They fell behind the newly promoted Cottagers twice last week, and again on Monday they found themselves behind after conceding the game’s first goal for a sixth straight Premier League fixture (dating back to last season). Injuries are mounting up now as well, with Nuñez likely to be suspended for three games, at the same time Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Roberto Firmino and Curtis Jones, among other fringe players, currently unavailable.

Red Card Shows Darwin Nuñez Must Learn to Deal with Liverpool ... (The Liverpool Offside)

Manager Jürgen Klopp called the striker's red card for a headbutt "not cool" and he will now miss three games because of it.

The situation is similar in midfield and defence, where multiple starters are out injured. Liverpool will continue to be without Diogo Jota in the coming weeks due to injury, while Roberto Firmino missed out against Palace as a precautionary measure. Liverpool ended pre-season seemingly ready to storm the Premier League and improve on last season’s near-miss of a historic quadruple.
